The new role is for someone named Meredith. That was the name of Rafe's
crazy sister-in-law from his first wife who kidnapped him, so I presume it's
the same character.

This could be good! Isn't Meredith the one who came to Salem at Stefano's behest, to break up Rafe and Sami, who were dating at the time? And Meredith was out for revenge for her sister's death, for which she (wrongfully) blamed Rafe so she kidnapped him and tried to brick him into a wall in a basement.
And if I'm not mistaken, this is the Meredith who eventually dumped Rafe in the river, and Rafe was rescued by Carly Manning.....leading to all the Bo/Hope/nighttime Hope/Carly business.

Meredith should team up with Vivian. You'd really see fireworks!!

Not necessarily. They often put out casting calls with a name different
than the actual character they're casting for. They would disguise when
an actor is being replaced, especially one who's been on the show
before. Or even a new character which could be a spoiler. Maybe it's
someone for Rafe, but maybe it's to pair up Lucas. With Sami, EJ and
their kids leaving, I think I heard that will leave more screentime for
Lucas and Ally and they may give him a romance. He just showed up
yesterday after being offscreen for several weeks.

Yes, she did that, but I don't see it being the same character...

I hope Lucas gets a storyline. He's been in limbo for so long! Other than
a very brief fling with Sheryl, he's had nothing to do. That's what
happens to characters with no conflict in their lives. Nice in real life,
not so much in soap opera land.

That was the first episode of DOOL I ever saw!

You're probably right. It's been a while.

The only thing is - as I posted once or twice before, it's really pretty
rare for Days to introduce a character with the same first name as a
previous unrelated character. There are obviously cases of characters named
for other people on the show (Ally, Johnny, Sami, Ari, etc.) - but it's
pretty rare for two characters with no connection to have the same first
name. It's happened a few times in the history of the show, but the number
of examples can probably be counted on one hand, and it's usually very minor
characters who didn't have any kind of major role. I can really only think
of one significant example of two very important unrelated characters with
the same first name - and that would be Susan Martin from the 1970s and
Susan Blake from the 1990s.

In this case, Rafe's Meredith was on within the last 5-7 years, so it's hard
for me to understand why they'd bring in a totally unrelated character with
the same first name. They just normally don't do that.

You have a point. As sloppy as the writing can sometimes be, they are
usually pretty careful with names.
Also, the site you gave the link for mentions the character is stunning,
fragile, and has a troubled soul. That would certainly fit Rafe's
ex-fiancee's sister.

As I mentioned in another post, they often put a character name on a
casting call that isn't the actual name of the character so as to
prevent spoilers or rumors. I've seen this lots of times on Days.

That's a fair point. They also often send out casting calls for characters
who never end up on the show at all. A lot depends on the performers who
show up for the readings. Sometimes they will get a group of actors who
just aren't right for the role they're envisioning. And many times they
will make changes to a part based on the people who show up for the
auditions. They'll find an actor or actress they really like and want for
the show, so they'll modify a part or create a whole new part for the person
they found. It's a very strange and fluid process.
