Daphne was the wife of crime-boss Stefano DiMera, member the notorious
DiMera family. They were married by common law, as they had lived
together for many years. Daphne knew that Stefano was involved in many
illegal practices, but loved him anyway. Although Daphne and Stefano
were together for a long time, they both had extra-marital affairs.
Daphne had an affair with an employee of DiMera Enterprises named Enrico
and she became pregnant. When Stefano found out that his wife was having
an affair with Enrico, he had him killed. Daphne knew that Stefano was
responsible for Enrico’s death and also had witnessed Stefano kill one
of her servants. Daphne was taken aback by Stefano’s ruthless and evil
side, but knew that she couldn’t do anything about it. Daphne also
didn’t like how Stefano was raising an orphan named John Black. Daphne
knew that Stefano had taken the young boy under his wing, to make him
his pawn. Daphne was afraid that if her baby was born, Stefano would
make the child evil just like himself and Daphne didn’t want that. She
escaped Stefano and settled down in Australia, where she gave birth to
her son, which she named Antony, Tony for short. Daphne kept it a secret
from both Stefano and Tony that Enrico was actually Tony’s father.
Stefano knew that Daphne had been pregnant when she disappeared and
assumed the child was his. He moved heaven and earth to find his child,
but Daphne had hidden herself and Tony. But the inevitable happened when
Tony was a teenager. Stefano had tracked his child down and convinced
Tony to join DiMera Enterprises. Daphne was heartbroken when Tony left
her to move with his father to Europe.
Daphne visited Tony and Stefano in 1982, in the American city of Salem.
Daphne’s health had deteriorated and therefore she had to walk with a
cane. Stefano, Tony and Daphne lived together under the same roof, but
Daphne was terrified of Stefano. She knew he was up to no good and tried
to distance herself and Tony from him. Later, Daphne bought her own
apartment, where Tony lived with her in 1984. Daphne also let Kimberly
Brady live there for awhile, when Kim needed a place to stay. The
presence of Kim led to some uncomfortable situations, for instance when
Tony’s girlfriend Anna Fredericks saw Tony and Kimberly together and
didn’t know what to think about it. Tony and Anna had had a rocky
relationship ever since they got together. Tony had been in love with
Renee DuMonde before meeting Anna, but their relationship was cut short
when it was discovered that Stefano was Renee’s father as well. Tony
believed Stefano to be his father too and that made Renee and Tony half
siblings. Tony had moved on with Anna, but still harboured feelings for
Renee.
At Renee DuMonde’s wedding to her newfound love David Banning, Tony
confessed to Daphne that he still had feelings for Renee, although she
was his sister. Daphne felt sorry for her son and finally told him that
Stefano wasn’t his biological father. Tony first didn’t believe it, but
after they did some blood tests it was proven that Daphne was right:
Stefano wasn’t Tony’s biological father, Enrico was. Long after Daphne
died, in 1993, Tony returned to Salem. Stefano said that Tony was his
real son and Tony claimed that a ‘confused woman’ (Daphne) once said
that Stefano wasn’t his real father. The writers of Days of our Lives
changed history to make the DiMera family more interesting. Daphne
encouraged her son to tell Renee about his feelings and the fact that
they weren’t related after all. Sadly, Renee had vowed to stay with
David and shut out all her feelings for Tony. Daphne felt sorry for
Tony, but didn’t know what to do about it, until Stefano died of a
stroke. Feeling safer, Daphne moved in with Tony in the DiMera Mansion
and became friends with Renee. Daphne tried to prove that Renee still
had feelings for Tony, but had little luck in doing so. Meanwhile,
Daphne had also befriended Tony’s ex-wife Liz Chandler and even helped
her cover up a crime she had committed. However, when the police
questioned Daphne, she was forced to tell the truth. Daphne’s and
Renee’s friendship suffered too, as Renee found out Daphne had known
about a secret will of Stefano and hadn’t told her anything about it.
The will left Renee the entire DiMera fortune, but on the night Renee
revealed the will in public, she was murdered. Daphne was one of the
main suspects, as it was believed she wanted some of the money for
herself. However, it eventually turned out Daphne was innocent.
In 1984, Stefano, who was still alive as he only had staged his death,
was suffering from a brain tumor and he believed that the power of three
prisms put together could heal him. The first prism was lost in a river,
but the second prism was made into a necklace, a piece of jewellery
owned by Daphne. Stefano wanted to have it and his henchmen went to
Daphne’s apartment when she wasn’t at home. They turned the place
upside-down, but they couldn’t find the prism, because Kimberly was
wearing the necklace that night. When Daphne and Kimberly returned home,
they were shocked to find the apartment messed up. Daphne got extra
security and put her safe under heavy protection. Daphne suffered a
heart attack and was hospitalised. In the hospital she was visited by
DiMera henchmen, who all tried to find out where Daphne was keeping her
necklace. When seamstress Calliope Jones of Anna DiMera Designs saw the
necklace that Kimberly had borrowed from Daphne, she wanted to use it in
a photo shoot in Haiti and she asked if she could borrow it from Daphne.
Daphne agreed with her, but only if she could come along with them to
Haiti. That was okay with Calliope. During the flight the pilot had a
heart attack and he died. The plane crashed and Daphne was terribly
wounded. Tony was with Daphne during the ill-fated trip to Haiti, but
after the crash, Stefano’s nephew André DiMera, who looked exactly like
Tony thanks to plastic surgery, was with Daphne all the time. André was
also the one who was responsible for the murder of Renee, as she had
found out he was masquerading as Tony. Tony was separated from his
mother, elsewhere on the island. Before Tony could find his way back,
Daphne was already dying from her injuries. Tony hadn’t found the group
and André sat by Daphne’s side, pretending to be Tony, when Daphne died.
Daphne knew that it wasn’t her son who was with her, and wanted to
expose André. Unfortunately, her last words were “Tony, I love Tony,
but…” and then she died, before she could tell the truth.
