The train that Victoria rides during the opening credits is apparently
an Amtrak "Downeaster", featuring equipment that won't exist for
another 20 to 30 years after the film is set (1972), and featuring the
current Amtrak logo, which was adopted in 2000.

In 1760, there was no state of Maine. That territory was part of
Massachusetts. Maine did not become a state until 1820.

While talking with Carolyn, Barnabas recites the lyrics to the song
"The Joker" by the Steve Miller Band. This song wasn't recorded until
1973, one year after the movie's setting.

When Barnabus is on fire and doused with water the inside of the
bucket appears dry.

Towards the end when Angelique and Barnabas are in her office, he
opens the door and is chained into a coffin. The lid of this coffin is
separate. However, later when we see Angelique opening and shutting
this coffin, it appears to be on hinges.

When Barnabus and Angelique are in the drawing room, Angelique's
lipstick mark on Barnabus' chin disappears and reappears between
shots.

When the police and the inhabitants of the town rush to the Collins
mansion, the crowd arrives only two seconds behind the police cars,
although they were on foot.

Not defending the DS movie (as I haven't seen it yet), but these kinds
of continuity errors and anachronisms are common in movies. There are
whole web sites devoted to enumerating them.

Well, Vicky always was a time traveler!

As for the others, remember it just wouldn't be Dark Shadows without flubs!

And i've never understood how they happen when you consider the movie
producdtion has a whole continuity departtment that is supposed to
find these things before the movei is released.

Nowhere in the movie is it ever called a state. In Barnabas' narrative
concerning the events of the 1760s, he only calls it the "land of
Maine."

Which means he should have called it the "land of Massachusetts."

Sounds to me like Maine is plausable:

"American and British forces contended for Maine's territory during the
American Revolution and the War of 1812, and British forces occupied
eastern Maine in both conflicts.[21] The treaty concluding revolution
was ambiguous about Maine's boundary with British North America. The
territory of Maine was confirmed as part of Massachusetts when the
United States was formed, although the final border with British
territory was not established until the Webster-Ashburton Treaty of 1842."

Yeah, I know it's Wikipedia, but on non-controversial topics, they are
usually pretty reliable.

I live in Maine, and watched the original "Dark Shadows" from 1969 to its
end. Maine was indeed part of Massachusetts until 1820. Before statehood, it
was referred to as the "District of Maine." Close enough.

All passenger rail service into Maine (via Boston and Maine Railroad) ceased
in 1965. Therefore, Vicki could not have arrived by rail even at the
beginning of the TV series (1966). Knowing all this doesn't diminish my
enjoyment of the series in any way. It is a work of fiction, anyway.

You are correct about continuity errors. Film history is riddled with them.

Lol, TIm! I had forgotten that long discussion from this group's past
history! Funny.
