Hi! I am new to this board. I watched Dark Shadows many (full) moons
ago and always wondered this....which actors were gay and which were
straight? It was my favorite show....so many good looking actors (and
actresses) on board...never mind flubbed lines...it was very aesthetic
to watch.

The ones who were straight were the ones who weren't gay. Unless they
were bi.

I posted ths previously and got a funny response. Why I am asking is
that I have a bet with my sister (dinner out- what a treat). When we
were growing up, we used to watch the show religiously in my Grandmom's
room.....my sister first fell in love with Joel Carruthers, then it was
Roger Davis, then Don Briscoe, then David Selby and then James Storm
before she finally got her own boyfriend and then it stopped. I told
her that I had gotten reinterested in DS and she couldn't believe there
were gay actors on the show (naive, simply naive) especially any of
these gorgeous guys. Well some of the answers are obvious and some are
not. I really could use a night out and a geat dinner (and of course,
my sister is great company). Can anyone help me with this?

Thanks in advance. If I win dinner, I'll toast a glass of wine to you!

Well, here's the short answer: tell your sister she owes you a dinner. Several
of the key DS players are/were gay....if she wants details, though, she might
want to consult Liz Smith...

I am a gay man, "out, loud and proud," but I don't make an issue out
of it here in this group. I approach your question gingerly because,
as you know, for practical reasons, gay actors had to remain much
more circumspect in the 60's and 70's (except for Paul Lynde and
Charles Nelson Reilly). Some of the DS gentlemen are still alive, and
people in this group have met them at conventions, etc., admire them,
and might fear that "outing" a beloved star could be disrepectful.

I think Joel Crothers was gay, at least from what I've heard here in
this newsgroup, but I know of no other substantiated reports about any
DS denizens in the "kinescope closet."

I think more than one of the male members of the DS ensemble (Bernau
and Stroka?) performed in the original Broadway run of "The Boys in
the Band," a breakthrough play about the lives of gay men which was
made into a film in 1970. Of course playing a gay role doesn't
preclude that the actors are gay.

I hope you win a paid dinner from your sister!

P.S. O revered Ghost of Morgan Collins, where are you? You should be

My kids are regular viewers of "The Munsters," shown at 6:00 a.m. here, just
before "Sailor Moon" and "Pokemon." Yesterday, Paul Lynde made a guest
appearance. I heard that distinctive voice and had to rush to the living
room. He looked so young, but the voice was the same. I loved him as Uncle
Arthur on Bewitched.

Same here. But it doesn't really matter, since I was only interested in
the acting, especially for those hunks on DS. And right, it was up to
them what they wanted the public to know. The tradegy was that so many
died too young because of AIDS. Dying too young is a tradegy whether it
was AIDS, cancer, car accidents.....

thank you for the kind and honest answer. i was in no way trying to be
disrespectful and i do understand the delicacy of the information i was
asking for. i am seeing my sister this weekend and expect a free
dinner....you have to understand that this question was not posted
to "intrude or cause harm" to the actors but to prove a point with a
sister who always wins and is always right. i also want to pound home
the point (if it is possible) that it shouldn't matter who is gay or
straight (since she does not know if i am one way or the other and i
prefer to keep it that way and just be "adrogynous") but to love the
person and appreciate them for who they are.

if i sound like i have issues with my sister, i do and if i sound like
i am on a soap box, i guess i am.

There might be a way to answer this a little more directly (and LESS
directly) at the same time.

A few DS actors are in well-known long-lasting marriages:
ex: Jerry Lacy to Julia Duffy

Some were known to prowl the town "looking for chicks" and take Dan
Curtis out on the town- much to his delight.
Roger Davis (and his buddy Don Briscoe) [And Davis dated Jacklyn
Smith for quite a while, too. I saw them together at Farmer's Market
near CBS...]

Now really... if an actor doesn't fit into the above categories AND
they played a cultured gentleman, please "do the math" as
Nathan Lane used to say.

If they were especially good-looking and died in the late 70s and 80s
that should be a definite (tragic) hint, also.

Beyond the gossip element here, this is a little interesting in that at
least one or two of them played characters with distinct "secrets" that
they were hiding from other characters.

Were they playing on two levels? Method acting? Probably... with a dash
of Olivier, too...

Before I knew what gay was (or that I was it) I knew that both Paul Lynde
and Jonathan Harris were queens.

also: Hayden Rourke (Dr. Bellows on JEANNIE) and Ironsides

Yes, Sarah. I think Grayson Hall may have been associated with her
oscar-nominated role as Judith Fellowes, the gym teacher from a girl's
school who Richard Burton accuses as being a lesbian in "Night of the
Iguana." (in 1960's sexist terms, "lesbian" = any sexually unfulfilled
female). Dr. Julia Hoffmann was a strong, unconventional character
(she could cure vampirism, and more unbelievably, was a woman doctor
in the 1960's!). Her love for Barnabas, although a male, had to be
kept secret, and was "forbidden" or "tabu" (since he was a vampire),
and any homosexual, male or female can relate to these tensions. When
your spectral nephew returns from his dark journeys, maybe he can tell
you more about this.

By the way, I'm glad you're back. I missed you.

Actually, she was rather striking, but neither DS nor That Darn Cat did
anything to help her appearance. The overload of make-up on her angular face
didn't help, either. But if you look back at photos of models in the fashions
and make-up of the 60's, she is not too unusual looking.

I'm not overly concerned about the actors being gay, it's the writers
that I was sure might have had a few of that persuasion. The lines
seemed all too close to Barnabas being "ashamed" of his sinful "urges to
cruise," so to speak. Not to mention the Barnabus and Willie
relationship. And throw in a tough female "friend" and you have a party.
