Excuse me.....I was in the midst of planning my Oct 30th jaunt to
Crawfordsville, IN to see Jonathan Frid. I called my travel agent and said
"Book me a flight to Crawfordsville!" When the travel agent picked herself up
off the floor from laughing, she retorted, "Not only will you need a plane, but
you will also need to take a train, a bus, a car, and when the road runs out,
you'll have to walk the rest of the way to Crawfordsville!! Pack lightly!!!"
Perhaps Crawfordsville has a horse and buggy charter service that would meet my
rental car at the county line and escort me into this Midwestern Metropolis.
What type of accomodations should one expect in Crawfordsville? The Shadey
Rest Motel and a Waffle House? Does Frid know even know where Crawfordsville
is? If I were looking to raise a great deal of charitable funds for these
obviously worthwhile causes......I would seek a better venue......one that has
a) Access via major roads b) airport or runway c) people.

Let's face it.....Chicago or even Indianapolis would have been excellent
choices. I'm all for these charities....especially for them to raise lots of
money. But how can they do that when this show is playing in a hicktown with
one DS collector in residence? If Frid was truly interested in raising
charitable dollars for his performance he would go to a DS convention in a
MAJOR U.S. city where 1000's of fans would gladly pay extra or make a charitble
donation to see him. Instead, he is patronizing "ONE" DS fan in
"No-where's-ville". I live in the Midwest and would love to see Mr. Frid
without having to go through a "Deliverance" type of experience in order to see
him. What next? Mayberry? Hooterville? Or worse yet...Carpentersville, IL?
I hope that Mr. Frid will pick a REAL Midwestern city where his show will be
seen instead of Green Acres......where half of his audience will be friends or
relatives of Arnold Ziffel. Maybe Mr. Frid could rename his show..."Fools and
Farm Animals" for this illustrious Crawfordsville extravaganza!!

Still Waiting for the Midwestern Show .....Because this ain't it!!!!

Quote: " In 1999, 3 people went in search of Frid's performance in
Crawfordsville and never were heard from again. 1 year later, their film
footage was found."

I've often stayed in Crawfordsville. It's very nice though not an urban
playground. It's right on route 74 between Indianapolis and Peoria, IL.
The Holiday Inn there is very nice, as are several other motels. I wish
I could be there but I'm doing a Halloween production that night at our
local theatre. Have fun!

Well, actually, I'm glad you brought it up, cuz the entire Crawfordville
local is an interesting thing. You see, I have a relative by the name of Uncle
Joe. He goes around helping people and stuff. You know, donates stuff and works
for charity and
helps old ladies cross the road and stuff, (sometimes kickin' and screamin'
even if she don't want to go, but that's only for her own good, ya see) , ..
Well, as someone once said in this newgroup a very long time ago "Only one
person was ever perfect, and he died a long time ago..." Well, the person erred
in stating that Uncle Joe was dead, but they were right when they said that he
was nothing short of immaculate. And short, too.
Crawfordville is a part of an ancient prophecy that states that Uncle Joe
will once day return there in the form of himself after a 15 day sojourn in
Hawaii to judge the shit-heads and the healers, the whiners and the true
servants, the sickly in need; evil grasper, and the true friend.
Ala a Michael Moore from the Heavens, Uncle Joe will strike down upon the
Evil-doers, not out of Evil, but out of the awful necessity to protect the
faithful. Be varned now, the Evil shall all go the way of Tom Selleck.
And to conclude, to quote Kate Winslet, in a line from one of my favorites
film, "STICK IT UP YOUR BOTTOM!!!!!!!!!" And with a cute Brit accent, too!

Respectfully Yours,
Rudy

<snipped nonsense>

How are you doing this when you are hosting your own Halloween party on that
weekend? Do you have reliable I-Ching wands that will allow you to be on the
east coast and then in the midwest on the same day?

Why are you so jealous over an event that wants to raise money for terminally
ill children?

Has sour grapes warped your thinking that much?

I totally agree with this post!!! LOL The reason why you coordinate a
charitable event is to raise as MUCH money as possible. I would love to see
Jonathan and know that my entrance fee benefitted charity. But can we chose
a city the general public can get to? Jonathan hasn't done a convention in
years!!!! His fans would flock in droves and leave donations to see the man.
But the site has to be more "cosmopolitan" than Crawfordsville. Why
Crawfordsville, indeed? For such a distinguished actor to appear in such a
rural locale is odd to say the least. Is he taking on a Rolling Stones
mentality and simply wants to perform in small venues? Are there alterior
motives involved in this booking? Will Jonathan be staying at the lone
Holiday Inn? This is no charitable event.

Yeah, I agree with this 100 percent. There has to be some massive conspiracy
going on. It started with Nancy Barrett doing a charity benefit last year in
Coffeyville, Kansas on Halloween weekend. What is wrong with these actors
going to small venues to raise money for the local community's pet projects?
They have one hell of a nerve doing that kind of thing.

I agree -- there has to be some other motivation. I mean, who goes and raises
money for local charities?

By the way, the word is "ulterior" not "alterior", LOL!! If you're gonna
troll, better pack the Dumb Troller's Dictionary. You are in desperate need of
it.

How funny that a DS fan would be so upset about the appearance of a DS actor
somewhere in the country. Were you as upset last year regarding Nancy
Barrett's benefit performance in a small town in the midwest?

While I can understand why some might be curious why Jonathan chose
Crawfordsville for one of his few US performances, there are far more
diplomatic ways to express those thoughts.

As for Nancy Barrett's show last year, it was held to benefit the
renovation of a theatre near the area where she grew up.

One reason one might choose a suburb over a big city, is the PRICE of
renting the performance hall, hotels/motels, and other considerations
that would, otherwise, severely cut into the profits of such a venture.
If the venue is centrally-located and easy to find, that may have more
in its favor than battling traffic in a large, maze-like metropolis.
It's nice that a couple of these events should take place in the
Midwest, as the fans out there are the ones who are most likely to feel
left out of Festivals on the East and West Coasts (and the one in Las
Vegas, that required a major financial commitment from virtually ANYONE
who attended, save those few who actually LIVED in Vegas.)
At one time, there was talk of a "mini-Festival" in the Midwest (a
couple of DS stars were actually set to appear), but plans were dropped
due to lack of interest (this was back in 1996 or '97.)
While a large gathering may not be practical, appearances by these two
DS stars, who hadn't been considered "available" for some years, should
go some way toward righting this "imbalance."

If a DS "celebrity" chooses to bestow a visit on a small town to help their
local charity, then let the local people there support it. After all, they
are the beneficiaries. It is an extreme presumption on the part of the
promoters of these events to assume that DS fans across North America will
flock to any locale, no matter how remote, just because a DS actor is coming
out of hiding.....if they do, it won't be because they give a crap about the
charity. I suspect that there are not enough Crawfordsville natives with
congnizance of DS to fill an outhouse....and without a nationwide cattle call
for DS fans....the event would be an embarassment.

If these DS "celebrities" have such star power.....why don't they use it
where it will do some real good.....and start scheduling charity performances
in cities with names that don't end in "ville"

Hi. He did not "choose" Crawfordsville, he was asked through a friend to do
the show for a local charity. No mystery.

As someone who happens to live in a town that ends in "ville," I resemble that
remark. LOL!

Personally, I am *thrilled* that a Dark Shadows star is performing within
driving distance of where I live. WHOO!!! HOOOOO!!!

::packing bags; ordering TripTik::

I know that some - not all, of course - people on the East and West coasts tend
to look at the map of the U.S. and see nothing but vast wasteland in between
L.A and N.Y. ;)

But there are plenty of folks in the middle section of the country who truly
enjoy good theater - and who appreciate helping out charity in the process. :)

Wow. Talk about making something out of nothing. What is the problem here?
There are three other events this year in larger metropolitian areas this year
where DS actors will be making appearances. There is the Dark Shadows Festival
in New York City in August, there is the Halloween Party in Norwalk,
Connecticut on the Holiday weekend) and then, also on Halloween Weekend, is
Chiller Theater where Lara Parker and Kathryn Leigh Scott will be making
appearances. And Crawsfordsville, Indiana is near several large cities,
including Chicago and SciFi is shown all over the cable market there in the
midwest. It's a nice central locale that without or without DS fans coming in,
would do well simply because the townspeople are into charity work and support
it.

It sounds as if the bitterness behind all these posts has to do with something
else than a concern over DS fans for they have several opportunties to see DS
actors this year.

I am posting an OT note..

Tonight Masterpiece Theatre showed the Kenneth Branaugh Much Ado About
Nothing.

This is a great film, and shows the great chemisty KB had with his ex-
wife Emma Thompson.

What does this have to do with DS?? Well, at the last Fest he attended,
1993, Jonathan Frid said he thought this film was a great example of
Shakespeare on film, and isn't he one to know??

I think that it is nice that he is doing a performance in the Midwest,
though I hope it will be easy for audience members to get there.

On a purely frivolous note, if Jonathan and Lara are in touch with each
other, would they be interested in doing a benefit performance of "Love
Letters" together?? How wonderful they would be in that, and that is done
in a Reader's Theatre Format, I believe??

Jonathan and Lara doing "Love Letters" would be marvelous!

Of course, with Angelique, perhaps it should be called "Poison Pen
Letters?" : )

I believe, Mr Frid may have been asked to do his show in Crawfordsville,
and for a worthy cause. How that could possibly anger anyone is beyond
comprehension. Some of you want to see Mr. Frid, but only on your terms.
The man is 74 years old. It is remarkable to me that he is so willing
to give what is left of his time and energy to help others. Only to be
admonished?! Yet, Pomegranite Press has made a living from DS fandom
for years with never a harsh word or admonition by those it is "feeding
off".

Bravo, Mr. Frid! and Thank You!
