Just got my copy of Entertainment Weekly, and they gave it a very nice
review and a score of B+. Critic Owen Gleiberman especially praises
Depp's portrayal of Barnabas:
"Depp's performance is more than just funny - it's ghooulishly
endearing. He caresses each line with great care, as if it were a piece
of candy he's unwrapping, and he gives Barnabas, in his very "demonic"
intensity, a quality of almost elfin innocence that recalls the
charactrers Depp has most memorably played for Burton: Edward
Scissorhands, Ed Wood, and Willy Wonka."
And later...
"Barnabas' heart, you see, is too pure for Angelique. He's saving
himself for Victoria, the otherworldly governness. Dark Shadows, a kinky
love triangle, is true, in its fashion, to the spirit of the old soap
opera. Yet its real love affair is between Johnny Depp and the audience
who's still hooked on seeing him get his freak on."
I was especially thrilled to read that they used one of my very favorite
lines from the show in the film, where Barnabas tells Vicki that
Victoria is such a beautiful name that he couldn't bring himself to
surrender a syllable of it. :)

too, believe that is one of the best lines ever spoken by Barnabas or
any other character on the show.
Hmmmm, maybe we should start a thread with everyone's favorite, or
not, line?

Only a fan of the original would have picked up on that line I think.

At least that's something. I agree with you. I would be thrilled (and
surprised) to hear that line as well.
