Hey all!
Though this might be something you would all be interested in. I was
surfing the web and ran across a Video of Joan Bennett testing for the role
of Scarlett O'Hara in Gone with the Wind. It takes forever to load the whole
thing but is really kind of neat to see if you haven't already. Here is the

Thank you Scarlett. I'm a big GWTW fan. Still love that scene when Scarlett
dances the Virgina Reel with Rhett while she's in mourning (and Aunt Piddy
gets the vapors).

No Problem, glad I'm not the only one here! And no everyone, Scarlett is my
real name...although my mom did say she got it from the movie! *S*

Hehe, That's great! I also love it when she walks in the room with that
gorgeous red dress...she really looks quite the devil in it though! ;)

-Scarlett (not O'Hara bit it will have to do)
(Mysterious lady in the red dress in the West Wing) Confused?

Thanks Scarlett! I'm a dyed-in-the-wool Southerner (who absolutely
hates living in Kansas) and big GWTW fan. I downloaded Joan's screen
test. All DS fans should see it (It's the famous scene alone with
Ashley while he's chopping wood). I think, however, Joan played it far
too melodramatic (not a problem for DS). Of course. If I had been
around in '38 or '39, I would have resented that "British import"
Vivien Leigh and rooted for Paulette Goddard.

I'm here to serve all of you fellow DS/GWTW fans (could there be a bigger
difference between the two? lol!)

I thought she was pretty good as well, a little melodramatic perhaps.... ;)
but if you look around on that site it says that she was in the small group
of 4 possible people for the role for Scarlett till Vivian Leigh came along!

From what I recall from a show about the casting of Scarlett, Joan was
one of the finalists for the role (Jean Arthur was considered the
front-runner, though there was some concern about whether or not she
could "pull it off."). Joan's scene with a would-be Ashley (when
Scarlett declares her love) was considered by some to be weepy and
melodramatic, while Jean's and Vivian Leigh's were touched with a kind
of defiance of social convention.
