Quietly making his way around the basement rooms Willie finds the
familiar stars that lead to the main part of the great house, going up
to the closed door Willie slowly peers out the small barred window to
see if it was safe for him to make his way up stairs to find
Barnabas'' room, Peeking out softly so that he can not to be
seen, Willie sees Joshua Collins standing by the
front entry doors, he is speaking to a servant woman, Willie knew he
is speaking about Barnabas after hearing his name and by Joshua
pointing upstairs after which the woman dressed in long dress with an
apron and a white maids bonnet on her head nods, replying "Yes sir Mr.
Collins." Then curtsies, and hurries though the drawing room exiting
behind the French double doors that lead to the kitchen. Willie could
feel the sweat on his brow as he tries to remember which room was
Barnabas', after a small panic attack Willie gathers himself together,
thinking to himself. "OK, so Barnabas never did have a room upstairs,
but I remember seein a room that looked as if it could have belonged to
a kid with toys and stuff, I just need ta find that room. Listening
intently Willie opens the heavy door slowly, thankful that unlike the
same door in the future this one does not squeak when its opened.
Coming out into the open Willie is fortunate that no one was
sitting in the drawing room or that he was seen by a wondering servant,
no one was in sight, hurrying up the stairs Willie strides two
steps at a time for a quicker assent, reaching the top of the
stairs Willie was suddenly struck at how beautiful the Old House was
when it was still rather new and of course occupied, he began to make
mental notes of everything he saw for when he returned to his own
time, so he could try to make the Old House shine as it once did...
Willie was not a Collins but he appreciated the beauty of the superior
workmanship that was the Collinwood of old. "How could the family
have allowed such a grand place like this fall to ruin... if it
were." Willie's reverie was interrupted when he heard some one trying
to catch his attention, then looking down the hallway Willie thinks he
is seeing David... then remembers it is Barnabas motioning to
him. Quickly he hurries down to the door, slipping inside the room,
Barnabas steps out into the hallway to checks to see if anyone saw them,
he then quickly closes and locks his bedroom door.
Once inside Willie looked around young Barnabas' room, seeing
how barren it was compared to that of David Collins' room, where David
had pictures and posters on his walls and toys all around Barnabas had
a few small paintings and no toys at all from he could see, just
a simple single bed close to a rather small window with almost the
same design window treatments as he brought down from the attic shortly
after he began to work for Barnabas although these were made of a more
heavy material no doubt because of the rough winters. Willie
also noticed the high back chairs that were in the drawing room
are here in Barnabas' room. "No wonder he likes these chairs so
much, he had them since he was a kid." Sitting on the bed
Barnabas points to one of the high back chairs in a jester for him to
sit there instead, taking his gesture as an order Willie stood up from
the bed and sat where Barnabas indicated.
Looking concerned Willie asked Barnabas about his confrontation
with his father. "Did ya get paddled Barnabas, your father seemed pretty
mad at ya." Barnabas folds his hands before him, Willie knew that
meant his question bothered Barnabas, it was his way of showing
discomfort. "I'm sure he would have Willie but I had forgotten that
my Mother always seemed to know when father was in one of his moods, she
intervened on my behalf, forbidding my father to punish me, so I was
sent to my room to wait and be called to dinner, my father thought I had
stolen the clothes I was wearing, they were after all very strange
clothes. Willie nods his head. "So now what are we going ta do
Barnabas." Getting up from his chair Barnabas goes to his wardrobe,
he opens it, reaching inside he takes out a small suit case, placing it
on his bed he calls Willie over. "Come here Willie, this belonged to
my cousin, Malcolm an older cousin who visited us a year ago from
Boston, father sent him home at once and wouldn't allow him to come
back for his things after he and I discovered cousin Malcolm with
a woman in the village whom father said was of ill repute,
I brought his clothes here in case he ever came back, as you see I
still have them. Willie looked though the clothes, at Barnabas'
urging Willie tried some of the clothes on, as he put on the jacket of a
suit there was a knock at the door. Barnabas shouts out. "One
moment please. Willie takes the clothes and suit case, stepping
into the wardrobe he hides inside. Barnabas holds his hand
up so that Willie does not move, then closes the door, going to
the door he unlocks it, opens the door just slightly and inquires.
"Yes." Politely the maid curtsies. "Yes, master Barnabas, I came
to call you to supper." Nodding his head Barnabas politely replies.
"Thank you." Again the pretty maid curtsies then walks
away. Barnabas closes and locks his bedroom door, he hurries to the
wardrobe door then opens it, Willie steps out. "Barnabas, how am I
gonna get around, I don't see how I can be of any help in this time."
Barnabas looks at Willie then comes up with a plan. "I know of a
way to get you into the house as a welcomed guest." Willie sits
on the bed, his expression is one of both wonder and doubt.
