It's time for a new computer and I need advise. The computer I'm using
is five years old and I'm going to give it to my kids for games and
word processing. I'm looking at a Compaq but I need opinions.

Gateway has been very good for me; I just got a second one, in fact! I know
very little about them, actually; just that I like it when they work! Gateway
offers good support for the other times...

I like Gateway also. A big plus is that you can upgrade every two years.
They will give you an allowance for the worth of your present computer
towards your new one.
Dell computers are very good also.

Oops. That is, if your presend computer is a Gateway and you signed up for
this special deal when you bought it.

I agree with Virginia. Whatever you do, Ray, don't buy a Packard Bell,
no matter how attractive their prices at Wal-Mart! They are getting out
of the home PC biz altogether. I recently helped somebody pick out a
new computer. We chose a Compaq Presario 5441 for about $600 from
PCMall's website(we avoided the internet rebate which would have
brought the price down to $200). It's worth recommending. I think
Office Depot carries some Presario models too.

I agree with Virginia also. My first computer was a PB and using it was a
frustrating experience. I always thought that PB was one of the big names in
the computer business (which, I guess it was) but having a familiar name
doesn't always mean it's a good product. And the people at their support
line were not only of no help.....they were rude. I guess one learns from
one's mistakes.

My first computer was a Compaq and I also had a Compaq lap top.
While they're not bad computers, Compaq's customer service has
been rated in computer magazines at the bottom of the barrel and
I've found that to be quite accurate.

Don't know which Mags your reading, but I have a Compaq and the customer
service is the best that I have seen in 15 yrs. of computing. Online support
is fantastic.

You cut off part of the comment. The full comment was:

It's personal experience that leads me to agree with the magazine
reports I read. I'm not just repeating articles I've read.

Okay! I do find it interesting how people can have such
vastly different experiences with the same company. And
not just Comqaq.

I have two Packard Bells, one is ten years old (upgraded), one is a year and
a half old. Both have been excellent computers and I have never had a
problem getting help, even when it was over the telephone and not the net.
I'm sold on them. Paula
