would appear that it's a region 0 disk !
The disk is labeled region 1 as you'd expect. My dvd player is the type that
you can set to a specific region, and I'd left it on region 2. Without
thinking I put the daria disk in and it played !
I get the same result with my pc dvd drive set to region 2, so it looks like
somebody at mtv has made a mistake somewhere.
Can anyone else with an imported copy check this out? I may just have a
strange copy, but I doubt it.

When I play my copy on an unhacked R2 DVD player, I get a signal that a
PAL-only TV can't display properly, but which works fine on a TV known to be
NTSC capable.
I've not got access to a known R1 DVD, so I can't rule out the very small
possibility that the DVD player sold as R2 is really multi-region.
This does make for interesting speculation. Perhaps MTV heeded DVDaria[1],
and planned to issue a region-free release, to maximise the market, but
someone mucked up and, from force of habit, labelled it as R1.
Or perhaps there was an error in production. If it's the latter, then the
error may be corrected in the second pressing: people who order today can
hope they'll get one from the R0 batch, but they can't be sure of it. And
since it's sold as R1, they'll have no recourse if that's what they get.

You mean it wraps around the bottom of the screen? Or it looks
"letterbox"-ish?
(I've seen this, and it usually has nothing to do with the colour
conversion, i.e. whether you have an NTSC compatible set or not. It is
more likely that it was recorded with a US screen shape, i.e. 525 lines at
60Hz, which older TV's cannot deal with. The answer is to use a TV that
can have its frame settings controlled via the SCART line from whatever
you have plugged into it.)

Depends. If you bought it from a high street store, it is unlikely. If you
bought it from a specialist, it is more possible (I've done this myself
and they will sometimes offer this service free of charge if the deed can
be done without physically opening the box). If you bought it via a
website, almost certainly.

Or maybe it was a last minute change, and they didn't have time/didn't

I haven't explored both additional episodes yet, but it appears that the
included version of "Dye, Dye my Darling" is without closing music and some
of the incidental music in the program itself.
If this is the case, a LARGE raspberry to MTV for failing to get the proper
clearances!

The TV displays several images, vertically shifted and superimposed, and
rolling. Looks just like what happened when I played a NTSC tape into that
TV. The TV it works on is actually a cheap dual-format video presenter (14"
TV with built-in videotape player) that I have access to.
I'm hoping to upgrade the house TV the next time the Granada warehouse has a
sell-off of ex-rental tellies. Unless my premium bonds write home to dada
first! 8-)

Yup. That sounds like a frame/scan rate error. Fixed scan TV's will do
that because they have their rates fixed by the mains rate (50Hz). In the
case of combined sets, it isn't unusual to cut a few corners seeing that
it is usually the case that (at least when they were first launched) you
wouldn't need to plug anything else in.

There is a danger here, of course.
1. UK and other European fans buy IIFY DVDs from the US.
2. Paramount release IIFY as a Region Two DVD.
3. Few buy it, 'cos we've already got an imported copy.
4. Paramount say, "Sheesh, that sold poorly. We won't release any more Daria
products in Region Two."
My cunning plan: buy the R2 release when (if) it's realeased, and then eBay
the imported one.

There is of course the other thing that makes me a bit jittery, in that if
the disk is R1 and not R0 then it is technically illeagal to import IIRC.

I am not lawyer, and I don't claim to know what's what, but the advice I've
read suggests to me that
- it's not illegal for a consumer to import one copy for their own use.
- it is illegal to distribute imported copies in the UK.
- it may be illegal to import copies with the intention of distributing
them.
So if the above is accurate, you won't break the law by importing one for
yourself; but you will by importing two at once to save postage, and selling
the second to a friend.

1, I have no way of knowing if there's any difference. But what I'd like to
think is that MTV is lying to whatever agency decided which disk belongs in
which region and is labeling Region 0 disks as Region 1, in order to gain
some overseas sales to make up for what they assume is a loss in American
sales. If this is the case, I say yay for regions 2-6, and if there's a
recall on the disc, I will not comply.
