For some reason, in most daria episodes she has this high pitched annoying
voice. But in the episode where the skewl is selling chocolate and the fat lady
dies, her voice is much deeper.

There are two schools of thought on this phenomenon:

1) Two different people have performed Brittany's voice, Lisa Collins
and Janie Mertz. Ms. Collins was credited in episodes #101
("Esteemsters") through #110 ("The Big House"), while Ms. Mertz was
credited from episode #111 ("Road Worrier") to the present (currently
episode #213, "Write Where it Hurts"). Two different people would
explain why Brittany's voice is now different from when it started.

2) Ms. Collins and Ms. Mertz are the same person, but Brittany's
voice evolved from "Esteemsters" to the present (much like Homer
Simpson's voice changed from the early "Simpsons" episodes to the
present).

I have no proof of #2, but I'm starting to lean towards it. Why?
Because Ms. Collins is supposed to have also performed the voice of
Sandi, and *her* voice hasn't changed one iota since "Esteemsters".
It's not easy to replicate a voice down to every last nuance; just ask
Billy West, who took over as the voice of Ren Hoek in "Ren & Stimpy"
when John Kricfalusi (the original voice of Ren) was overthrown by
Nickelodeon.

If this is the case, then it's possible that Ms. Collins is now using
a different name for voiceover work. (This is certainly not unheard
of in the business, using a different name when doing stage/screen
work. Gates McFadden of STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION, for example,
uses her full name, Cheryl Gates McFadden, when she does choreographic
work [such as her choreography for the movie "Labyrinth"].)

Well, okay, it hasn't changed since "The Invitation". Yeah, that's
what I said before. :-) The point still stands that the only voice of
Lisa Collins' that changed is Brittany's; Sandi's and that of the
reporter for Sick, Sad World are still the same as they were almost
since the beginning. That's what is starting me to suspect that
Collins and Janie Mertz just *MIGHT* be one and the same.

BTW, yesterday's Planet Daria update has added to the Daria Voiceover
Controversy. According to PD, Andrea's voice is done by Susie Lewis
Lynn, and Jesse's voice is done by Tom Borillo. I don't give any
veracity to either one, since (A) Lewis Lynn isn't listed anywhere in
the voice credits, and (B) Borillo is *NEVER* listed (Willy Schwenz,
who was originally identified, comes up only in episodes with Jesse).
Now, I suppose it's possible that Borillo and Schwenz are the same
person, but unlike Collins/Mertz, I can't accept that since Borillo
has never been listed.

For now, on my site (Outpost Daria), Andrea's voice info will be
changed on the next update to "unknown at this time" (with current
theories listed), and Jesse's voice info will stay the same. I'm not
going to make any more changes until I'm satisfied that the changes
are justified.

Has *ANYONE* thought that we might be taking the whole thing a little too
seriously? Along the same line, has anyone thought of maybe e-mailing MTV to
get the right info?

We gotta have something to talk about until season 3 starts. :-) In
any event, it's a mystery... and I *HATE* not being able to solve a
mystery. It's worth following up for that, if nothing else (and
besides, I've always been a stickler for accuracy and details).

I've thought about it, but haven't taken the plunge yet.

I noticed at one point in "The Invitation" when Brittany says "Yes!" her
voice sounds just about as high-pitched as it does now full-time. Which
makes me think there's a chance that one person has done the voice the
whole time.

And emailing MTV might be about as useful as tits on a bull(sorry about that,
for the easily offended out there:)
