The writers of Dallas did a great job in keeping Jock alive long after his
death. For pretty much the whole of one season he was in South America before
he went missing in a plane crash. The following season his will and his
family's affection for him dominates the plot. This continues until the very
end of the entire run through that painting which often plays a starring role
in the plot. In my earlier posting about Clayton I mentioned the scene when
Jamie and Ellie talk about old times and Clayton looks uncomfortable.
Throughout that scene the portrait is always in camera shot so you know that
although Ellie and Clayton are married, Jock in still important in the lives of
the Ewings. When JR loses Ewing Oil to Jeremy Wendell, JR takes the painting
off the wall and shows it to John Ross saying "this is Ewing Oil". The
character Jock never really died, he was kept alive until the end through that
painting and constant references to him in the storyline.

Don't forget the Wes Parmalee thing when he came back pretending to be Jock
Ewing.

It was going to be true until the viewers complained.

The way the whole scene ended when he just upped and left one morning leaving a
note and explanation as to how he came to have Jock's things was more
unbelievable than Jock actually coming back

I liked the Wes Parmalee storyline and it would have been interesting if he had
turn out to be Jock. The producers really lost their guts after killing off
Bobby and then bringing his back. They should have taken the chance and
brought back Jock. It may have saved us from Carter Mackay and the Haleyville
storylines.

I sometimes think I was the only person who liked the Wes Parmalee storyline.
They mystery regarding whether or not he was Jock was skillfully sustained and
althougth the story was a little fantastic, the quality of the writing and
acting made it believeable. Even when Parmalee left there was still a little
mystery surrounding what he told Ellie and whether or lied to her about not
being Jock to spare her any further anguish.

Marc,

I think the way the storyline ended made the storyline worse! It was bad
idea, and frankly no one cared about Miss Ellie and Jock's younger years.
It was a bore!

Yes, this was an error. Bobby should have stayed dead and Wes (then Ben
Stivers) should have turned out to be the real Jock. This is why the actor
left, as he was hired to be the return of Jock, then finding the role would
be much smaller (which is why his departure was so abrupt). Then, in having
to back pedal and make him not Jock, the explanation was silly.

Once Bobby came back, the show lost credibility and VP finally left after
having to take a back seat to the male characters again. And from
there...James, lol...the horror. (He should play Shaggy in the new Scooby
doo movie the way he flailed around)

Yes, amazing Pam was able to dream the coming of Jock, lol. Too bad Pam's
bad driving made us lose such a vital character to the show, haha. I think
it would have been great to see Bobby stay dead and have Pam vs. JR in
running EO (which is what they intended in the first place so it really
would have revitalized the show---but of course, they got scared with
Dynasty being a hit and went in a "dreamy" direction, haha.

He should have been the real Jock and clanked JR and Bobby's head together
when they doubted him like the real Jock would do, haha. The thing I didn't
like was them making Jock a saint in memories in later years. What made him
interesting that he was an anti-hero, a real guy with real flaws. They
later had him saving Jews (in that "Ellie She Wrote" murder mystery her and
Clayton went on in those dreadful later years.)

i thought it was a great storyline, he must have been Jock, otherwise how would
he have got hold of Jock's things and known things about Miss Ellie etc that
only Jock could have known about.

He was Jock and they should have seen it through and have him kick Clayton's
butt from Southfork

All the knowledge came from Jock's delirious ramblings when he had a fever
in the jungle. What was never explained, however, was when he was subjected
to a physical, including xrays, & the doctor confirmed that if he wasn't
Jock, he had all the same scars, broken bones, etc.

I think they conveniently forgot about the x-rays when they decided (at the
last minute, because of viewers' protests) not to make Wes be Jock.

It's a shame the writers/producers lost their bottle as making Wes in fact be
Jock would have changed the dynamics of the show, breathing new life into it
which may have save it. Following that season the series went rapidly down
hill.

Agreed. Those last 4 seasons are pretty terrible. They really painted
themselves into a corner by not recasting Jock and later, Pam.

I know that's how they explained it, but there's no way he could have picked up
all that from his ramblings in the jungle. the producers shit out big time
because of public pressure. He was meant to be Jock, but they changed the
script at the last moment.

they could have recast Jock much earlier after the helicopter crash. I know it
wouldn't have been popular because of Jim Davis' popularity, but the character
of Jock was pivital to the show and I always felt it wasn't quite the same
after Jock was killed.

Donna Reed became Miss Ellie for a series and then back to Barbara Bel Geddes.
Ted Shackleford became Gary Ewing.

The series needed Jock. The character should have been replaced when Jim Davis
died.
