First of all, there is a big hint in the '85-86 season finale that the
season was indeed a dream. If you watch carefully when Pam wakes up, she
doesn't have a wedding band on her finger even though she married Mark the
day before.
I remember reading in the tabloids that the producers filmed three
different endings to the cliffhanger. I saw pictures in the Enquirer of
J.R. embracing Bobby after he returned from the "dead." This ending
obviously was scrapped.
Personally, I think Bobby's revival would have been the best conclusion to
the cliffhanger. It would have set up an interesting Bobby/Pam/Mark
triangle (even though everybody knows Pam loves Bobby more, she's still
married to Mark). It also would have been interesting to see how they
resolved the bomb blasts issue (they could have stretched that into at
least a few episodes to determine the fates of Jamie, Sue Ellen and
Angelica).
Plus, knowing J.R., he would hire McSween (my most underrated character in
"Dallas," by the way) to do some digging and find out if Bobby was really
who he says he was. Once it was determined that he really was Bobby it
would set up an interesting battle between J.R. and Bobby for control of
Ewing Oil, considering Pam sold Christopher's share to J.R.
One thing that definitely had to go was the stupid Tony adoption plot.
