Great write up about Patrick Duffy's famous return to Dallas via the
it just was all a dream thing
*****
Bobby Ewing's return in the Dallas Season 9 season finale was kept a
secret from the rest of the cast, even his TV wife who finds him in
the shower!
Dallas was an extremely popular prime time soap opera about a Dallas
family who own an oil company as well as a cattle ranch.
The two main characters are brothers JR (Larry Hagman) and Bobby
(Patrick Duffy)
One of the initial storylines on Dallas was the Romeo and Juliet style
relationship between Bobby and his new bride, Pam Ewing (Victoria
Principal), who was part of a rival family...
Bobby was a very popular character, but after eight seasons on the
show, Patrick Duffy wanted to leave the show....
Bobby and Pam had divorced, but in the Season 8 finale, they reunited,
just in time for Bobby to run down and killed...
The ratings on the series dropped in Season 9. After five straight
seasons of the show being rated either first or second in the Nielsen
Ratings, the show dropped to #6 in Season 9. The show had also parted
ways with the show's co-showrunner, Leonard Katzman, in favor of
executive producer Philip Capice.
Larry Hagman missed Duffy and it wasn't like Duffy had spent the
previous years doing blockbuster movies or anything like that, so
Katzman and Hagman were able to convince Duffy to return to the series
(his salary almost doubling helped, as well). It was Duffy's wife,
Carlyn Rosser, who joked that the only way this could work would be if
the whole thing was a dream.
That's what they did. However, the whole thing was kept in the
strictest of secrecy. Victoria Principal's scene of Pam waking up and
going to the shower to see who was in it were filmed separately from
the scene of Duffy in the shower itself. His scenes were filmed under
the auspices of being a soap commercial.
Pam had re-married during Season 9, so the idea was that she was going
to find her new husband's dead body in the shower...
That was what others on the cast were told. However, for years, the
story had been that Principal was just as shocked as everyone else.
That she had called Duffy as soon as the episode aired, shocked at his
return.
That was not exactly true, though. Principal did an online chat with
Dallas fans in 2008 and she was asked whether it was true that it was
a surprise to her, she replied, "Well to some degree, yes. I
wasn t there the day he shot the scene that he was back; I knew before
it ever aired, Leonard Katzman told me. So I was delighted."
So while many people were surprised, Principal wasn't one of them!
The legend is...
STATUS: False
Thanks to Victoria Principal
