Richards did not make light of the rant - Larry David, who wrote the script,
which Richards merely acted, did.

Well, they always said that there is no scripted dialogue per se, just
a detailed outline... but even if you don't buy that (and I'm not
sure I always do), this interview with J.B. Smoove makes it sound like
he and Richards were fairly hands-on in figuring out how to deal with
the scene -
