Cute, but it won't matter much. All we're gonna need is a train we can
board cargo as travelling hobos.
Ya might wanna start watching documentaries on breadlines.
Obama admires FDR, which he will soon emulate. An African-American
FDR.
C'est tout. That's it , that's all.
And get this, it's not Bush's fault nor Republicans'. Confusing huh ?
So, now the people who screwed everything up (see Commodity Futures
Modernixation Act 1999) voted 95-0 in Senate and signed supported by
Bubba, are gonna repair it ? I dont think so.
Sell everything, and live off the grid.
I'm not of the belief that Obama or anybody else can control the
economy. Governments and leaders are far more adept at wreaking havoc
with economies than saving them and 99 times out of 100, the more they
meddle, the more mischief they create. God knows FDR tried to help. He
set up all those "alphabet soup" programs (where he did "smart" things
like raising milk prices by having farmers milk their cows, paying
them for the milk then ordering them to throw the milk away), he had
people literally digging holes and filling them in again, he got the
government heavily involved in agriculture, threatened to pack the
Supreme Court when they didn't give him everything he wanted and
everything else, but the economy more or less just laid there until
about mid-1942. I saw somewhere that unemployment steadily increased
under FDR until the war broke out. At any rate, FDR is always credited
with getting us out of the depression when it was actually Hitler,
Tojo and Mussolini that got us out of it. If Japan hadn't attacked us,
for all we know we might still be standing in soup lines.
so thefact that bush and the republicans have been in charge for the
past 8 years is meaningless?
if he was the fucking genius you seem to think why didn't he see this
coming.
its not the lack of regulation that caused the abuses it is the abuses
that caused the abuses and that happened under bush and the
republicans.
here's an analogy for you.
two friends are taking a road trip and splitting driving duties.
the 1st driver picks the route and after they switch off the 2nd hits
a tree, you are blaming the fist because he picked the road and
absovling the second who crashed.
if you wingnuts keep pushing for candidates who claim government can't
work and when elected they will prove it this is what we get.
It happened on his watch, so FDR gets the credit/blame. As simple as that.
> I saw somewhere
Not a very compelling argument, e.g., "I saw somewhere" that Dubya
refuses to use a knife & fork, so he eats everything with his hands.
> that unemployment steadily increased
> under FDR until the war broke out. At any rate, FDR is always credited

If we'd had a series of Republicon presidents a la Bush43, that might
have happened.
Unemployment when FDR took office: 25%
http://www.cyberessays.com/History/84.htm
Unemployment in 1938: 12.5%

So you heard wrong.
I think Bush is a genius ? When where TF did you get that ?
Boy, you really didn't take to my joke about Sarah Vowell did you ?
LOL Oh dear.
It'll be ok, I don't wanna fight with a Patriots fan.
95-0 vote is hardly partisan. Listen to This American Life GIANT POOL
OF MONEY and ANOTHER SCARY SHOW ABOUT THE ECONOMY episodes. Good
start, then read anything by Warren Buffet or George Soros.
The more I listen to documentaries and read up on this credit housing
crisis etc... the more I reealize there are no experts, and no one
knows what the fuck is going on. The financial wizards create
financial instruments they can't control nor predict their impact.
Hence the 2000 Act that created these OTC credit default swaps. You
can thank Phil Gramm for Enron.
I'm saying between not regulating credit default swaps as commodities
futures contracts and stock options, and abuse at all levels
(Republicans, Democrats (they both get huge money from Wall Street,
it's called hedging your bet), big commercial banks and lenders (the
stories about how they lent money to people without income or assets
is unreal, and sometimess got people to sign complicated variable rate
mortgages they couldn't afford and making money off that, then betting
they would foreclose with credit default swaps and making more money
off that, and some dumb fucks who actually didn't stop to wonder why
they could get a half-million dollar loan without showing an income
stub or tax return or asset disclosure statement) is unreal. Words
fail me.
If you think incompetence and greed and abuse are partisan, I suggest
you join us here in the real world.
Also, this might have partly been largely a systemic failure of global
capitalism, with too much credit chasing speculative investments.
Maybe it will take years to de-leverage the whole economy, and excise
the cancer of excess debt.
The good news is, it looks like we may have learned some lessons from
the 1873 and 1929 crashes, and set up some international coordinating
mechanisms to avoid another Great Depression.
We shall see. We're in uncharted territory as they're all saying.
Perhaps it's time for G7 leaders to meet up at Bretton Woods again
(winter skiing is lovely there in New Hampshire), and
reconfigure a new international financial system.
I agree, but it's not about too much or too little regulation. It's
about what kind ?
Same goes for government and taxes. People are often asking the wrong
questions. It's not about size of government or levels of taxation.
What are we taxing ? What should we want to tax and not ?
Are the programs effective in pursing desired policy goals ? Are they
competently managed ? Are they fiscally sustainable ?
So, governments can at the periphery influence the economy, but on the
whole, Washington is brain dead lately. Most good ideas and innovation
is coming from states, governors, cities, mayors , venture
capitalists, entrepreneurs and university scientific research.
Washington is too busy mounting hyperpartisan army against
hyperpartisan army in trench warfare that gets nothing done or solved.
It's like World War I. Hundreds of thousands of deaths lost for inches
or a few feet of muddy terrain.
