Hi...I'll post as well.
In the book by Catherine Marshall, she marries Neil, whose wife
actually died in childbirth. (Okay, so you don't read about the actual
ceremony, but I'm sure everyone will agree w/ me.)
In the series, the last episode ended where Christy had to choose
between accepting David's proposal or Neil who desperately came riding
up on a horse. In the series, however, there is that nagging little
detail--Neil's wife isn't dead. She was dead, but that was just a
scam, and now she's back after gallavanting around the country.
Check out Caroline Kent's Choices of the Heart continuation of the last
scene of the series for some enjoyable, suspenseful, and utterly
worthwhile reading!

The real life Christy , Leonora Whitaker Wood, the mother of Catherine
Marshall, married the preacher at the mission. In the book, we don't
actually see Christy marry the doctor. Do you suppose that something
happened to the doc, and that's why they didn't end up married? I wish
that one of Marshall's kin would write a biography of Leonora, so we
would know the real story. Or even a television movie. I'd like to
see what happened in real life to Leonora. Why did she marry the
doctor, why did they leave the mountains. What happened to them
after that. If anyone knows of any research already done on the
subject, please let us know.
Hmmm--interesting. I guess I figured that Neil was just a fictional
character made up by Catherine Marshall. I think it was Sherry who was
saying a while ago about the correlation between A Man Called Peter and
Christy--I mean Neil and Peter (who Catherine married).

I can see that it's time to post my FAQ again! In real life, Christy
(aka Leonora Whitaker Wood) married the Rev. John Wood, who was the
minister at the Del Rio mission.
In the book however, it is assumed (Catherine didn't actually say for
sure) that Christy is in love with and will marry Dr. Neil MacNeill.
If the ending chapter is any indication, Christy's feelings are
reciprocated. Catherine wrote the book as faction - that is part
fact, part fiction. That is probably why some folks are a little
confused - they assume that what was played out on the television
series is what happened in real life. That isn't the case.
Hope this helps!

An interesting bit of trivia is that there is a photograph of Leonora
and John Wood, and SFM said that Randall Batinkoff looked like he'd
stepped right out of the photo -- even to the way he hooked his thumbs
in his pockets!

<chuckle... :> I don't think Catherine *needed* to say anything more...

Why do so many people seem to feel that the series must follow the
book *exactly*, page-by-page, step-by-step. Little House On The Prairie
certainly didn't, and was one of the most popular shows for years.

And according to a journalist friend of mine who interviewed LeSourd,
you're right. Neil never existed -- he was a conglomerate character
created to add dramatic tension.
So there are three "correct" answers to the original question:
1) Leonora married the preacher. :)
2) Christy married Neil. (book version)
3) Christy hasn't married. (TV series version)
Hope this helps!

A correction to my previous posting: I meant to say why didn't
Christy marry the doctor. I guess because there wasn't really
any doctor at all. That is interesting!
Now, don't forget that Christy was a work of fiction only loosely
based on her mother's stories that happened while she was a
schoolteacher in the mountains. The character of Dr. MacNeill was a
fictional character created to add conflict to the story. He wasn't
based on anyone Leonora knew but if you read Catherine Marshall's book
about her beloved husband, Peter Marshall, you will find
similarities between him and Neil MacNeill. I believe Catherine
intended her fictional Christy to end up with Dr. MacNeill. As for
what happened to the community, the following is taken from the
prologue of the book Christy:
"Two World Wars had reached deep into the mountains to snatch away
Cutter Gap men. Those who had returned had brought back some of the
outside world.......
On July11, 1936, President Roosevelt had incorporated the towering
scenery of Cutter Gap into the Cherokee National Forest; then on
Sept. 2,1940, the President had personally dedicated 460,000 acres of
the North Carolina--Tennessee Appalachians into the Great Smoky
Mountains National Park. Most of the families who lived in either the
Forest or the Park had--eagerly or reluctantly--sold their small land
holdings to the U.S. Government."
