It sounds more like a return to series development, rather than the DVD
movies that then were broken up into episodes. I would prefer the
former.

Day 127 of the "no grouchy usenet posts" project
Comedy Central resurrects 'Futurama'
New episodes begin airing mid-2010
By Nellie Andreeva
“Futurama” is coming back.
Taking a page from the “Family Guy” resurrection guidebook, the
canceled Fox animated comedy is returning with an order from Comedy
Central for 26 new episodes.
Writers already are working on stories for the new batch of episodes
from the sci-fi cartoon created by Matt Groening and David X. Cohen,
which is slated to premiere on Comedy Central in mid-2010.
Just like with “Family Guy,” the performance of “Futurama’ ”s reruns
on Comedy Central and on DVD prompted its resurrection.
It comes on the heels of the ratings success of four feature-length
original “Futurama” specials on Comedy Central: “Bender's Big Score,”
“The Beast with a Billion Backs,” “Bender's Game” and “Into the Wild
Green Yonder.”
“When we brought back ‘Family Guy’ several years ago, everyone said
that it was a once in a lifetime thing that canceled series stay
canceled and cannot be revived,” said Gary Newman and Dana Walden,
chairmen of 20th TV, which produces “Futurama” and “Family Guy.” “But
‘Futurama’ was another series that fans simply demanded we bring
back.”
"Futurama," which aired on Fox for five seasons (1999 to 2003) centers
on Philip Fry (Billy West), a 25-year-old pizza delivery boy who
accidentally freezes himself on December 31, 1999 and wakes up 1,000
years later with a fresh start at life and a "diverse" new group of
friends including Leela (Katey Sagal), a tough, but lovely one-eyed
alien and Bender (John DiMaggio), a robot who possesses human
characteristics and flaws.
All key voice cast members are expected to return, along with the
series’ core writing team.
Groening and Cohen attributed the show’s return to “some sort of
mysterious time loop.”
Comedy Central acquired the originally produced 72 episodes of
“Futurama” in a deal in January 2008.
“There remains a deep and passionate fan base for this intelligent and
very funny show," said Comedy Central’s senior vp programming David
Bernath.

<fanboy>
Leela is not an alien, she's a mutant.

Spoiler for those who haven't yet gotten to season 3!

Are there actual _fans_ of Family Guy? Not just people who watch it, but
actual fans? Fans as in really, really like it? Thinks that has as much
as one (or more?) original joke per episode type fans?

Why doesn't this person say 'alcoholic'. It's easier that way.
Yes, "Family Guy" does have a large fan base. Just ask anyone who has
attended any Seth McFarland public appearance.

Because saying "alcoholic" leaves out many of Bender's attributes. One
should also say "kleptomaniac", "loafer", "narcissist", etc.

I think it's also been established that Bender requires alcohol (along
with oil) to function.

So basically, Bender is a typical representation of America.
Should have made my point a bit more clear, The reviewer is making it all
sound very PC[1] by downplaying Benders' tendencies.
After all "Human characteristics and flaws" could mean a weakness for
chocolate as opposed to how he has attempted to run an escort service for
robots.

Along with all the other robots in society, they use the alcohol
as fuel. Well established in many episodes, like the Robotology
episode, the global warming episode, and others. One of those
episodes shows Dr. Farnsworth creating the alcohol-fueled robot.
As for human attributes, how about the episode where they had a
"what-if" about turning Bender into a human being, and what
happened to him?

Actually, in "Hell is Other Robots", Bender was off alcohol after
converting to Robotology. He appeared to be able to utilize mineral
instead.

Funny, the preacherbot in the Robot Hell story was also the one
running the alcohol kitchen for down-and-out robots in the first
Santa Claus episode...

Wait a minute, are you trying to say that Futurama isn't completely
consistent in its background story? Sacrilege!
