Amber Benson is NOT fat, and is a Hell of a good actress. Her scenes

In article <39128032...@aracnet.com>,
Hi...I'm new here, as is evidenced by the fact that none of you have ever
seen me around before.
Anyway, I just wanted to add my voice to the loooooooooooong list of Amber
Benson supporters. She is a wonderfully talented and beautiful actress who
has infused Tara with an incredible amount of humanity. Tara could have
been such a cliche, but Amber has made her as real a person as a character
on a TV show can be. I applaud Joss for not only creating this character
and storyline, but for casting an actress with the strength that Amber has.
This strength was clearly evidenced last night when she posted that message
defending herself against the mouthy few who, hidden behind the relative
anonimty of the internet, feel the need to puff themselves up by making
someone else feel bad about themself. And why choose Amber? Simply because
she doesn't fit the fashion and entertainment world's warped view of how
women should look. It's a wonderfully rare thing nowadays to see a women on
television who is actually built like a woman, and not a 14 year old boy.
Amber has curves and is proud of them, which is great (I love a woman with
curves). It took a LOT of guts for her to stand up for herself the way she
did. She could have easily just tried to ignore it all and pretend it
didn't hurt, but she let people know she was hurt, and wasn't going to sit
idly by why a few narrow minded morons got their jollies by attacking her
on a personal level. Bravo!
Anyhoo...that's my 2 cents worth. Although I did think it was mean of her
to taunt everyone about how cool the finale is going to be when we have to
wait 4 weeks for it - lol
> Anyhoo...that's my 2 cents worth. Although I did think it was mean of her

Think of it this way -- it was Amber's way of getting back at the people who
were making all those nasty remarks.
>She seemed more upset
> about the questions and remarks about her weight than about the
> storyline.
That's a damn shame...she's not fat at all, and what if she was? She's
still an attractive woman. Maybe after watching Ms. Gellar starve
herself to death these last 3 years, people have forgotten what a real
woman looks like..

: Amber Benson is NOT fat, and is a Hell of a good actress. Her scenes
: really capture the essence of the type of role Tara is.
I really like Tara and Amber's portrayal of her. She seems like
the kind of girl I'd fall for and might even have a chance with.
Well, except for the lesbian thing...
But who the hell has been saying she's fat?! I guess I totally
missed those posts. Are these people morons?
Pete
Second, Amber is looking a lot slimmer now than she did. That's fine, she
looks lovely, but at 118 pounds she should stay where she is. :) I sure hope
she doesn't go the route of some actresses and starve herself to gain approval
(I doubt she will, based on her posts).
Third, show business is brutal. It eats up sensitive people and spits them
out. If she wants to survive, she has to develop a thicker skin. I'm not
saying that to chastise her...I'd probably become clinically depressed if I
read people saying stuff like that about me. But I like her and I don't want
to see her spirit broken...so she's needs to toughen up or find a less public
profession, do stage work, etc. I hope that came out right... again, I am not
criticizing Amber, I am saying this because unfortunately, it's true. If she
gets a big movie role and becomes famous, what she's reading on the PB is
nothing compared to the treatment she'll get from the National Enquirer.
I hope she can take a cue from Kate Winslet, who told the "you're too fat"
crowd to take a flying leap.
FWIW I think Amber Benson is a good weight and has a lovely, lovely face. IMO
Willow gets the better end of the deal. ;)

Sounds like more fallout from the media's silly anorexia thing against
SMG. Some people latch on to that and post ever-so-intensely about
SMG's body wait, and next thing you know, the topic of the day is
"skinny and fat".
Too bad. I wish people would learn to have some skepticism of the
mass media. My suggestion is, give the mainstream media the
skepticism you think is due the tabloids. (and give the tabloids the
skepticism you think is due random words on a ouija board.)

Preach it brother! I'm one of the scribblers in the
much-hated mass media (hey, maybe Buffy should have been dating
the mass media, and not Riley!)
Anyone who isn't skeptical about what appears in their newspaper,
on TV, or on the radio, even stuff that's been fully vetted by
editors and reporters, is a fool.
And the obsession about Gellar has become pathetic, beyond
pathetic, even. Check out the pix of Gellar and Prinze Jr. She's
petite but she's not Flockhart scrawny. Far from it.
BTW, you're 100 % wrong about the mainstream news outlets'
standards being as low as tabloids. But when it comes to complete
veracity, the mass media are almost as many light years from
the unvarnished truth as you can get and still be in the same

Well, I don't know what exactly was being posted on those message boards,
but most of the posts I have seen here criticizing Tara (aside from the gay
issue) have been more about her demeanor/personality than anything else,
which is a criticism of the character and not the actor. As for the whole
weight issue, not everyone who is thin has an eating disorder.
All in all I think her post was pretty whiny. If she wants to have a career
as an actress I think she going to need to grow a thicker skin. Because
there will always be criticism; even was the stereotype Hollywood beauty
types have to endure all kinds of criticism. She certainly shouldn't be
reading internet message boards where the anonymous nature of the medium
causes many people to behave even worse than normally.

Whoa, that's reading way too much into it. Think of this scene:
Kai: (Icicles dripping from every word) What's this you wrote on the
posting board about Amber Benson's body, *Joseph*?
See his point now?
This is just the sort of post I was complaining about.
SMG has said that she is fine. From TV Guide:
"I've always been a skinny little thing. Yes, I did at one
point have a little baby fat and I did lose that. But I'm a
5-foot 2 tiny-boned person. My mother is a tiny-boned
person. I work like a dog on the show. Maybe some actresses
do have anorexia, but I certainly don't."
I'm going to bind a command to insert that message automatically,
because people just keep repeating the SMG-anorexia rumor over and
over.

Agreed. SMG is fine, she's on the thin side, but she looks good. My
only caveat would be that it's difficult to "sell" yourself as an
action hero if you get *too* thin. Compare SMG to other female action
heroes like Lucy Lawless, Renee O'Connor, and Vicki Pratt (from
Cleo2525), and you see what I mean. Even with slayer-enhanced
strength, you've still got to look like you've got some muscle to back
up that punch.
As others have said, anyone in this business has to have a thick skin.
The minute they appear on the screen, there will be critics about EVERY
aspect of their appearance, dress, demenaor, and artistic performance.
Further, opinions on the Internet (posting boards and Usenet) are not at
all representative of public opinion or anything authoritative; and
should never be taken seriously. (The same applies to Joss' posting
his response to the lesbian "complaints".)
Undoubtedly there are a few viewers out there who think Benson is fat.
And a few who think she's skinny. And a few who object to the
Tara/Willow thing; just like there's a few who object to the way the US
military is portrayed. The key point is "a FEW".

I think you're right and if Sarah had looked like she does now back when
they were casting Buffy, she probably wouldn't have gotten the role. I
still think she looks great, but I have to agree she doesn't "look" like

Also, the way that would be said to someone auditioning for a part
(Producer: "Well Miss Benson, we just don't think you are quite right for
this part. We were thinking of someone who was a little more... petite. No
hard feelings...") and how such things are usually said on usenet (Inane
Poster: "Hey, [insert actor or actress here] is *BUTT* ugly! He/She looks
like a horse! HA HA HA HA HA HA.") is quite different.
Frankly, I'm awestruck that *any* actor would be naive enough to read
posts on usenet or bulletin board themselves! I thought they had all been
warned long ago that reading such posts wouldn't be worth their time
because of the high incidence of stupid posters and the likely volume of
vicious personal attacks that are often found online.
If I was advising a celebrity, I'd tell them to get a personal assistant
to read the stuff, and then have them only bring to the celebrity the
posts that were either complimentary or at least rational (non-personal)
criticism.

They probably only read these things on a whim if at all so I can't see
anyone actually hiring a personal assistant to filter them.

Any person who wants to get anywhere in life has to develop a thick skin
and let insults roll off "like water off a duck's back". This is not
to justify insults or rude behavior, but to recognize it is part of life.
Any person in the public eye, from being a coach on their local soccer
term to being a politician or actor, is gonna get criticized. Any
manager over people in a company will get criticized. If any of these
people are to function at all, they can't let unfair criticism bother them.

Internet postings are not representative of anything.
Plenty of people still write conventional mail, and undoubtedly Benson's
mailbag will have plenty of strange, even creepy letters. Renee O'Connor
(Xena's Gabrielle) said she gets lots of mail from prison inmates
for some reason.
And once an actor is well known enough, people will stop him/her on
the street and express their opinion. Most will be complimentary, but
some will be nasty.

Yeah, my former boss's wife worked as a stylist at Universal Studios for
a while when they were doing a Sly movie several years back. At 5'10"
(she's a model) she almost towered over him.
Personally, if I was an actor who was a cast member of a (internet
popular) TV show, I think I'd have a PA keep up with the show's newsgroup,
and bring me anything I thought was relevant. But that's me...
I repeat. I am now disillusioned. I knew how tall -- not -- the
adopted Aussies mentioned were, but I thought Sly was tall. He's
barely average height. Piffle.
Sigh,

Oy vey. The people with power where I work let *Fair* criticism bother them,
let alone unfair criticism.
Yes, one needs to develope a thick skin if one can, but from what I see, most
people never cease to be bothered somewhat by criticism.

Actually, I find it quite refreshing to see a young woman of 'normal'
proportions on a popular TV show. While watching Buffy last night, I
found myself thinking, while Willow and Tara were shown in profile,
facing each other "Hey, Willow has no breasts!". Now doubtless she
does, but it's sure not obvious....
If anything is making Tara look unattractive on the show, it's the
sad-sack expression she wears so much and that gosh-awful wardrobe.
The clothes look like exactly the sort of thing many girls and young
women wear to disguise their shape...whether too thin, or heavy or
just 'unsure'. Maybe we're going to see Tara blossom a bit now that
she's in a romantic relationship?

In the past, interacting with the fans, or the public at large, was
not particularly easy. Today, the Internet makes it easy and safe for
anyone to express an opinion or respond to the complaints of others. I
suspect that the current generation of young actors who have grown up
in the digital age are much more inclined to interact with the public
online than any previous generation of actors.
I think you'll see more and more of this in the future, from both
actors and writer/producers like Joss and JMS. Someone like Joss can
directly express his opinions without anyone editing his words, and he
doesn't have to wait for a magazine to conduct an interview for his
thoughts and opinions to be read. For anyone inclined to interact with
the fanbase, the Internet presents a Brave New World of unheard-of
interactive possibilities.
>Further, opinions on the Internet (posting boards and Usenet) are not at
>all representative of public opinion or anything authoritative; and
>should never be taken seriously. (The same applies to Joss' posting
>his response to the lesbian "complaints".)
This is becoming less and less true every day though. The Internet
has gained enough critical mass and momentum that it can no longer be
regarded as merely a refuge for the lunatic fringe. At this point, I'm
not sure _what_ it represents, but it sure seems to represent the
thoughts and feelings of an awful LOT of people now.

I hope that consoles her in times like this. Even the most adored
celebrities have their share of people who loathe them. To highly
sensitive people, it isn't about the numbers, but the viciousness of
their words and the depth of their hatred or disdain.
It is probably quite shocking to anyone with a sweet demeanor (like
Amber) to learn that _anyone_ hates you or disapproves of you. Sure,
show biz is brutal this way, but many young actors, depending on their
background, won't know this going in and will have to learn it the
hard way.

Actually, another key point is you have no way to *know* if the
correct valuation for any of these claims is "a few." And just as
importantly, you may have trouble being able to *show* that any
of these claims are correct.

Heard a story about Tony Danza - he was in a play of some sort, and was handing
out free tickets for it. Someone (who I know) was in the area, and kept hearing
the line "Hi, I'm Tony Danza, I'm in this play - wold you like a ticket?"
So the guy I know gets targeted next. The conversation goes about so:
"Hi, I'm Tony Danza. Would you like a ticket to my show?"
"You're Tony Danza? You know, your show sucked!"
"So, you don't want a ticket, then?"
Assuming this story is true, then Bravo to TD for coming back like that.
Totally irrelevant, but moderatly amusing, at least to me...
