Buffy first meets Angel in the first episode _Welcome to the Hellmouth_

She doesn't know he's a vampire at first. He's just this mysterious
stranger who shows up every once in a while to give her a cryptic
warning about some impending disaster. Naturally she develops the hots
for him. She doesn't learn he's a vampire until several episodes
later.

Both episodes are available on tape at better rental places, or you can
buy them through Amazon or any one of a number of other outfits.

It was shown in flashbacks in season 2 that Angel first saw Buffy the
day she found out she was the Slayer, in LA in 1996. Buffy first met
Angel outside the Bronze just after she moved to Sunnydale in 1997 (in
the first episode of the show, Welcome to the Hellmouth).
He showed up in that long swirling coat, brooding, king of pain way
that the girls dig, and made mysterious pronouncements. When she
asked who he was, he said 'a friend'. She told him she didn't need a
friend, and he said 'I didn't say, your friend'.
(Actually, he wasn't wearing a trench coat or duster in that scene but
a leather jacket, which he ended up giving to Buffy, and which she
wore on and off through the first half of season 2)
She didn't find out he was a vampire until episode 7 ("Angel").

I'm sure someone else will jump in with this as well but he wasn't wearing
either a duster or the leather jacket - he was in a very Gucci velvet jacket
and white shirt, and rather than 'king of pain' he was being a bit of a smug
git - hence Buffy calling him 'annoying'. It seems that the character Amgel
as to become had not yet being formalised, and IIRC David Boranaz had only
been very recently cast, and in the first meeting between Buffy & Angel,
ANgel is quite different to the vamp we later come to know and adore.
