Okay, in Buffy's dream in "Restless," Tara shows what seems like a Tarot
card to Buffy, who says she won't need that. Which prompts Tara's
osomysterious "You think you know. What you are. Who you'll become. You
haven't even begun."

But...I've never heard of a Tarot card called "The Hands." Have any of
you?

Interestingly, all the other people dreaming already had Tarot cards
assigned to them in the previous episode. Willow was "Spirit" (which
was attacked in her dream), Xander "Heart" (ditto) and Giles "Mind"
(ditto again). So Buffy is "The Hands?" Makes sense. She's the one
who does the actual fighting after all.

There were two hands. Deuces in the Tarot Lower Arcana (Cups, Wands,
Swords, Pentacles) represent perfect balances, of Emotion, Creativity,
Ambition or Practicality. What might two hands represents?

Keep in mind one other detail. These hands were reversed, i.e. upside
down.

Personally I think this heralds Buffy's central conflict in the coming
year--to face what it means to *be* the Slayer--whatever that really
is...

Comments?

I don't know anything about Tarot cards; are there actual cards for
Spirit, Mind, and Heart?

Yes. But one's hands are always guided by heart, mind, and spirit; I'm
wondering if Buffy is just the most visible part of a larger union.

Maybe something, maybe nothing; we don't know what Joss knows about
Tarot.
Seeking balance in her life has always been one of Buffy's goals,
however. Balance between being the Slayer and living a normal life, between
being a good person and being a killer, etc.

I couldn't agree more. I think Buffy will go beyond what other Slayers
have achieved, and maybe find a way to live past 25.

I own a variety of Tarot decks and none of the ones I have show the picture
used on the Manus Card in the episode. The closest image I could find was
one on the Ace of Wands, which has a hand on a wand, and the Ace of Swords,
which has a hand holding a sword. It looks like the two hands were "cut"
and composited onto the Manus card.

Agreed. I would rather them have used the Strength card for Buffy instead.
And, with the introduction of the first Slayer (the beast within) the
Strength card made much more sense, both literally and figuratively. Buffy
battles with and eventually controls the beast within, in this case, the
primordial Slayer.

Hands can mean just about anything when it comes to symbolism. What I got
from it, though, was the hands were symbolic of instruments. The use of two
hands would show complete Mastery in unarmed battle.

> Keep in mind one other detail. These hands were reversed, i.e. upside

Hmm...good point. This would then mean that the instruments would not
necessarily be expressed in an outer situation (ie. the "real world") but
would be expressed in an inner situation (ie. a dream, something on a
subconcious level).

I think she pretty much so understands the impact of her being the Slayer.
I took this to mean that she's going to figure out that she's capable of
much more than she realizes.

Thanks for listening.

We'll send her cheesy boyfriends,
The worst we can find.
She'll have to stand and club them all,
And knock them on their behind!

Now Buff will have to stake them all,
Cause the vampires have no end.
She'll try to keep her sanity,
With the help of her Slayer friends!

I always felt early on that the Slayer's role was more than just slaying
vampires. If the Slayer survives to a certain age, then maybe it's
prophesized that this means a great war between Humans and Demons will
finally erupt. The Slayer, thus, is in charge of leading humanity in ths
war (think of a Joan of Arc archetype). Sounds like a plausible premise for
a feature film.

I think the Slayer channels the sum total supernatural mana of mankind, that
essence that mortal animal relinquished so as not to have to be demonic,
making the Slayer effectively the avatar for the demon essence of all
mankind. The phrase "more human than human", or perhaps 'meta-human' may
be an appropriate description.

I was thinking of something like legions of lord demons erupting from the
hellmouth, and the Slayers are artificially flatlined and resuscitated over
and over again, raising an army of Slayers for one *huge* climactic battle.

Sounds like a cheezy plot for a movie? Remember, Darth Whedon can pull
implausible sounding stories out of his ass and create jewels.

Consider this description:

"After an intense final battle, the gang gathers for a movie night, only to
have some supernatural entity of unknown origin try to Freddy them as they
sleep; dream sequence episode."

That description may sound kinda lame, but it's a bastard summary of
'Restless', which was absolutely *masterful.* Q.E.D.
