IMO...there are alot of people who actually prefer the girl-next-door type to
the pin-up type. You have to remember that everyone has different tastes, and
just because SMG headlines the show doesn't mean everyone automatically likes
her. I think SMG & AH are equal in the talent department, and while SMG has a
more polished look, AH is also an attractive female.

That was just harsh, man. But again, you are entitled to you own opinion.
And I really really hope this will post right because lately my post have been
coming out screwy.

Could it be that because you think she's ugly you're opinions
of her acting ability is biased? I'm no fan of Willow, but I think
Alison does a good job. And what's wrong with being a nerd?

This statement angered me, but this is a flame free post.
As for Sarah, she's a great actress, her character
>is the most important, and she's a bomb shell.
Followed by this statement it seems as if what's more important to you is how
an actor looks as opposed to how an actor acts, or the sort of character they
play. I admit that Willow has become my favorite character of the show. Why,
you ask? Willow *isn't* a bombshell. Willow's not a dimwitted, sexy character.
(And I'm NOT saying that BUFFY is)- So many television shows feature these
knockout women who are either so slick & self-confident or a total bimbo. I
know almost no one like that. Willow, I know. I've had friends who were like
Willow- she's shy & awkward & smart & unsure of herself and to me that's
something that's a hell of a lot more realistic than the majority of female
characters on television. I think Alyson's a great actress, and to be honest, I
wasn't struck by her at all on first viewing. She's grown on me, but she's
grown in high leaps & bounds. *shrug* so that's just my opinion. Think of it as
"Why I Love Willow/Alyson Hannigan So Damn Much".
oh & for the record- while she doesn't fit into the category most people would
consider beautiful, she's certainly a maginificent looking creature who's not
lacking in charm nor grace.

And they are beautiful. They just don't know it so they don't wear the
'sexy' clothes or the makeup that would enhance their beauty. I know tons
of people like that who are very self consious.

She is very beautiful. A personality can do so much for a person, it can
make them ugly or beautiful to someone.. Alyson has such a loving
beautiful personality that it enhances all the outside beauty she has.
I also had a friend who was an Extra on the show and he said he never
saw Willow as the beautiful type but he saw Alyson as she was leaving the
set and he was like "Hello nurse, who is that?" She wasn't dressed in
Willow clothes and he found her the most beautiful creature ever.
Clothes do a lot for someone. But I think what really matters is the
personality which Alyson and Willow both have!

The show has gone to extremes to hide Alyson within Willow. Joss helps pick
out what she wears to interviews so as to keep Willow front and center. Even
the outfit in Halloween is designed not to show off to much.

I don't imagine "Willow the Vampire Slayer". That is not her role nor
destiny. Willow is Buffy's friend and support, and does an excellent
job of that. She is also an excellent researcher and information
resource, vital to Buffy's success.

Alyson does an excellent job. I've seen her in other things. She
is playing a part of a shy, quiet girl, caught up in the vampire slaying
biz.
As to her appearance, well, I think she is utterly adorable. She and
Buffy each have their own type of beauty.
I think someone need prunes!

Though personally if they ever did a parallel universe where Willow and
Buffy's roles were reversed, I might like to see Willow as the assertive,
up-front slayer-type.
you might agree with me that she can be quite a knockout. I was
using it as my wallpaper background for a while.

Not only is Alyson Hannigan (you could at least do her the courtesy of
getting her name right) a marvelously talented actress, building a
multidimensional character with both broad strokes and subtle nuances,
she is, simply, THE cutest thing on two feet. :) :) :) :) :)
You've got to remember: These kids are in high school. There are very
few things in these people's lives that they actually have any control
over. Buffy, especially. She not only has the day to day trauma of
puberty, peer pressure, and a new school, Buffy has to deal with being
the slayer.
Willow is someone that Buffy can explain things to. She allows Buffy
the luxury of feeling in control. As Buffy rationalizes things to
Willow, she is able to rationalize to herself. Willow is also someone
that Buffy "takes care of". She can be in control of a situation, by
giving Willow and Xander instructions, that for the most part, they will
follow without question or hesitation.
Just my two cents.

I find Alison Hanning a mediocre actress at best. The character is
basically a nerd. The actress isn't at all attractive, actually I find
her exactly the opposite, really ugly.
As for Sarah, she's a great actress, her character is the most
important, and she's a bomb shell.
People like Willow BECAUSE of everything you said. People like
characters that they identify with, and there are many more Willows in
the world than there are Buffys. Even people who look like prom queen
material (standard, not offbeat good looks) tend to FEEL like Willow
inside, especially in high school. I know that I wasn't shy like
Willow in high school, but when I watch the show, I always feel like
she is the one who is like I was back then. I think viewers are also
encouraged to see the story through Willow's eyes to some extent --
like Willow, we are just regular people, of above average
intelligence, (proved by our good taste in liking the show :}) who
watch the story unfold, caring about the other characters and trying
to figure the whole thing out.
SMG is more of a "bombshell", a Baywatch-style beauty that appeals to
a vast chunk of the population. I don't think anyone would say she's
not a pretty young woman. It's just that a lot of people are more
drawn to more quirky good looks, because that very quirkiness conveys
more personality and is more endearing.
As far as Willow being the slayer, I don't think anyone really thinks
that she and SMG are miscast -- I think it was just tossed out as a
thought for one crazy, "alternate-universe" episode, kind of like
Halloween, when Buffy kept fainting and Xander was Mr. Armageddon.
Anyway, that is my theory about why most of us like Willow so much.
We have refined taste, that's all. :}

I agree. It is much more difficult to play a nerd when one
isn't a nerd! IMO she does a great job. Her burst outs, of emotion,
are perfectly timed!! Like when she blew up at Sarah's watcher and her
Vamp Boyfeind for being inconsiderate.. If you look at film history,
you'll see that roles like hers are hard to play. Judy Holiday was the
perfect dumb blond many years ago. She also belonged to the Mensa
Society!! Rated an IQ around 160!!
IMHO it is more the character that she plays than herself that
gives the weakness to her. There have been several dangling plots
around the character that hopefully will be fulfilled soon. Then maybe
she will be able to show her metal.

Man, you have a very narrow view of beauty. Do only Bay Watch Beauty
types turn your head? Alison Hanning is anything but ugly! I think she
is quite cute! She's no beauty queen nor is she a great actress, but
she is DAMN CUTE!

Her Eyes and Mouth are quite nice. Very expressive eyes and a
thin mouth, unlike most in hollywood that go in for plastic surgery to
fatten their lips. I think people are critical for a lack of knowledge
of her through dialog. Its true that she doesn't say much, but that is
the role she has! It is difficult without much dialog to be "deep".
Buffy and Xander are always "yammering" and "running on", as they say.
I would like to see more character star episodes, like in Star
Trek. What I mean by that is, in Star Trek, they select one of the
primary cast members to "be the star" or "principal" for a show. The
Holloween and Werewolf episodes were almost Willow principal episodes.
Make a show or two where everything depends on Willow's actions.
Yep, still trying to catch up, I am...
In any case, I'm not sure I agree with this. Not that Willow is not a
more believable character, because she is, but that I don't think
that's a matter of believability.
My point is -- The Slayer is supposed to be a semi-mythic character.
She isn't *supposed* to be believable. Willow, on the other hand, is
not a mythic figure - just a regular person. And so she's not written
as over-the-top as Buffy is.
If Buffy were not The Slayer, I think the two characters would be
equally believable. If I were picking people to be my friends, I'd
probably choose either or both (though the character Willow has more
in common with me than the character Buffy does).
Thanks,
Joel N. Fischoff
