I'm curiious about something.

i just got back from seeing The Averngers (I loved it.)

But i'm wonderiing why this movie made $200 million domestically
the first weekend with no advertising whle Dark Shadows made
a fraction of with a lot of advertising. I knwo the ads for
Dark Shadows sucked but why was the Avengers successful
with no ads at all.

(If there were ads run I didn't see any of them. On the other
a hand I saw a ton of ads for Dark Shadows.)

So why was the Avengers so successful?

There were 5 ads for The Avengers:

Iron Man
The Incredible Hulk
Iron Man 2
Thor
Captain America: The First Avenger

How many people actually remember the Dark Shadows TV show?

I remember the remake starring Roy Thinnes. It was awful. Thinnes should have stayed with Law & Order !

The first two ad were in cinemas in 2008, the third in 2010, the last
two 2011.

Lots of people saw them. I'm surprised you didn't.

I don't know where you live, but I saw Avengers ads (both print and
tv) all over the place for weeks leading up to the release.

While marketing plays a role, AVENGERS was also a very good movie. DS
didn't look very good, not have I heard much positive about it. It
looked the same damn movie Tim Burton has been made several times
already (Edward Scissorhands, Willy Wonka, Alice In Wonderland. etc).
Lots of weird, garish costumes and scenery and Johnny Depp in some
sort of whiteface. People are probably getting tired of it. I know
I am. I liked this movie when it was called ED WOOD but haven't given
a damn since.

In other words, the films WERE the ads for Avengers.

I think the world is getting sick of Johnny Depp playing the same
stupid character in every movie he does.
