The tell is probably in the birth dates of his siblings. A birth date of
1962 would fit right in.

And this is from the State of California Vital Records (which were
online until last December). These are *all* the 'James Marsters' who
were born in California in the 20th century.

Last_Name First Middle B_yr mo dy Mothers_Last_Name Sex County
MARSTERS JAMES C 1957 07 20 DORSEY MALE LOS ANGELES
MARSTERS JAMES W 1962 08 20 RAYMOND MALE PLUMAS
MARSTERS JAMES WILLIAM 1935 05 22 WAHL MALE SISKIYOU

(Note that Greenville is in Plumas County)

Strangely, I tend to believe the State of California over E! Online.

More fun. Check out his various online bios. If he was born in 1971,
then he was appearing in The Tempest in Chicago when he was 14 and
founded the Genesis Theatre Company in Chicago when he was 16 (this
was after attending the Pacific Conservatory and Julliard, of course).

I lived near Julliard, used their library, attended concerts at
Lincoln Center, did things I'm not proud of in the complex (and in
Avery Fisher Hall), etc. I'm not buying that James Marsters was a
theatre student at Julliard at 16.

It could happen and I could be the Queen of France. :)

What I don't get is why it matters so much to so many people!
I mean- this topic comes up about once every two months, with all kinds of
sources cited.
Who really cares how old he is?

Charisma Carpenter has the wrong birthdate listed in most of her bios and
nobody says anything about that. Why the double standard?

My thoughts exactly. I ugess some teen's aren't comfortable having
lusted after an "really" old guy. I think the reaction is something
like: "ewwww.. he can't be older than my parents!"

If you replaced 'JM' with 'Spike' I'm sure the actor would feel
better. I'm assuming there's a 'never' missing between 'I've' and
'understood' too?
And it's a classic, YMMV situation. I could describe the attraction
Spike has for me physically and emotionally in great detail but if
he doesn't tickle your taste buds, it'll just be unconvincing words.

But there are many Spike fans out there and in here and I don't
think the bathroom scene diminished their numbers significantly. It
didn't put me off at all.

Well, drool-ability is in the eye of the beholder. He's certainly not
ugly. Also please keep in mind that JM was merely acting during the
rape scene--he himself hasn't actually raped, or attempted to rape,
anyone (as far as we know, of course...)
This brings to mind a conversation I had with a woman in my office about
the show The West Wing. She told me she doesn't like to watch Martin
Sheen as an actor because of his "kooky political views" I asked her
what that had to do with his acting, and she had no answer for me...

YMMV; Your mileage may vary. Means that one man's meat is another
man's poison sort of thing. Something to do with ads for cars where
they use this phrase to cover themselves as what they say the car
will do to the gallon isn't necessarily what every customer will
get, as driving habits vary so much.
The bathroom scene was disturbing, intentionally so, but in context
it was grey not black and white.
My honest opinion of that scene between those characters, emphasis
on 'characters', was that it was symptomatic of the way the writers
swung back and forth in dealing with Spike and Buffy's relationship
and break up. Confused messages, muddy rationalisation and
inexplicable actions. So it doesn't bother me that much. Unless you
mean that the poor plotting was disgusting. In which case I'll say
that I can see how Spike got to that point but it wasn't the only
way it could have gone, based on what he'd said and done before.

And it doesn't seem to have bothered Buffy over much either. She
doesn't hate Spike, she doesn't blame him, or want him dusted, she
still trusts him to take care of Dawn. Which is pretty incredible
considering the way she's misinterpreted and misunderstood him most
of the season - she picks a funny time to be empathy girl but there
you go. That's Buffy for you.

Although... if he hadn't been soft Spike for a couple of seasons prior, we

I've been lurking this site and several other Bufy sites for the last
3 months and I'm always amazed and amused at how threads debating JM's
age just keep reappearing. The man is 39. He's admitted it in several
interviews, the most recent of which is a USAToday Weekend article
sometime in February. A poster at one of the other Buffy sites I
frequent posted a link to the article. Fellow posters would follow the
link to the article, read it and come back and say, "No, he is so not
39." Believe it, he's 39. And being 39 is not a bad thing.

I should know. I'm 40.

The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is a
constitutional monarchy (thus that kingdom business). Therefore, it
cannot be a republic.

The Fifth Republic (not to be confused with France's Second, Third, or
Fourth Republics, Vichy [shhhh], the Empire or the Second Empire, much
less the Old Regine, the Bourbon restoration, or the Orleanist
monarchy) is in fact a republic. No monarch. No Queen.

I am not the Queen of France.

Not necessarily :-) I agree with your conclusion, but not how you got
there. Before knowing about the "mystery" of JM's d.o.b. I had him
pegged as being of an age with my older sibs (born in '62, '63, and
'64). It was a bit of a surprise when I heard he was reputed to be
closer to my age (I was born in '70), and I thought, "Too much sun and
smokes aged him before his time."

Far more suggestive than the lines in his forehead: the man dated
himself when, at some con or other, he referred to himself as a "dork".
That's what my sister calls me. If he were my age, he'd be more likely
to call himself a "geek" (as I do).

what was actually shown onscreen.
- He lost control and tried to rape her.
- She kicked him across the room.
- He came to his senses and was horrified
at what he'd been about to do.

If he didn't try to rape her, there would not have been allt he flashbacks

I think most people agree that he did not actually rape her (and I
don't think Buffy would have been so amazingly understanding about
it if he had).
Attempted to? From our POV as watchers, yes, from inside his head,
no, not while he was doing it. For Buffy? Yes.
Spike thought he was doing something to make Buffy feel alive,
thought that now the secret was out she could openly enjoy what they
had shared, thought that if she could just let him try one more
time, she'd be convinced...all wrong of course and pitifully blind
to the reality of the situation.
The guilt came afterwards because Spike was sorry for his actions
and rightly so....but the actions themselves were not inspired by
evil IMO. He was just crippled by tunnel vision.I don't think for a
minute that he thought what he was doing was rape until that kick
jolted him into awareness. Doesn't excuse him but it's a whole
different thing than a deliberate, planned rape.
Parker's seduction disgusted me more and yet technically that was
all above board and consensual.

Whats the big deal? Its not like he's Luke Perry, 39 and trying to play a
teenager. I mean, isn't his character supposed to be some 150 years old?

Not necessarily, again...I'm just a couple years older than him, and I
remember being called a *dork* in high school. Odds are, his siblings
called him that at some point, which seems far more likely even than
getting it from his peers...Anyway, my nearly-two-years-younger sister
called me a dork, on occasion. Epithets like that stick around awhile.

Snarky, geek/dork/nerd/dweeb par excellence, but no longer looking it;-{)}

In all, yes -- including his life prior to being turned.

Snarky, still wishing that ME hadn't decided to directly contradict "School
Hard" (using the same character's words, yet)
