TWO TO GO

Prologue

1 EXT. SUNNYDALE FOREST- NIGHT 1

BUFFY, XANDER and ANYA run through the forest, desperate to get back to
Sunnydale in time to stop Willow from harming Jonathan and Andrew.

Xander stops and leans against a tree, panting.

XANDER
I think I'm gonna be sick.

ANYA
Again?

BUFFY
Xander, we don't have time.

XANDER
I know, it's just... what happened back there. The sounds of it. The
smell.

BUFFY
I know.

XANDER
Willow did that.

BUFFY
That's why we have to keep moving. You heard what she said. "One down."

ANYA
She was talking about "two to go", right? Jonathan and
what's-his-face... the other guy.

BUFFY
Andrew. They're sitting at county jail without a clue Willow's coming.

XANDER
You don't think she's gonna kill them, too? She wouldn't. Doesn't make
sense.

BUFFY
Willow's got an addictive personality. She just tasted blood. She could
be there already.

ANYA
No, she couldn't. A witch at her level? She could only go airborne. It's
a thing- more flashy, impresses the locals- but it does take longer.

XANDER
Longer than what?

ANYA
Teleporting.

Anya disappears, leaving only a ripple in the air.

XANDER
Right! Vengeance demon. (to Buffy) Well, at least she'll get there first.

BUFFY
I'm counting the ways that can go wrong.

XANDER
Well, Anya can handle herself.

BUFFY
Against Willow? Tonight? Don't be so sure.

XANDER
Well, she should be coming down at some point, shouldn't she? I mean,
back there, she was out of her head, running on grief and magicks.

BUFFY
Doesn't matter. Willow just killed someone. Killing people changes you.
Believe me, I know.

XANDER
Warren was a cold-blooded killer of women just warming up. If you ask
me, the bastard had it coming to him.

BUFFY
Maybe. Andrew and Jonathan don't.

XANDER
This is still Willow we're dealing with, right?

BUFFY
I hope so. Whatever she's going through, we have to stop her. Maybe we
can actually do that if we can get to your...

They come upon Xander's smashed and wrecked car.

BUFFY
...car.

XANDER
Willow.

BUFFY
I guess she wants to finish the job without us tagging along. Meet me at
the jail.

XANDER
Sure. How're you gonna...

Buffy vaults the wrecked car and sprints off into the night. A second
later, she's gone.

XANDER
Okay, then! I'll just catch up. She's only my best friend, you know. No
big deal, just...

He slams his fist down on the car's hood.

XANDER
...glad I could help.

Opening credit sequence.

ACT I

2 INT. SUNNYDALE POLICE DEPARTMENT- CELL BLOCK- NIGHT 2

ANDREW and JONATHAN sit in their cell, morosely watching the trustees
mop the floors. Andrew has his wrist to his ear.

ANDREW
Dude, move like a foot to your left.

JONATHAN
What for?

ANDREW
I'm trying to hear something.

JONATHAN
Like what?

ANDREW
Signals.

JONATHAN
Oh, for crying out loud. Signals? Who from? Your probe-happy alien
friends? Say... maybe we can trade a pack of cigarettes in for tinfoil.
Make you a nice little antenna hat.

ANDREW
Laugh it up, fuzzball. I figured it out. Warren never abandoned us.
Well, not me, anyway. This is like his test. If we can figure out how
he's communicating with us, then we'll be, you know, worthy.

JONATHAN
You're checking for implants?

ANDREW
Lex Luthor had a false epidermis escape kit in Superman vs. the Amazing
Spider-Man, Treasury Edition.

JONATHAN
Okay, first of all, those were sonic disruptors. Second of all, you are
sadness personified. Waiting for Warren? Yeah, maybe he'll come bust us
out of here on Santa's magic sleigh.

ANDREW
I'm telling him you said that!

JONATHAN
Why wait? Tell him right now. (into Andrews elbow) Hey, Warren, do you
read me? Your girlfriend's pathetic. Over.

ANDREW
Shut up, Jerkathan! You see this? This is why we get jet packs and all
you get is left behind.

JONATHAN
So you admit it.

ANDREW
Why not? You were out of the Trio a long time ago in a galaxy far, far
away. And you want to know why, little feller? No respect for the chain
of command.

JONATHAN
Yeah, see how far it's gotten you? Checking every hole in your sad
little body for transmitters that don't exist.

ANDREW
Oh, I'll find it if I have to check every hole in my body and yours!

Andrew pushes Jonathan and they start grappling with each other.

JONATHAN
Get off!

ANDREW
Make me!

Anya suddenly materializes in the cell with them.

ANYA
There you two are.

ANDREW
(to Jonathan)
You do that?

Jonathan shakes his head no.

ANYA
Listen to me. We have to get you out of here or you'll both be killed.
Guard!

JONATHAN
What's going on?

ANYA
Guard!

ANDREW
Stop that! (to Jonathan) I don't trust her. Do you trust her? This is
major uncool.

JONATHAN
Anya? You're going to have to break this down for us a little.

ANYA
Warren shot Buffy. Warren shot Tara. Buffy's alive. Tara's dead. Willow
found out and being the most powerful Wicca in the western hemisphere,
decided to get the payback... with interest.

ANDREW
What about Warren?

ANYA
She killed him. Ripped him apart and bloodied up the forest doing it.
Now she's coming here and the two of you are next.

ANDREW
Oh, my god... Warren.

JONATHAN
Oh, my god... me. Guard! Guard!

ANDREW
We didn't do anything.

The GUARD gets up from his desk and walks down the hall to the cell.

GUARD
All right, all right. What do you- (sees Anya) Who the hell are you?

ANYA
Something's coming. Something bad. You have to let these men out of here
or I guarantee you there will be hell to pay.

GUARD
Okay, what exactly is coming?

ANYA
One of the many things in this world you are not prepared to deal with.

GUARD
Is that a fact?

ANYA
Yes. And we're running out of time so just believe me when I tell you
(teleports through the bars) these things are real, they're dangerous
and they're coming.

The guard steps back, speechless.

CUT TO:

3 EXT. SUNNYDALE POLICE DEPARTMENT- NIGHT 3

An OFFICER sits in his cruiser outside the station, going over a report.
He looks up, confused, as the coffee cup on the dashboard starts
vibrantly violently.

He turns just as WILLOW materializes in the parking lot with a burst of
light and wind. Plasma discharges arc all around her.

The officer gets out of the car and approaches her.

OFFICER
What the hell was that? Listen, I don't what you think you're doing but
just-

WILLOW
Take a nap.

The officer instantly collapses to the pavement, unconscious. Willow
looks up at the second floor of the station, sensing Jonathan and Andrew
in the cell block overhead. She starts to focus her concentration.

CUT TO:

4 INT. SUNNYDALE POLICE DEPARTMENT- CELL BLOCK- NIGHT 4

Andrew and Jonathan watch anxiously as Anya tries to convince the guard
to let them go.

ANYA
So please stop looking at me like it's your first trip to the circus and
do your job. Let them out.

CUT TO:

5 EXT./INT. SUNNYDALE POLICE DEPARTMENT- CELL BLOCK- NIGHT 5

Willow focuses her power on an inset of bricks in the second-floor wall.
After a moment, the masonry starts to crumble and the bricks are ripped
free one at a time.

In the cell, Andrew and Jonathan recoil in fear as large holes appear in
the wall of their cell.

The guard shakes his head in amazement.

GUARD
You three stay here.

ANDREW
Oh, like we have a choice.

GUARD
Don't move. You'll be safe here.

ANYA
Are you even listening? This is the one place they won't be safe.

The guard ignores her and runs to the stairwell.

Out in the parking lot, Willow continues her assault. Larger and larger
chunks of the building peel away and rain down on the squad cars,
crushing them like cans. Willow raises her hand as several officers run
out of the building.

WILLOW
Back off.

One of the men shoots across the lot and crashes through the windshield
of a wrecked cruiser. Another flips head over feet and lands on the
asphalt, unconscious. The sergeant motions for the rest of the men to
hold their ground.

Willow turns her attention back to the building.

Upstairs, the bricks continue to shoot out of the walls, the hole ever
widening.

ANDREW
Stop it! Just stop! (to Anya) Why is she doing this? Tell her we didn't
do anything.

JONATHAN
Yes, we did. We signed on. We teamed up. We wanted to see where our
plans would take us. Well, take a look! This is it.

ANDREW
Maybe for you.

CUT TO:

6 EXT. SUNNYDALE STREETS- NIGHT 6

Buffy runs up and peers around the corner as the police surround Willow
but keep their distance from her.

Concerned and frightened for Willow, Buffy turns to the rear door of the
police station.

CUT TO:

7 INT. SUNNYDALE POLICE DEPARTMENT- CELL BLOCK- NIGHT 7

Andrew pleads with Anya.

ANDREW
Anya, teleport us out of here. Please, take us with you!

ANYA
I can't. It doesn't work that way.

Another huge section of the wall falls away.

ANDREW
Oh, god... help!

CUT TO:

8 INT. SUNNYDALE POLICE DEPARTMENT- SQUAD ROOM- NIGHT 8

The rear door shatters. Buffy runs in and heads for the stairwell.

CUT TO:

9 EXT. SUNNYDALE POLICE DEPARTMENT- NIGHT 9

A dozen officers and detectives encircle Willow, their guns drawn,
shouting commands at her. She ignores them, extends her arms and rises
off the ground and up to the shattered façade of the station.

CUT TO:

10 INT. SUNNYDALE POLICE DEPARTMENT- CELL BLOCK- NIGHT 10

Willow steps into the jail cell only to find it empty. The bars are
ripped open and Jonathan and Andrew are nowhere to be found.

WILLOW
Buffy...

ANYA
Willow, just stop for a second and listen to me-

Plasma arcs from Willow's hands and slams into Anya, hurling her against
the wall and knocking her out.

Willow turns and screams a banshee shriek, the sound so loud it causes
the building to tremble in its foundation.

FADE OUT

ACT II

11 EXT. SUNNYDALE STREETS- NIGHT 11

Andrew staggers and grabs the wall for support as Willow's scream tears
through his skull.

ANDREW
Aghhh! What's that sound? God, it kills.

Jonathan and Andrew cover their ears, desperately trying to block the
hideous noise. Buffy seems unaffected, however, and peers around the
corner of the building at the officers still grouped in the parking lot.
Willow's scream is incapacitating them, just as it is Andrew and
Jonathan.

BUFFY
We're gonna have to make a run for it.

ANDREW
Are you kidding? She's like Dark Phoenix up there. You expect us to just
outrun her?

BUFFY
Pretty much.

At the sound of screeching breaks behind them, Buffy turns to find
Xander pulling up in a police cruiser.

XANDER
Get in.

BUFFY
Go! Go!

Xander pulls out into the lot, circling around the confused and panicked
police officers.

CUT TO:

12 EXT. COUNTY ROAD- NIGHT 12

Xander drives down the rural road, checking his mirrors. Buffy does the
same from the passenger seat while Andrew and Jonathan cower in the back.

BUFFY
Is she coming?

XANDER
I don't see anything.

BUFFY
(to nerds)
Are you guys all right? Are you injured?

JONATHAN
I don't think so.

ANDREW
Where are you taking us?

BUFFY
We'll find someplace safe and we'll keep you there until we can stop
Willow.

ANDREW
Run and hide? That's your brilliant plan?

JONATHAN
I don't believe this.

XANDER
Boys, if you don't knock it off, I will pull this car over and you can
just walk to your painful deaths from here.

CUT TO:

13 EXT. SUNNYDALE POLICE DEPARTMENT- NIGHT 13

The door to the station opens and Willow strides out, her senses
tracking those she seeks.

CUT TO:

14 EXT. COUNTY ROAD- NIGHT 14

JONATHAN
I don't get it. Willow's a witch. Why doesn't she just wave her arms and
make us dead?

BUFFY
Because she doesn't want you dead. She wants to kill you.

ANDREW
But we didn't do anything.

Buffy backhands Andrew in the face.

ANDREW
Ow!

XANDER
I hate to admit it, Buff, but Jonathan may have a point. Why isn't she
right here, right now?

BUFFY
Maybe she's just getting her mojo up and running or maybe she hasn't
figured out exactly how much power she really has yet. Neither have we.

XANDER
Guess we keep running, then.

JONATHAN
I still can't believe that was Willow. I mean, I've known her almost as
long as you guys. Willow was... you know? She packed her own lunches and
wore floods and was always... just Willow.

Everyone is suddenly thrown forward from a violent rear impact.

XANDER
Jeez it!

ANDREW
What was that?

Xander looks into the mirror and sees a massive semi-tractor-trailer
truck looming behind them, Willow standing on the roof of the cab, her
arms extended, controlling the speeding vehicle.

XANDER
Just Willow.

The truck driver inside tries desperately to wrench back control of his
vehicle but can't move the steering wheel. He finally gives up and lets
go as the truck closes in on the rear of the squad car again.

The truck smashes into the rear of the car several times, caving in the
trunk and tearing the back bumper free.

XANDER
Any ideas?

BUFFY
Drive faster!

The truck slams into the car again and starts speeding up, pushing the
smaller car ahead of it.

XANDER
This is faster...

JONATHAN
She knows you're in this car, too, right? (no answer) Right?

Jonathan looks out the back window and up at Willow who is panting
heavily and swaying on her feet.

JONATHAN
She's draining.

XANDER
She's whating?

Willow collapses onto the roof of the truck.

JONATHAN
Just keep going.

Willow tries to get back up but it's too much for her. The squad car
starts to pull away and the truck driver manages to regain control of
the truck. He wrenches the wheel hard left and the truck screeches to a
halt as the smaller car disappears down the dark road.

ANDREW
Cool.

CUT TO:

15 INT. SPIKE'S CRYPT- NIGHT 15

DAWN paces anxiously while CLEM tries to distract her with feckless
banter. At the moment, he's rating different types of snack food for her.

CLEM
Not that I'm knocking the nacho cheese ones. I like the taste. It's just
the texture I can't deal with. So gritty. Kinda hurts my tongue. So I
give them a 7, maybe a 7.5 and... you think this is dumb, don't you?

DAWN
No! No, as taste tests go, this is definitely one of the better ones
I've been to.

CLEM
I get it. No biggie. You want to play cards?

DAWN
Clem...

CLEM
I can be a real boredom buster if you just give me half a chance.

DAWN
It's not you.

CLEM
Still, I feel responsible. It's not fair. A girl your age cooped up in a
crypt. Tell you what... let me get my hat and my coat, I'll take you to
a movie. We'll go nuts! PG-13...

DAWN
Clem, look at me. Do I look weak to you? Or incapable?

CLEM
Heck no.

DAWN
So why am I stuck here?

CLEM
No good reason I can see. (beat) I'm still real sorry about what
happened. If there's anything I can do to help, just name it.

DAWN
Anything?

CLEM
Oh, you're not go and get yourself in trouble now, are you? Or me!
'Cause your sister's the Slayer. I'm a demon. That's real good incentive
to get along with her.

DAWN
I need a demon to help me.

Clem hesitates, uncertain.

DAWN
Spike would have.

CLEM
Spike's gone.

CUT TO:

16 INT. SENEGAL, AFRICA- DEMON CAVE- DAY 16

SPIKE paces shirtless in front of the Asphyx DEMON.

DEMON
You understand, then?

SPIKE
Yeah, it's not like you haven't been clear about it, o great mysterious
one. This is a test. I don't get what I want unless I pass said test.
That about the size and shape?

DEMON
Yes.

SPIKE
And since your pad is decked out gladiator-style and no No. 2 pencils
have been provided, I guess we're not starting with the written.

Spike turns around as a brawny and muscled man enters the cave behind
him.

SPIKE
Oh, here we go, then. Just me and the walking action figure. (to demon)
I'm venturing this would be a kill-or-be-killed type of situation, then?

DEMON
To the death.

SPIKE
Right. (to opponent) Here we are now. Entertain us.

The man knocks his fists together and they instantly ignite.

SPIKE
Son of a-!

He attacks Spike with his flaming fists as Spike stumbles backward to
avoid being scorched.

CUT TO:

17 EXT. SUNNYDALE INDUSTRIAL DISTRICT- NIGHT 17

Dawn and Clem walk among the deserted warehouses and loading docks.

DAWN
Rack's place was right around her last time.

CLEM
(nervous)
Well, I don't feel anything. Oh, well. Not here. Let's go home.

DAWN
You don't feel anything because his place moves. I told you.

CLEM
Know why Rack moves all the time? Because he's shady. A bad element
comes down here.

DAWN
I get that. But Willow's part of it now. She is the element. If she
isn't around somewhere, Rack may know where she is which is why we need
to talk to him.

CLEM
We? In a face-to-face way?

DAWN
Or me. I'll go in there without you.

CLEM
No, no! It's fine. I'm good. It's just Rack's not partial to the
floppy-eared. He has a thing. But hey, I'm in. Absolutely.

DAWN
Either way, just get me there.

CLEM
Say Rack does know where Willow is. He's not going to tell you for
nothing. He's going to want something.

DAWN
I have money.

CLEM
That's not the kind of something he's going to want. Rack likes little
girls.

DAWN
I am not a little girl.

CLEM
I don't know if you've thought his through. I'm supposed to keep you
safe and this whole thing is... I mean, even if you find Willow, you
really think you can stop her?

CUT TO:

18 INT. THE MAGIC BOX- NIGHT 18

The door opens and Xander, Anya, Buffy and Jonathan and Andrew walk in.

XANDER
Anya, thanks for getting here so fast. It's a big help.

ANYA
Once again, Xander in need of big help.

XANDER
Whatever. So can you still sense Willow? Knowing her location would be
real big comfort right about now.

ANYA
No, I can't. Which means whatever she's feeling, it's gone way beyond
simple vengeance.

XANDER
Did I mention me needing the comfort?

BUFFY
Whatever we got, we better grab it fast. This is one of the first places
she's gonna think to look for us.

ANDREW
Then what are we doing here? You know, I could summon a demon that would
kill her.

XANDER
And I could smack you so hard your eyeballs would switch sockets.

BUFFY
No one is getting killed. (to Andrew) Sit down.

She turns back to the stack of blank magick books on the reading table
while Anya goes over to the register.

BUFFY
We need to find some sort of magicks that'll stop Willow or at least
slow her down.

XANDER
But she drained the place. Took everything.

ANYA
Not everything.

She leans down and unlocks a compartment beneath the register and takes
out a wooden box. She opens and takes out an ancient leather-bound tome.

XANDER
What is it?

ANYA
A book of protection spells. Anti-magick, our last resort.

XANDER
Think you can work this stuff?

She opens the book and nods.

ANYA
Well, okay... good news is the text is intact. Bad news is I can't read
a word of it. It's like in ancient Sumerian or something.

Jonathan gets up and comes over.

JONATHAN
Could I take a look at it?

BUFFY
Shut up.

JONATHAN
Right. I just thought, you know, as long as you're protecting us, the
least I could do is-

BUFFY
I'm not protecting you, Jonathan. None of us are. We're doing this for
Willow. The only reason it happens to be you're lucky day is because if
Willow kills you, she crosses a line. I lose a friend. And I hate losing.

JONATHAN
I get that. It's just... you know she's running out of power, right? I
can tell. I can practically feel it. I've dabbled in magicks.

XANDER
I think Willow's in a league of her own about now, dabble boy.

JONATHAN
But still, running that hot for that long, it's just a matter of time
before you gotta recharge, no matter how juiced-up you are.

BUFFY
Thank you. Now remember that thing we talked about?

JONATHAN
About me shutting up? (she nods) Right.

He turns and scurries back to his seat by Andrew. Xander pulls Buffy
aside and talks with her quietly.

XANDER
Buffy, let's say this works and we stop Willow from working the hoodoo
for a minute. What then?

BUFFY
I talk to her.

XANDER
Great. And say what?

BUFFY
Look, whatever she's gonna do, she starts with those two. They're the
line she cannot cross. And if she is running low on magicks, then she's
probably somewhere right now trying to get it all back.

CUT TO:

19 INT. WARLOCK'S LAIR- INNER SANCTUM- NIGHT 19

Various people lie on the floor, delirious and consumed by magick. RACK
sits on the floor playing solitaire. The door opens.

RACK
Hey, babe. I've been waiting for you.

Reveal Willow standing silently in the doorway.

RACK
Guess the rehab didn't take, huh? That's the way it goes sometimes.

He gets up and walks over to her.

RACK
But I gotta say, I could feel you coming a mile away, the power you got.
And you know something, sweetness? I liked it. When you first came to
me, you were just a little slip of a girl. Look at you now... all growed
up.

He leans in close, his face inches from hers.

RACK
So full of dark juice... and you still taste like strawberries. Only
now... you're ripe. You came because you want something, don't ya? (she
nods) I thought so. So tell me, Strawberry, what on this earth do you
want?

WILLOW
Just to take a little tour.

Plasma bolts shoot from her hand as she buries it in his chest. He gasps
in pain and surprise as she lifts him off the floor and feeds off his
magickal energy.

CUT TO:

20 INT. WARLOCK'S LAIR- WAITING ROOM- NIGHT 20

First Clem, then Dawn materialize out of the ether and into Rack's
waiting room.

DAWN
Yay, Clem! Making with the demon senses. I knew you could find this
place.

CLEM
It's not very clean.

DAWN
Don't wig out on me again.

CLEM
It's just I'm still not so sure you should be here. I'm not so sure I
should be here.

DAWN
It'll only take a minute. Come on.

She heads for the door to the inner room but Clem hangs back.

DAWN
You want to wait here?

CLEM
If that works for you.

DAWN
Be right back.

She opens the door and walks in.

21 INT. WARLOCK'S LAIR- INNER SANCTUM- NIGHT 21

Dawn doesn't see anyone and moves further into the room.

DAWN
Willow?

She turns and comes face to face with Rack's corpse suspended
upside-down from the ceiling. She screams and recoils in fright, then
turns to run out only to find Willow blocking her way.

WILLOW
Hey, cutie.

FADE OUT

ACT III

22 INT. WARLOCK'S LAIR- INNER SANCTUM- NIGHT 22

Resume. Willow's eyes are now jet black and her skin is laced with dark
veins. Dawn backs away, terrified.

WILLOW
What are you doing here? 'Cause if you're looking for me, now's not a
great time.

DAWN
You look terrible.

WILLOW
Do I?

DAWN
You're back on the magicks.

WILLOW
No, honey. I am the magicks.

DAWN
Did you kill that guy?

WILLOW
It's an improvement, believe me.

DAWN
I have to go.

She ducks around Willow and runs for the door. Suddenly Willow is in
front of her again, blocking her way.

WILLOW
Why? So you can run and tell Buffy?

DAWN
Willow, please. Just listen to me...

WILLOW
You don't have to talk. Just think real loud. I can hear you.

DAWN
You're freaking me out.

WILLOW
Oh, don't be like that. I'm just a little wired. And I have some things
to do. I thought if anybody'd understand-

DAWN
I miss Tara too! But this- what you're doing here- this is not the way
to go. You're only going to make things worse. But I promise, it's not
too late to-

WILLOW
You miss her?

DAWN
(shocked)
Yes.

WILLOW
Did you cry? Of course you did. I get that. I understand the crying. You
cry because you're human. But you weren't always.

DAWN
Yes, I was.

WILLOW
No, please. You're telling me you don't remember? You used to be some
mystic ball of energy. Maybe that's why you're crying all the time,
Dawnie. 'Cause you don't belong here. Want to go back? End the pain?
You'll be happier. I'll be happier. We'll all be a lot happier without
listening to the constant whining.

DAWN
(tearful)
Willow, stop.

WILLOW
(mocking)
Mom... Buffy... Tara... waah. It's time you go back to being a little
energy ball. No more tears, Dawnie.

Dawn backs up against the wall, then closes her eyes as Willow closes
in. Suddenly the door behind them slams off its hinges. Willow turns to
find Buffy staring hard at her.

BUFFY
I think you need to get away from her.

CUT TO:

23 INT. THE MAGIC BOX- NIGHT 23

Anya is busy trying to translate the spells while Xander watches over
her shoulder.

ANYA
You're too close.

XANDER
How am I supposed to read?

ANYA
I don't know. I'm staring right at this stuff and I can't read it.

XANDER
Well, how's the translation coming? What have we got so far?

ANYA
So far we've got "the". Well, either "the" or "towards", I'm not really
sure. I can't do this. I'm in retail. Stupid ancient Sumerian.

JONATHAN
I'm pretty sure it's Babylonian. The text is similar but the dialect is
completely different.

XANDER
Great. Babylonian. Thanks a bushel. But unless you can read Babylonian,
why don't you sit back down?

Jonathan quickly returns to his seat next to Andrew.

ANDREW
Why are you helping them?

JONATHAN
Because they're saving our lives, you moron.

ANDREW
Uh-huh. And what then? Even if they kill that Wicca bitch, you think
they're just going to let us walk? They own us.

JONATHAN
So what do you want me to do?

ANDREW
Look around. You know magick. We're in a magick shop. We can take them.
The books are sucked dry but so what? There's still like tons of
supplies all around us. This is the best chance we're going to get to
make it out of here.

JONATHAN
And do what?

ANDREW
Start over. We can be the Duo, you and me. You can even be the leader. I
swear I'll take orders. I like taking orders. Just tell me what to do.

JONATHAN
You want an order?

Jonathan stands up and shoves Andrew against a bookcase.

JONATHAN
Grow up.

XANDER
Hey, now, fellas! Play nice or you'll break our concentration.

Jonathan lets Andrew go and sits back down.

ANYA
Which means no protection spell.

XANDER
And Willow will make you two boneless chickens skinless, too.

ANDREW
And then what? You think your little witch buddy's gonna stop with us?
You saw her! She's a truck-driving magick mama and we've got maybe
seconds before Darth Rosenberg grinds everybody into Jawa burgers and
not one of you bunch has the midiclorians to stop her.

XANDER
You've never had any tiny bit of sex, have you?

ANYA
The annoying virgin has a point. What if Willow filets their souls and
comes after us?

XANDER
She won't.

ANYA
You don't know that.

XANDER
We're her friends, Anya. Her family. She would never hurt us.

ANYA
She tried to use you for a hood ornament, Xander. She doesn't care if
you live or die.

XANDER
Guess you two finally have something in common.

ANYA
I care if you live or die, Xander. I'm just not sure which one I want.

XANDER
Again with the comfort. Look, be both know things might get ugly at
Wiccapalooza and if it gets really bad-

ANYA
Let me guess. You'll propose?

XANDER
I need to know if you're going to turn on me. Use this little shindig as
an excuse for some sweet revenge.

ANYA
There is nothing in this world that would give me greater or more
lasting satisfaction than to reap bloody vengeance upon you, Xander
Harris. But I can't. Not officially. Not magickally. So smile, it's your
lucky day. You got away with it. I can't hurt you.

XANDER
Right, 'cause you varnishing the table with Spike- how could that
possibly have hurt? It may have chafed...

ANYA
That wasn't vengeance. It was solace. Look, I really can't hurt you so
I'm just going to have to settle for hating you.

XANDER
If that's what you need to do.

ANYA
Don't! You don't get to play the martyr.

XANDER
I'm not.

ANYA
You know, none of this would be happening if it weren't for you.

XANDER
You think I don't know that? You think I'm the hero of this piece? I saw
the gun before Warren raised it. I saw it and I couldn't move. He shot
two of my friends before I could even... (beat) You want me to know how
useless I am? That it's my fault? Thanks. I already got the memo.

Anya looks down, chastened.

ANYA
I was talking about us.

CUT TO:

24 INT. WARLOCK'S LAIR- INNER SANCTUM- NIGHT 24

Buffy enters the room and approaches Willow.

BUFFY
You need to back down a minute and think, Will.

WILLOW
I wasn't going to hurt her, buzzkill.

DAWN
(sotto)
She tried to turn me back.

BUFFY
(to Willow)
You're attacking the people who love you now?

WILLOW
Only the ones in my way.

BUFFY
That's not... you need help.

WILLOW
I'm doing fine on my own, thanks.

Buffy edges forward, then grabs Dawn by the arm, pulling her across the
room and propelling her toward the door.

BUFFY
Dawn, get out of here. Go!

Dawn gets to the door but can't open it.

WILLOW
Don't. We're all friends.

BUFFY
Willow, I know what you want to do but you have to listen to me. The
forces inside you are incredibly powerful. They're strong but you're
stronger. You have to remember you're still Willow.

WILLOW
Let me tell you something about Willow. She's a loser and she always has
been. People picked on Willow in junior high school, high school, up
until college, with her stupid mousy ways. And now, Willow's a junkie.

BUFFY
I can help.

WILLOW
The only thing Willow was ever good for- the only thing I had going for
me- were the moments, just moments, when Tara would look at me and I was
wonderful. (cold) And that will never happen again.

BUFFY
I know this hurts. Bad. But Willow, if you let loose with the magicks,
it'll never end.

WILLOW
(smiles)
Promise?

BUFFY
You don't want that.

WILLOW
Why not?

BUFFY
Because you'll lose everything. Your friends, yourself. Willow, if you
let this control you, then the world goes away and all of us with it.
There's so much to live for. Will, there's too much-

WILLOW
Oh, please! This is your pitch? Buffy, you hate it here as much as I do.
I'm just more honest about it.

BUFFY
That's not true.

WILLOW
You're trying to sell me on the world? The one where you lie to your
friends when you're not trying to kill them and you screw a vampire just
to feel and insane asylums are the comfy alternative? This world? Buffy,
it's me. I know you were happier when you were in the ground. The only
time you were ever at peace in your whole life was when you were dead...
until Willow brought you back. You know, with magick.

Buffy and Dawn sway on their feet and Buffy blinks, confused.

25 INT. THE MAGIC BOX- NIGHT 25

WILLOW
Aw, sorry. The trip can be kinda rough if you're, you know, not me.

Pull back to reveal they are in the Magic Box now, having been brought
there magickally by Willow. Dawn falls to floor, unconscious.

BUFFY
Dawn!

Buffy drops to her knees next to her sister, woozy and disoriented.
Willow turns to Jonathan and Andrew and smiles a pitiless smile.

WILLOW
Jonathan. Andrew. You boys like magick, don't you? Abracadabra.

Willow thrusts her hands outward and a stream of plasma and magickal
energy engulfs the two cowering nerds.

FADE OUT

ACT IV

26 INT. THE MAGIC BOX- NIGHT 26

Resume. Willow's magickal energy surrounds Andrew and Jonathan but
doesn't touch them. They look at each other, confused and surprised to
be alive.

WILLOW
Okay. Didn't see that coming.

ANDREW
What was that?

JONATHAN
We're alive...

WILLOW
You guys want to take it slow? I can do that, too. Ask Warren.

She sends another burst of dark power at the duo.

BUFFY
Don't!

Again, the primal forces surround them but leave them unscathed.

CUT TO:

Anya stands in the shadows near the front of the store chanting in
Sumerian, providing the protection spell that is counteracting Willow's
power.

CUT TO:

Willow sees that her second blast has no more effect than the first and
stops, staring at Andrew and Jonathan.

JONATHAN
(to Andrew)
Let's get out of here.

They make a break for the door but Willow moves in front of them. They
switch directions and head for the back but Willow slams and locks the
door from across the room.

WILLOW
No, no... stay. I mean, we're just getting started. I've got big party
plans.

Jonathan takes a sword off the wall and brandishes it. Andrew does the
same.

BUFFY
Will...

XANDER
No, don't.

WILLOW
Guys, come on. I'm just getting' a wood for the violence here. And you
know what they say, if at first you don't succeed...

She sends another stream of energy searing across the room at her
enemies.

SMASH CUT TO:

27 INT. SENEGAL, AFRICA- DEMON CAVE- DAY 27

Spike reels back against the wall of the cave. He's bloodied, bruised
and scorched. He looks up at the warrior with the flaming fists and
sneers.

SPIKE
Had enough?

The warrior decks him and he stumbles backward. He takes several more
blows to the head and goes down on his knees. Spike looks up with grim
determination and catches the next blow in mid-swing. He grips the man's
fist in his hand; his skin smokes and sizzles as it burns. He hurls the
warrior backward, then cringes at the sight of his seared hand.

SPIKE
Bad move. Bad move. Bad move.

The warrior charges him again. Spike ducks the blow, flips the man to
the ground, kicks him in the ribs, then straddles him from behind. He
seizes the warrior's head and wrenches it violently to the side,
snapping his neck. The man drops to the ground at Spike's feet, dead.

SPIKE
(to demon)
Looks like local boy loses.

DEMON
So it would appear.

SPIKE
Good on me, then. I get what I came for. I passed, right?

DEMON
Indeed. You have passed the first stage of the test.

SPIKE
Right. I get- wait. First stage?

The demon chuckles and recedes into the shadows.

SPIKE
Bugger.

CUT TO:

28 INT. THE MAGIC BOX- NIGHT 28

Willow's power streams out from her and envelopes Jonathan and Andrew.
They stand at the center of the maelstrom, terrified but unharmed.
Willow stops and smiles.

WILLOW
Damn, that is one effective counter-spell. Won't keep you alive, though.

BUFFY
Will, stop! You need to give this up now.

WILLOW
I get it. You boys put a spell on yourselves, didn't you? Protecting you
from harm, from magicks? That's cute.

BUFFY
Will, back off before somebody gets hurt.

WILLOW
How about I back off right after? So which one of you boys worked the
mojo? Doesn't matter, really. I'm just curious.

Up near the front of the store, Anya continues chanting quietly but
earnestly.

WILLOW
Just because I can't do magicks to you, doesn't mean I can't do them on
myself. Domehim!

A burst of plasma arcs across Willow's body.

WILLOW
Now I'm pretty sure I'm strong enough to beat you to death.

She casually flips the reading table across the room. Buffy runs over
and puts herself between Willow and her targets.

BUFFY
I don't want to hurt you.

Willow smiles and decks Buffy. The Slayer flies across the room and into
a bookshelf, shattering it.

WILLOW
Not a problem.

Buffy gets back up and faces off with Willow.

BUFFY
I said I didn't want to...

She backhands Willow and sends her crashing through a walled partition.
Willow tumbles to the floor amid the shattered debris.

BUFFY
...didn't say I wouldn't.

XANDER
(to Jonathan)
Let's go.

JONATHAN
What about Willow?

XANDER
Buffy can handle her.

DAWN
Are you sure?

XANDER
That's why we're leaving.

He takes Dawn by the hand and leads her to the front door, Jonathan and
Andrew right behind. He stops for Anya.

XANDER
An?

ANYA
I can't. I have to stay here to keep the spell going on Willow. (off his
look) Go! Do something right.

He nods and leaves and she goes back to chanting. Willow looks up in
time to see the door close behind Jonathan.

WILLOW
No!

She gets up to pursue them but Buffy grabs her from behind and hurls her
across the room. Willow lands at the base of the loft ladder, then gets
to her feet and stares at Buffy. Buffy stares back, defiant.

WILLOW
So... here we are.

BUFFY
Are we really gonna do this?

WILLOW
Come on! This is a huge deal for me. Six years as a sideman, now I get
to be the Slayer.

BUFFY
A killer isn't a Slayer. Being a Slayer means something you can't
conceive of.

WILLOW
Oh, Buffy... you really need to have every square inch of your ass
kicked.

BUFFY
Then show me what you got... and I'll show you what a Slayer really is.

Willow charges Buffy and they engage, punching, kicking, flipping. They
seem evenly matched, Willow's strength and skill the equal of Buffy's.
Buffy starts to falter under Willow's onslaught and the witch picks her
up and hurls her across the room.

CUT TO:

29 EXT. SUNNYDALE STREETS- NIGHT 29

Xander, Dawn, Jonathan and Andrew stride down the street. Jonathan and
Andrew still have their swords held at the ready.

ANDREW
Where are you taking us?

DAWN
Someplace safe.

JONATHAN
Like where?

DAWN
Xander?

XANDER
I don't know.

CUT TO:

30 INT. THE MAGIC BOX- NIGHT 30

Buffy struggles to her feet but Willow raises her hand and the loft
ladder rolls across the room and pins her between it and a shattered
bookshelf. With Buffy trapped, Willow turns to the door, intent on
pursuing her targets.

Buffy strains against the ladder with all she's got and breaks free. She
launches herself at Willow, tackling her to the floor.

WILLOW
Get off, super bitch!

She throws Buffy off her, sending the Slayer crashing through the
counter display case. Buffy is instantly back on her feet, raining a
series of furious blows down on Willow but Willow gives as good as she
gets.

She sends a roundhouse blow at Buffy's head but Buffy seizes her arm
mid-swing and stops it.

BUFFY
I can help you stop.

Willow breaks the hold and pounds Buffy the ground with a series of
devastating blows, leaving the Slayer stunned and bleeding.

WILLOW
I thought you were gonna show me what a Slayer was.

CUT TO:

31 EXT. SUNNYDALE STREETS- NIGHT 31

The group turns down an alley at a brisk run. Jonathan lags behind,
panting heavily. He stops to catch his breath and the others reluctantly
stop with him.

JONATHAN
Can't... run anymore. Need to... breathe.

XANDER
If you want to keep breathing, you gotta keep moving.

ANDREW
This is bogus. We gotta get out of this town. (to Jonathan) Mexico. We
should go to Mexico.

XANDER
Hey, you're not going anywhere. We just gotta find a place to hide you
two until we get the all-clear from Buffy.

ANDREW
Yeah, and what if the Slayer's dead already? We're just supposed to sit
around waiting for Sabrina to show up and disembowel us?

XANDER
You do what I say to-

Andrew flips his sword up, the point of the blade at Xander's neck.

ANDREW
I don't think so.

CUT TO:

32 INT. THE MAGIC BOX- NIGHT 32

Buffy is back on her feet, fighting Willow with all she's got. She
seizes Willow, lifts her and throws her across the store and through a
display case. Willow rolls over with a groan and looks up to find Anya
standing in front of her, chanting.

WILLOW
Well, hey. Isn't that interesting. Anya's still here.

She gets up and moves toward Anya. Buffy runs up to stop her but Willow
casually throws her aside.

WILLOW
Looks like I've been beatin' on the wrong gal.

CUT TO:

33 EXT. SUNNYDALE STREETS- NIGHT 33

Xander motions for calm.

XANDER
Whoa, whoa. Okay, Andy. Let's just put the sword down.

ANDREW
Oh, no way. I'm not going to die because of something I didn't even do.

XANDER
You're not going to die.

DAWN
Leave him alone.

Behind Andrew, Jonathan raises his sword puts the tip of his blade
against Andrew's jugular.

JONATHAN
Let him go, Andrew. (beat) You heard me.

ANDREW
You let me go first.

JONATHAN
No. Him.

ANDREW
It's your move.

JONATHAN
No. Yours.

ANDREW
I'm not moving. I'm not gonna budge till-

Jonathan presses the point harder into Andrew's neck and he drops his
sword.

ANDREW
-right now! Ow!

JONATHAN
Xander's right. We're not leaving Sunnydale. When this is over, you and
I are going back to jail to do our time.

CUT TO:

34 INT. THE MAGIC BOX- NIGHT 34

Willow seizes Anya by throat and lifts her off her feet. She screams to
Buffy for help but Buffy lies unconscious on the floor amid the
shattered remains of the Magic Box.

ANYA
Help me! Help me! (to Willow) You're hurting me.

WILLOW
You can't block my spells if you can't chant and you can't chant if your
sleeping.

She throws Anya across the room into the herb shelves. They shatter and
Anya drops to the floor in a battered heap, debris raining down on her.
She turns from Anya to find Buffy struggling to her feet again.

WILLOW
Buffy, I gotta tell ya. I get it now. The Slayer thing really isn't
about the violence. It's about the power.

She looses a stream of energy at Buffy. The plasma hits her full force
and throws her back against the wall. She collapses to the floor,
moaning and in pain. Willow stands over her, smiling.

WILLOW
And there's no one in the world who has the power to stop me now.

There's a sudden flash of green light and Willow is thrown the length of
the store. She cries out in pain and rolls over, bleeding from the nose.
She looks over to find RUPERT GILES standing in the doorway, his gaze
cold and hard.

GILES
I'd like to test that theory.

FADE TO BLACK

GRAVE

ACT V

35 INT. THE MAGIC BOX- NIGHT 35

Resume. Buffy and Anya come to simultaneously and stare in shock at
Giles, standing in the threshold staring hard at Willow.

BUFFY
Giles?

ANYA
Giles!

WILLOW
Uh-oh... daddy's home! I'm in wicked trouble now.

GILES
You have no idea. You have to stop what you're doing.

WILLOW
Oh, sorry. Can't do that. I'm not finished yet.

She starts to stand up.

GILES
Neither am I. Stay down.

He waves his hand and Willow collapses back to the floor.

ANYA
How'd you do that?

Willow chuckles.

WILLOW
That's borrowed power. No way is it gonna be strong enough-

GILES
I'm here to help you.

WILLOW
Thanks but I can kill a couple geeks all by myself. But hey, if you'd
like to watch... I mean, that's what you Watchers are good at, right?
Watching? (hard) Butting in on things that don't concern you.

GILES
You concern me, Willow. Stay on this path and you'll wind up dead.

BUFFY
Willow, listen to him. I don't want to fight you anymore.

WILLOW
I don't want to fight you, either. I want to fight him.

She rises up and Giles waves his hand again.

GILES
Stay down!

WILLOW
No.

This time Giles' power has no effect on her.

WILLOW
Remember that little spat we had before you left? When you were under
the delusion that you were still relevant here? You called me a rank,
arrogant amateur. Well, buckle up, Rupert...

Willow's eyes go jet black and her voice deepens, becomes guttural and
menacing.

WILLOW
...'cause I've gone pro. (chants) Asmodea bring forth-

GILES
Vincire!

A glowing ring of green energy shoots from his palm and wraps itself
around Willow, binding her.

WILLOW
No! Get it off! Solvo... libero-

Her head suddenly snaps back and she loses consciousness. The binding
energy changes hue from green to a deep blue and lifts Willow off the
floor. She hangs, suspended in mid-air, unconscious and bound.

Buffy and Anya look uncertainly from Willow to Giles.

BUFFY
What did you do?

GILES
Contained her and her powers within a binding field. It puts her in a
kind of stasis for the time- you cut your hair.

Buffy smiles at him, then hugs him, tears in her eyes. Anya watches for
a moment, then runs over to him as well.

ANYA
I'm blonde. I colored my hair. Again. I'm blonde.

GILES
(smiles)
Yes, I noticed.

He pulls her into a hug as well. After a moment, he lets them both go
and walks over to Willow.

GILES
I'm very sorry about Tara.

Willow stirs and comes around. Her speech is halting, fragmented, as if
she's fighting against a heavy anesthetic.

WILLOW
This... won't... hold me forever.

CUT TO:

36 INT. THE MAGIC BOX- TRAINING ROOM- NIGHT 36

Giles and Buffy stand together in her training room.

GILES
I came as soon as I heard.

BUFFY
Council?

GILES
The Council haven't a clue- about much of anything, really. No, there's
an extremely powerful coven in Devon. They sensed the rise of a
dangerous magickal force here in Sunnydale. A dark force fueled by grief.

BUFFY
Willow.

GILES
I'd so hoped it wasn't her. And then a seer in the coven told me about
Tara. That's when the coven imbued me with their powers.

BUFFY
And sent you here to bring Willow down?

GILES
Buffy, what's happened here?

BUFFY
God... I don't even know where to start.

GILES
Well, Willow's clearly been abusing the magicks.

BUFFY
(nods)
She has. She was and I barely even noticed. Giles, everything's just
been so... (sighs) Xander left Anya at the altar and Anya's a vengeance
demon again. Dawn's a total klepto. Money's been so tight that I've been
slinging burgers at the Doublemeat Palace... and I've been sleeping with
Spike.

She looks up at Giles, gauging his reaction. He stares at her for a
moment, then bursts out laughing.

GILES
I'm sorry...

Buffy is taken aback, shocked at his reaction, but it's not long until
the absurdity of it all hits her and she's laughing hysterically as well.

CUT TO:

37 INT. THE MAGIC BOX- STORE- NIGHT 37

Anya cleans the mess while Willow floats in the air nearby. Willow is
conscious now but still immobilized. She calls out to Anya with her mind.

WILLOW
(v.o.)
Anya...

Anya turns around, confused.

ANYA
Willow?

WILLOW
(v.o.)
I need you, Anya. I need you to do something for me.

ANYA
I know what you're trying to do. I hate to burst your bubble but that
mind-control mojo doesn't work on vengeance demons so why don't you just-

WILLOW
(v.o.)
Stop talking and listen.

ANYA
Okay.

WILLOW
(v.o.)
You need to free me.

ANYA
No.

Anya shakes her head and heads for the back room.

WILLOW
(v.o.)
You don't want to call out to them.

Anya instantly stops.

WILLOW
(v.o.)
You want to take away this binding spell.

ANYA
I don't know how.

WILLOW
(v.o.)
I do. Do you want me to tell you?

CUT TO:

38 INT. THE MAGIC BOX- TRAINING ROOM- NIGHT 38

Giles and Buffy are still laughing hysterically.

GILES
Duct tape?

BUFFY
On their mouths, so the demon could eat them.

GILES
Because they were figments?

BUFFY
All of it. You, Sunnydale... and I was just some nutcase in L.A.

GILES
Of course. Why didn't we see it before?

Their laughter gradually subsides and Giles takes Buffy's hand.

GILES
Can you forgive me?

BUFFY
For what?

GILES
I should never have left.

BUFFY
No. You were right to leave. We're just... stupid.

GILES
I know you're all stupid. (smiles) I should never have abandoned you.

BUFFY
No, Giles, you were right about everything. It is time I was an adult.

GILES
Sometimes the most adult thing you can do is ask for help when you need
it.

BUFFY
Now you tell me. I guess... I wasn't ready before. It took a long time
for that feeling to go away. The feeling that I wasn't really here. It
was like... when I clawed my way out of that grave, I left something
behind. A part of me. I just don't understand why I'm back.

GILES
You have a calling.

BUFFY
But it was my time, Giles. Someone would have taken my place. So why?

Giles has no answer for her.

BUFFY
Right. What's going to happen to Willow?

GILES
Well, the coven's working on a way to extract her powers without...
killing her. And should she survive... you ought to know, Buffy, that
there's no guarantee she'll be as she was. Willow has killed a human
being. How will she be able to live with herself?

WILLOW
(o.s.)
I wouldn't worry about that.

Buffy and Giles turn to find Anya in the doorway, suspended in air,
unconscious. Willow steps out from behind Anya and releases her. She
collapses to the floor.

WILLOW
Willow doesn't live here anymore.

FADE OUT

ACT VI

39 INT. THE MAGIC BOX- TRAINING ROOM- NIGHT 39

Resume. Buffy looks to Giles, then charges Willow. The witch merely
raises her hand and blasts Buffy back across the room where she slams
into the brick wall and drops to the floor.

Giles extends his arm and casts his binding spell again.

GILES
Vincire!

The green energy shoots from his hand and encircles Willow. She waves
dismissively and dissolves it with a single word.

WILLOW
Solutum. Fool me once...

She looks at the knives and throwing stars hanging on the wall near her
and a dozen blades spring to life and hover in the air.

WILLOW
...shame on you.

With a nod of her head, the blades whip across the room directly at
Giles.

GILES
Tego!

Giles' spell pulls the sparring dummy from across the room. It stops in
front of him just as the knives slam into it. Willow waves the dummy
aside just as another ball of green energy forms in Giles' hand. He
winds up like a baseball pitcher and hurls it at her.

GILES
Excudo!

The plasma slams into Willow with tremendous force hurling her backward
and through the brick wall of the training room and out into the store
proper.

CUT TO:

40 EXT. SUNNYDALE RESIDENTIAL STREETS- NIGHT 40

The four refugees walk along the darkened streets.

DAWN
Where are we going?

XANDER
I have no idea.

DAWN
What?

XANDER
I don't know, okay? I can't even run away well and that's something I'm
usually good at.

DAWN
Maybe we should go back and help.

XANDER
Yeah, 'cause I've been such a big help already. Standing around like a
monkey while Buffy gets shot. Tara's dead and Willow's... losing.

DAWN
Well, standing around feeling sorry for yourself isn't helping either,
Xander. Okay? You know if Spike were here, he'd go back and fight.

XANDER
Sure, if he wasn't too busy trying to rape your sister.

DAWN
(shocked)
What?

XANDER
Forget it.

DAWN
I don't believe you!

XANDER
Fine.

DAWN
He wouldn't do that.

XANDER
Is this blind spot like a genetic trait with the Summers women? The only
useful thing Spike ever did was finally leave town.

CUT TO:

41 INT. SENEGAL, AFRICA- DEMON CAVE- DAY 41

Hideous screams and snarls emanate from the shadows of the cave. The
severed head of a horned demon flies out of the darkness and rolls to
stop along the cave floor. Spike emerges after it, beaten, burned,
bruised and bloody.

SPIKE
(to demon)
Well, that was a bloody doddle and a piece o' piss. You got any more
ruddy tests for me, you ponce? I'll take anything you can throw at me if
it'll get me what I need to take care of the Slayer. Give her what's
coming to her. You just bring it on. Bring on the whole...

He stops at the sound of thousands of legs skittering across the cave
floor.

SPIKE
Bloody hell...

A swarm of beetles covers his chest, neck, then his head. He grunts in
pain and one scampers up his nose and down his throat.

CUT TO:

42 INT. THE MAGIC BOX- STORE- NIGHT 42

The store is in shambles. The furniture shattered, the merchandise
broken and littering the floor. Walls torn asunder and support beams
cracked and leaning drunkenly. Broken electrical lines hiss and spark.
Small fires burn here and there. Willow stands among the wreckage,
covered in dust, a gash across her cheek. She smirks at Giles who stands
across from her, head bowed, beaten and bruised.

WILLOW
Is that all you got, Jeeves? 'Cause I could stand to go another ten
rounds. Whereas... you can barely stand.

GILES
Your powers may be undeniably great... but I can still hurt you if I
have to.

WILLOW
Boy, you just don't get it, do you? Nothing can hurt me now.

She points to the laceration on her face.

WILLOW
This? Is nothing.

She waves her hand and the cut disappears leaving her cheek unmarked.

WILLOW
It's all nothing.

Buffy peers through the shattered wall at Willow and Giles.

GILES
I see. If you lose someone you love... then the other people in your
life who care about you become meaningless. I wonder what Tara would say
about that.

WILLOW
You can ask her yourself.

She hurls a burst of plasma at Giles but Buffy dashes into the room and
pushes him out of the way. The bolt strikes the support beam holding up
the loft. Buffy and Giles tumble to the floor as the entire loft
collapses and crashes down around them.

WILLOW
(to Buffy)
You're always saving everyone. It's kinda pesky.

She reaches down to a pile of burning books and lifts a ball of fire
out. It hovers in her hand.

WILLOW
You probably even think you're buying escape time for Jonathan and the
other one. Well, I got a little secret for ya. I can kill them from
anywhere I want. With this. It'll find them... it'll bury them. Along
with anyone else helping those dead men walking.

Buffy gets to her feet.

BUFFY
Don't...

WILLOW
Unless somebody, somehow, can get there in time to save them. Oh, well...

She tosses the fireball up and it shoots through the ceiling and out
into the night.

WILLOW
Fly, my pretty, fly! (smiles; to Buffy) See what I did there?

GILES
(to Buffy)
Go.

Buffy shares a look with Giles, then runs out after the fireball.

WILLOW
Good luck! (to Giles) Thought she'd never leave. Now I finally have you
all to myself.

CUT TO:

43 EXT. THE MAGIC BOX- NIGHT 43

Buffy exits the store and looks up as the fireball climbs into the night
sky.

CUT TO:

44 INT. THE MAGIC BOX- STORE- NIGHT 44

Willow paces, circling Giles.

WILLOW
You're such a hypocrite. Waltzing in here with your borrowed magicks so
you could tell me what? "Magicks bad. Behave. Be a good girl." Well, I
don't think you're in any position to be telling me what to do. Do you?

She looks up at Giles who is pinned to the ceiling. She releases him and
he crashes down to the floor.

WILLOW
I used to think you had all the answers, that I had so much to learn
from you.

GILES
Willow...

She gestures at him and he shoots back up to the ceiling again.

WILLOW
You were jealous. Still are. Just couldn't bear that I was the one with
power. That's why you ran away. That's why you-

GILES
Incurso!

A wave of power shoots out of Giles' mouth and knocks Willow backward.
He drops back down to the floor with a thud.

WILLOW
That was rude! (beat) Now I forgot what I was saying.

Giles struggles to sit up.

GILES
(panting)
Perhaps you're not as strong as you think you are. You're expending way
too much of your mystical energies to maintain your powers. At this
rate, you'll burn out... and up.

WILLOW
Blah, blah, blah

GILES
Willow, you need to stop.

She teleports across the room and is instantly right in his face.

WILLOW
What I need is a little pick-me-up.

She attaches her hand to Giles chest and starts draining his power.
Giles utters a deep shuddering groan of agony as Willow drains his
energy.

After a moment, she breaks contact and staggers backward, leaving Giles
to topple over onto the floor. Willow backs up against the counter and
slides down to the floor, her head spinning.

WILLOW
(panting)
Whoa... head rush. Who's your supplier? This is... wow. It's incredible.
I'm so juiced. Giles, it's like no mortal person has ever had this much
power! Ever. It's like I'm connected to everything. I can feel... it
feels like... I can feel... everyone. Oh... Oh, my god. All the emotion
and the pain. No! It's too much. It's just too much!

GILES
(weak)
Willow, it doesn't have to be like that. You... you can stop it.

Willow staggers back to her feet.

WILLOW
Yeah. I can. I have to stop this. I'll make it go away.

GILES
Willow...

WILLOW
Oh, you poor bastards! Your suffering has to end.

Willow rises off the floor and disappears in a flash of energy.

GILES
No...

FADE OUT

ACT VII

45 EXT. SUNNYDALE CEMETERY- NIGHT 45

Xander kicks at the door to a crypt with little success. Jonathan and
Andrew use their swords to pry at the door of a second crypt nearby. The
sword slips and jams Jonathan.

JONATHAN
Son of a bitch!

ANDREW
Butt wipe.

JONATHAN
I wasn't talking to you.

ANDREW
Oh. Reflex.

XANDER
Man, they've really tightened security up here lately. One too many
squatters from the Hellmouth.

ANDREW
Hide out in the cemetery... what a fantastic idea.

XANDER
Yeah, I'm working on a whole shut-the-hell-up pitch you might like, too.

DAWN
Xander?

XANDER
I've had just about as much as I can stand baby-sitting a couple of
social retards who don't appreciate-

DAWN
Xander!

XANDER
What?

DAWN
What is that?

They all turn and follow her gaze into the night sky. Willow's fireball
streaks through the darkness directly at them, Buffy running and
vaulting the headstones right behind it.

BUFFY
Get out of there! Move!

She closes the last few feet and tackles Andrew and Jonathan to the
ground just as the fireball slams into the earth where they were
standing. The impact and explosion knocks Xander and Dawn off their
feet. Xander slams into a gravestone, unconscious.

As Dawn struggles to her feet, the ground beneath her starts to fall
away. She starts to slip backward into the hole.

BUFFY
Dawn! Dawn, hold on!

Buffy reaches for her but it's too late. Dawn drops backward and falls
into an underground chamber. She lands on her back with a thud. Caskets
line the walls all around her, embedded in and protruding from the walls
of the cave.

Seconds later Buffy herself falls in and lands next to her sister. She
looks up and rolls to the side as Jonathan's sword falls straight for
her head. The sword misses her with inches to spare and embeds itself in
the ground. Andrew's sword slides in after it and lands at Buffy's feet
as well.

The girls look around warily, not sure what to make of the cave and its
bizarre contents. The hole the fell through yawns above them, 50 feet
overhead.

Above, Andrew and Jonathan get to their feet and peer down into the
hole, then look over to where Xander lies unconscious.

JONATHAN
(to Andrew)
Mexico, huh?

They share a look, then run off into the night.

CUT TO:

46 INT. THE MAGIC BOX- STORE- NIGHT 46

Anya makes her way through the wreckage out onto the main floor of the
store. She finds Giles lying unconscious and runs to him.

ANYA
Giles!

His eyes open.

GILES
Anya...

ANYA
I'm so sorry! Willow forced me to free her with her brain. Are you okay?

GILES
I can see.

ANYA
Oh. It's a... miracle.

GILES
Willow... I can see her. She took the magick I had and now I know where
she is. I can feel what... oh, god.

ANYA
Giles, you have to rest.

GILES
(smiles)
Silly girl. I'm dying.

ANYA
No, you're not!

GILES
It was... it was the only way. I thought there'd be a chance but... I
know where Willow is. She's going to finish it.

ANYA
Finish what?

GILES
The world.

CUT TO:

47 EXT. SUNNYDALE CEMETERY- DAWN 47

The sun rises, bathing the cemetery in a golden light.

CUT TO:

48 INT. SUNNYDALE CEMETERY- UNDERGROUND CAVE- DAY 48

Using roots as handholds, Buffy climbs the walls of the cave toward the
hole in the ceiling. One of the roots pulls free and Buffy crashes back
down onto an old casket, shattering the lid.

DAWN
Buffy!

Buffy gets up, nearly panicked, looking around desperately.

DAWN
Are you okay?

BUFFY
We have to get out of here. (yells) Xander!

DAWN
I think I saw him hit his head.

BUFFY
Xander!

No response. Buffy turns to one of the caskets embedded in the wall and
starts working it free.

DAWN
This looks a little like Spike's place. You know, under his crypt? What
are you doing?

BUFFY
If we can pull these out, we can use the coffins for height. Maybe get
out of here.

She picks up one of the swords and starts hacking at the dirt around the
edge of the coffin.

DAWN
Maybe one of the tunnels Spike uses is around here. We can use it to get
to his place.

BUFFY
That's the last place on earth we need to be.

DAWN
Oh. But it was good enough to take me there after what he did to you?

BUFFY
What he...?

DAWN
Tried to do. Whatever.

BUFFY
Xander...

DAWN
So it's true?

BUFFY
Dawn, you may not have noticed but we're in really big trouble here.

DAWN
Why did you not tell me?

BUFFY
Because you didn't need to know.

DAWN
Yes. I do. I need to know. I'm not a kid anymore.

BUFFY
Dawn, I'm trying to protect you.

DAWN
Well, you can't! Look around, Buffy. We're trapped in here. Willow's
killing and people I love keep dying. You cannot protect me from that.

BUFFY
Dawn...

XANDER
(o.s.)
Hello!

BUFFY
Xander!

XANDER
Buffy, you okay? Where's Dawn?

DAWN
Here. Are Jonathan and Andrew up there with you?

Xander looks around.

XANDER
Nah, they must have skedaddled when I was out. Weasels.

He leans farther over the edge and the dirt beneath his hands collapses.
He barely saves himself from falling also.

BUFFY
Xander, you got to find some kind of rope or something and get us out of
here!

XANDER
Right! Okay, I'll take a look around.

BUFFY
And hurry up before-

Anya suddenly appears in the cave with Buffy. She looks around herself,
shocked.

ANYA
Holy frijole.

BUFFY
Anya, what are you doing here? Where's Giles?

DAWN
Giles?

ANYA
He's still at the magick shop.

DAWN
(to Buffy)
Giles is back? You didn't tell me that.

Xander listens from above.

BUFFY
Did he stop Willow?

ANYA
No. And things just got a whole lot worse.

BUFFY
How worse?

ANYA
End of the world worse. Willow's going to destroy it.

DAWN
She can do that?

ANYA
She can and she will when she gets to where she's going.

BUFFY
Where is she going?

ANYA
Big old Satanic temple- Kingman's Bluff?

BUFFY
There's no temple on Kingman's Bluff.

CUT TO:

49 EXT. KINGMAN'S BLUFF- DAY 49

A cliff overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Suddenly the ground splits open
and a spire topped with an inverted Pentagram rises out up and into the
daylight. Willow stands a distance away, arms raised, bringing the
temple out of the ground toward her.

CUT TO:

50 INT. SUNNYDALE CEMETERY- UNDERGROUND CAVE- DAY 50

BUFFY
Proserpexa? Who's she?

ANYA
Way up there in the hierarchy of she-demons. Her followers intended to
use her effigy to destroy the world. They all died when the temple got
swallowed up in the big earthquake of '32.

BUFFY
So now 70 years later Willow's gonna make their dreams come true?

ANYA
She's going to drain the planet's life force and funnel its energy
through Proserpexa's effigy and burn the earth to a cinder.

BUFFY
Not if I can help it.

ANYA
You can't. Something else Giles said. No magick or supernatural force
can stop her.

BUFFY
What does that mean?

ANYA
I don't know. He said, "The Slayer can't stop her" and then he said a
bunch of other stuff. He really wasn't too clear.

BUFFY
Anya, what are you-

ANYA
Look, I should get back to him. He's alone.

BUFFY
Is he okay?

ANYA
I don't think he has a lot of time left. I'm sorry.

Anya disappears. Buffy and Dawn stand speechless for a moment, then
Buffy looks up and yells.

BUFFY
Xander! Where is that rope?

DAWN
Buffy...

BUFFY
Xander! Where is he?

DAWN
You heard what Anya said. You heard what Giles said.

BUFFY
I heard and I don't care. I have to try.

She bends down and lifts a coffin.

CUT TO:

51 EXT. KINGMAN'S BLUFF- DAY 51

The effigy of Proserpexa is mounted to the temple's spire. Willow stands
before it, her arms raised as she starts the doomsday spell.

WILLOW
From the Pit of Forgotten Shadows, awaken sister of the dark...

DISSOLVE TO:

52 INT. SUNNYDALE CEMETERY- UNDERGROUND CAVE- DAY 52

BUFFY
I'm not gonna just sit here while Willow incinerates what I'm chosen to
protect. I have to stop her.

DISSOLVE TO:

53 EXT. KINGMAN'S BLUFF- DAY 53

WILLOW
Always the Slayer... right to the last.

DISSOLVE TO:

54 INT. SUNNYDALE CEMETERY- UNDERGROUND CAVE- DAY 54

Buffy and Dawn drop the casket and look up, hearing Willow's words.

BUFFY
Willow?

DISSOLVE TO:

55 EXT. KINGMAN'S BLUFF- DAY 55

WILLOW
And it is the last, you know? For all your fighting, thinking you're
saving the world...

DISSOLVE TO:

56 INT. SUNNYDALE CEMETERY- UNDERGROUND CAVE- DAY 56

DAWN
Buffy?

Buffy holds up a hand to silence her.

DISSOLVE TO:

57 EXT. KINGMAN'S BLUFF- DAY 57

WILLOW
...and in the end, I'm the only one who can save it.

DISSOLVE TO:

58 INT. SUNNYDALE CEMETERY- UNDERGROUND CAVE- DAY 58

BUFFY
By killing us?

DISSOLVE TO:

59 EXT. KINGMAN'S BLUFF- DAY 59

WILLOW
It's the only way to stop the pain.

DISSOLVE TO:

60 INT. THE MAGIC BOX- DAY 60

Giles listens to her as well, Anya leaning over him, tending to his
injuries as best she can.

WILLOW
(v.o.)
I can't take it anymore. But I know you, Buffy.

DISSOLVE TO:

61 EXT. KINGMAN'S BLUFF- DAY 61

WILLOW
You're a warrior. You won't go out without a fight.

DISSOLVE TO:

62 INT. SUNNYDALE CEMETERY- UNDERGROUND CAVE- DAY 62

WILLOW
(v.o.)
I don't really have time for one.

DISSOLVE TO:

63 EXT. KINGMAN'S BLUFF- DAY 63

WILLOW
But you should go out fighting.

DISSOLVE TO:

64 INT. SUNNYDALE CEMETERY- UNDERGROUND CAVE- DAY 64

BUFFY
Willow, what are you-?

DISSOLVE TO:

65 EXT. KINGMAN'S BLUFF- DAY 65

WILLOW
It was me who took you out of the earth. Well, now... the earth wants
you back.

CUT TO:

66 INT. SUNNYDALE CEMETERY- UNDERGROUND CAVE- DAY 66

The cave walls start to tremble around Buffy and Dawn. Suddenly the tree
roots lining the walls spring to life, fully formed creatures with
pincers for hands. The rip themselves free of the dirt and attack the
two girls from all sides.

FADE OUT

ACT VIII

67 INT. SUNNYDALE CEMETERY- UNDERGROUND CAVE- DAY 67

Resume. Buffy picks up the sword and attacks the creatures, hacking,
slashing, punching and kicking. She manages to beat them back and stands
guard over Dawn as five more creatures awaken and pull themselves free
of the cave walls.

BUFFY
They'll just keep coming. I can't take them all. Dawn... will you help
me?

Buffy hands the sword to her sister who nods and accepts it.

DAWN
I got your back.

Buffy smiles at her reassuringly, then picks up the second sword and
charges, Dawn right behind her.

CUT TO:

68 EXT. KINGMAN'S BLUFF- DAY 68

With Buffy occupied, Willow is back to her doomsday spell.

WILLOW
Proserpexa, let the cleansing fires from the depths burn away the
suffering souls and bring sweet death.

Magickal energy starts to arc around Willow and between her and the
idol. Within seconds, the idol starts to glow white hot. The ground
begins to tremble and a vortex of black magick springs up around Willow.
She stands at center of the maelstrom, drawing in life energy from the
earth and focusing it into the idol in front of her.

CUT TO:

69 INT. THE MAGIC BOX- DAY 69

Anya sits with Giles as the store shakes and rumbles all around them.

CUT TO:

70 INT. SUNNYDALE CEMETERY- UNDERGROUND CAVE- DAY 70

Buffy dispatches another root creature, then ducks as chunks of the cave
rain down on her and Dawn.

BUFFY
Willow...

CUT TO:

71 INT. THE MAGIC BOX- DAY 71

Anya shields Giles from the raining debris. The rumbling stops for a
moment and she looks down at him. His eyes are closed and he's very
still.

ANYA
Giles! Giles, don't die. Not yet. There are things I want to tell you.
Thanks a lot for coming. It was good of you to teleport all this way-

The store starts shaking violently again.

ANYA
Though in retrospect it would have been better if you hadn't come and
given Willow all that magick that made her like ten times more powerful.
That would have been a plus.

CUT TO:

72 EXT. KINGMAN'S BLUFF- DAY 72

Energy streams from Willow into the idol as she drains the earth of its
life force.

Suddenly Xander steps into the energy stream, interposing himself
between Willow and the idol. The interruption causes Willow's energy
vortex to dissipate.

XANDER
Hey, black-eyed girl. Whatcha doing?

WILLOW
Get out of here.

XANDER
Oh, no. You're not the only one with powers, you know. You may be a
hopped-up über-witch but this carpenter can drywall you into the next
century.

WILLOW
I'm not joking, Xander. Get out of my way. Now!

She hurls a bolt of plasma at him and throws him backward into the
temple spire.

CUT TO:

73 INT. THE MAGIC BOX- DAY 73

Giles' eyes open.

GILES
There.

ANYA
What?

GILES
It's not over.

CUT TO:

74 INT. SUNNYDALE CEMETERY- UNDERGROUND CAVE- DAY 74

Dawn and Buffy fight for their lives. One of the creatures knocks Dawn's
sword from her hand and slashes her arm with its claw. Buffy sees her
sister go down and calls out to her.

BUFFY
Dawn! I'm coming!

Before Buffy can get there, Dawn leaps up, fire in her eyes, and
backflips under the beasts flailing arms. She rolls to her feet, sword
in hand and with one fluid motion, impales the creature with her blade.
She rips the sword free and swings it around in a deadly arc, separating
the creature's head from its body.

Buffy stares at her younger sister in shock.

DAWN
(smiles)
What? You think I never watched you?

All around them the walls come to life again as a new round of creatures
pull themselves free of the dirt. Buffy and Dawn stand back to back,
swords flashing as they fight side by side.

CUT TO:

75 EXT. KINGMAN'S BLUFF- DAY 75

Willow's energy vortex swirls to life again and she funnels it into the
idol in a great glowing stream.

Xander comes to at the base of the spire and stands up, his body cutting
off the energy stream once again.

WILLOW
You can't stop this!

XANDER
Yeah, I get that. It's just where else am I gonna go? You've been my
best friend my whole life. World gonna end... where else would I want to
be?

WILLOW
Is this the master plan? You're going to stop me by telling me you love
me?

XANDER
Well, I was gonna walk you off a cliff and hand you an anvil but it
seemed kinda cartoony.

WILLOW
Still making jokes.

XANDER
I'm not joking. I know you're in pain. I can't imagine the pain you're
in. And I know you're about to do something apocalyptically evil and
stupid and hey, I still wanna hang. You're Willow.

WILLOW
Don't call me that.

XANDER
The first day of kindergarten you cried because you broke the yellow
crayon and you were too afraid to tell anyone. You've come pretty far-
ending the world not a terrific notion- but the thing is, yeah, I love
you. I love crayon-breaky Willow and I love scary-veiny Willow so if I'm
going out, it's here. If you want to kill the world... well, then start
with me. I've earned that.

WILLOW
You think I won't?

XANDER
It doesn't matter. I'll still love you.

WILLOW
Shut up.

She rakes her hand through the air and deep bloody gashes appear in
Xander's cheek.

XANDER
I love you.

She does it again, this time ripping through his shirt and digging deep
lacerations across his chest. He doubles over, gasping in pain. With
great effort, he straightens up and faces her again.

XANDER
I... love you.

WILLOW
Shut up!

She extends her hand and shoots a plasma bolt at him but it dissipates
almost instantly, barely affecting him. He staggers toward her as she
looks down at her hands, confused and panicked.

XANDER
I love you, Willow.

WILLOW
Stop!

She tries to blast him again but this time the result is nothing but a
few feeble sparks.

XANDER
I love you.

WILLOW
Stop!

Tears stream down her face as Xander reaches her. She beats against his
chest as he wraps her up in a hug. She collapses to the ground with
great heaving sobs as Xander holds her.

XANDER
I love you.

As she cries against his shoulder, a wave passes over her. Her hair
shifts from black to its normal red, the black veins disappear from her
skin and her eyes shift back to their natural state. Xander's own
injuries disappear as well.

CUT TO:

76 INT. SUNNYDALE CEMETERY- UNDERGROUND CAVE- DAY 76

The root monsters surrounding Buffy and Dawn crumble to dust.

DAWN
What happened?

CUT TO:

77 EXT. KINGMAN'S BLUFF- DAY 77

Willow clings desperately to Xander, crying so hard she can barely
breathe.

CUT TO:

78 INT. THE MAGIC BOX- DAY 78

Anya sits on the counter, head in her hands, waiting for the inevitable.
Giles suddenly sits up, his injuries healed. Anya runs over to him in
shock.

ANYA
Giles! You're not dead!

GILES
No...

He gasps as she throws her arms around him in an enthusiastic hug.

GILES
However I'm still in some pain.

ANYA
Well, why aren't you dead? Why aren't I dead?

GILES
The threat's gone. Willow's been stopped.

ANYA
Oh. You mean she's...

GILES
No, she's alive. The magick she took from me, it did what I'd hoped it
would do.

ANYA
Oh... you dosed her. You knew she'd take your powers all along.

GILES
The gift that was given me by the coven was the true essence of magick.
Willow's magick came from a place of rage and power.

ANYA
And vengeance. Don't forget vengeance.

GILES.
No. How could I? In any case, the magick she took from me tapped into
the spark of humanity she had left, helped her to feel again. Gave
Xander the opportunity to reach her.

ANYA
Xander?

GILES
Yes. It was he who got to her in time. He saved us all.

Despite herself, Anya can't help but smile.

CUT TO:

79 INT. SUNNYDALE CEMETERY- UNDERGROUND CAVE- DAY 79

Buffy sits down, the implication sinking in.

DAWN
I... think it's over, Buffy. We're all still here.

Buffy breaks down into tears.

DAWN
(sarcastic)
Sorry to disappoint you. (beat) Wait. Is that happy crying?

BUFFY
Yes, dummy! You think I wanted the world to end?

DAWN
I don't know. Didn't you?

BUFFY
Dawn... I'm so sorry.

She stands up and hugs her sister.

BUFFY
(tearful)
I'm sorry.

DAWN
It's okay, Buffy. It's okay.

BUFFY
No, it hasn't been. It hasn't been okay. But it's going to be now. I see
it.

DAWN
See what?

BUFFY
You. Things have really sucked lately. That's all going to change and I
want to be there when it does. I want to see my friends happy again. I
want to see you grow up, the woman you're going to become. Because she's
going to be beautiful and she's going to be powerful. Dawn, I've got it
so wrong. I don't want to protect you from the world. I want to show it
to you. There's so much that I want to show you.

Dawn and Buffy embrace again, both of them crying now.

DISSOLVE TO:

80 EXT. SUNNYDALE CEMETERY- DAY 80

Buffy hauls herself out of the hole up into the daylight, then reaches
down and pulls Dawn up after her.

DISSOLVE TO:

81 EXT. KINGMAN'S BLUFF- DAY 81

Xander continues to comfort a sobbing Willow high up on the bluff
overlooking the blue water of the Pacific.

DISSOLVE TO:

82 INT. THE MAGIC BOX- DAY 82

Anya helps Giles to his feet and they both make their way out of the
wreckage of the store into the daylight.

DISSOLVE TO:

83 EXT. CALIFORNIA FREEWAY- SOUTHBOUND- DAY 83

The driver of a big rig looks over at Jonathan and Andrew sitting in the
cab next to him and smiles suggestively.

DISSOLVE TO:

83 EXT. SUNNYDALE CEMETERY- DAY 83

Buffy and Dawn walk through the cemetery, arm-in-arm, taking in the
beauty of the day and the flowering trees all around them.

CUT TO:

84 INT. SENEGAL, AFRICA- DEMON CAVE- DAY 84

Spike lies unconscious on the floor of the cave as the demon's footsteps
approach.

DEMON
You have endured the required trials.

Spike's eyes open and he rolls over and sits up with a groan.

SPIKE
Bloody right I have. So you give me what I want. Make me what I was so
Buffy can get what she deserves.

DEMON
Very well. We will return your soul.

The demon places his claw against Spike's chest as a flash of blinding
white light illuminates Spike's body from within and he screams in agony.

FADE TO BLACK
