Joss Whedon Comments On The Potential For A Giles-Centered Buffy Spinoff
Author: Kelly West

Joss Whedon’s been busy delivering some of his creative talent to feature
films these days, with the upcoming Whedon-directed Avengers film set to hit
theaters next month. When our own Eric Eisenberg spoke to Whedon earlier
this month, the Buffy the Vampire Slayer creator told him he “absolutely
wants” to go back to television.

Of course, there’s the matter of the time commitment that comes with such a
venture, and his already busy schedule. But if he were to return to TV,
would a Ripper series be a possibility? (Via Blastr) AV Club spoke to Whedon
recently, and the subject of a Buffy spinoff series that focused on her
once-watcher Rupert Giles (Anthony Stewart Head) came up, and apparently the
idea for the spinoff hasn’t faded from Whedon’s mind.

"Oh yeah, totally. [Laughs.] No, the thing about Ripper—the essence of it—is
that the BBC came to me at one point like, “It doesn’t have to be Ripper. It
can just be [Anthony Stewart Head], and there’s magic, and he’s Tony, cuz he’s
awesome.” And that’s the thing: For some reason, he keeps getting sexier
every year. That’s not happening to me! I’m like, “What are you doing?” And
that story was always about a mature guy who’s lived, and about the choices
he’s made. So you could make that now, or you could make it 10 years from
now. And I’ve tortured Tony more than any other living human with, “We’re
definitely gonna do this!” Because I thought we were. He’s working so much,
though, I’d feel too guilty. But that’s the thing with Ripper: It doesn’t go
away in my head because he’s still right for it, and he could still bring
it."

The problem with the Ripper series is that Angel killed him at the end of Season 8 (graphic novels).

Joss says the Season 8 & Season 9 comics are canon.

But he also says they won't count if he gets to make a Buffy film.

You could fit the number of people who read the comics in a single
stadium.

You could fit the number of people who actually cared about the comic
in single room.

And you could fit the only person who ever truly believed the comics
are canon - Joss Whedon - in a single box.

News flash, Joss: Your pathetic attempt to continue BtVS via graphic
novels failed. Abysmally. In fact, it redefined the words "epic
fail." I strongly suggest that you put down the crack pipe or
whatever it is that you are smoking and cut your losses by admitting
it.

Numbers don't determine cannot, creators do.

If you read my post he really doesn't.

I don't think he can hear you.

I don't think you know what "epic fail" means. Season 9 is Dark
Horse's biggest seller, ATM.

Joss has also said that he always reserves the right to have a better idea.
He has never let continuity get in the way of telling (in his opinion) a
good story.

It would have to be a very large stadiutm. Most NFL football stadiums are
too small. All MLB baseball stadiums are too small. There are a couple of
college football stadiums which might work (season 8's readership was just
over 100K).

It would need to be a largish room. If you believe that only one in a
thousand cares, that's still over a hundred people.

There's a lot more than one person who believed that season 8 was canon,
and I'd agree with Duggy (the howwow, the howwow) that Whedon wasn't one of
them.

Define 'fail'. Economically the comics are a huge success for Whedon, and
for Dark Horse.

That was my point. Joss has a history of lying to fans, so it is
wise to take everything he says with a grain or two of salt.

That is for the entire season, correct? According to
http://www.angelfire.com/tv2/buffytvs5/nielsenratings.html, "I Was
Made to Love You" was the lowest rated episode ever and yet more than
900,000 people still watched it. The average rating seems to be
between one and two million viewers although I have not run the
numbers. (Math was never my forte.)

A single banquet hall would probably suffice.

If we must quibble, then let me clarify it by amending it as "one
person of any significance." I never understood why Whedon tried to
continue the series when he had a wealth of material from the
Buffyverse to work with. There have been thousands of Slayers in the
history of the Buffyverse--any one of whose story could have been
profitably explored in a graphic novel.

I was referring to Whedon's pathetic attempt to continue the
series via a different medium (in this case a graphic novel.) The
fact is that for most people BtVS ended when the TV show ended. Only
a small fraction of the hardcore fans bought or read the comics. The
same story cannot be told in two different media. There are hundreds
of Star Trek and Star Wars novels, many of which were written with the
tacit blessing of the franchises, and yet that is not what the typical
fan has in mind when either is mentioned. Ask someone if they have
heard of "Star Wars" and they will think of the movies. Mention "Star
Trek" and people will think of either the television series or
possibly the movies. Utter the words "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and
people will think of the television series. That will not change
however much Whedon or others may wish otherwise.

Per issue. TPB would add to that.

TV does better than comics. Not sure what your point is.

Can and have. But that doesn't drag in readers like a continuation.

Which was a success in that medium's terms. It was never going to be
equal to the TV show in terms of success.

> The fact is that for most people BtVS ended when the TV show ended.

True. So?

True. So?

Happens all the time.

Who says he wishes otherwise?

He wished for a successful comic.

He got one.
