The actor who played Doyle was a drug addict. He was doing drugs
while working on "Angel," and Joss fired him. They covered it up,
as they always do in these cases, by saying that the actor wanted
to move on to new challenges, blah, blah, blah ... He continued to
do drugs, and recently died of an overdose.
Joss had no intention of writing the character of Doyle out of the
show, he just had no choice. Since Wesley was a much more
interesting character, it worked out well for everyone concerned
(except for the ex-Doyle).
Though the "official" explanation is that Joss wanted to shake things up by
killing off one of the lead characters.

Wow, I thought it was because his character wasn't well received or key to
the show, I know I didn't care for the character and was glad to see the
'rogue vamper' hunter fill his spot
The way I heard it was that they always meant to write off Doyle and
bring in Wesley because Joss was in love with the idea of killing off a
main character, for the shock value. However, Glenn Quinn's drug abuse
forced them to swing the axe a little bit sooner then planned.

not true. he planned in the beginning to kill someone major, to shake
things up. And Doyle was the likely choice. but then he changed his
mind and was thinking he would keep the character around.
But when Glenn started acting up on set (showing up late, forgetting
his lines because he hadn't really studied them, showing up hungover
and yes sometimes stoned), Joss recanted on the previous recanting and
decided to stick with the original plan and kill Doyle.

I don't recall what I was told at the time about the timing, but I
think you are correct. I believe the original plan was to have the
killing a few weeks later (maybe around mid season). But in the end, it
was actually perfect because the relationships were just starting to
get cemented, rather than being firmly rooted, so no one got pissed
that they took an ep and a half and were pretty much over it.
even tho Glenn Quinn Doyle did drugs he shouldnt have been written out.. now
the show sucks.....and wesley sucks the lump on my dogs ass , when will he
fucking die?
another reason i am hating joss...he killed jessie, tara and doyle, my favorite
