2) What is alt.tv.buffy-v-slayer?

alt.tv.buffy-v-slayer is an unmoderated newsgroup devoted to
"Buffy the Vampire Slayer," BtVS. As well, anything having to do with the
show "Angel" or any of the actors in either series that is some way
relates to BTVS. It is a place for discussion, not a place to post
pictures, or fan fiction. The place to post fanfic is
alt.tv.buffy-v-slayer.creative. There is at least one binaries newsgroup.
alt.tv.buffy-v-slayer.multimedia.

There is a Buffy search engine site, http://www.buffysearch.com.

There are other Buffy newsgroups, such as
uk.media.tv.buffy-v-slayer, and alt.tv.angel. As well as fan newsgroups.
Your best bet to find them if they are not on your ISP is to go to
deja.com and search there.

All posts dealing *only* with "Angel" TV show subject matter
and/or topics are considered "off-topic" for alt.tv.buffy-v-slayer. If you
are going to post (or crosspost) something that is in some way connected,
or relevant, to BTVS and "Angel", then please do so. But people in
alt.tv.buffy-v-slayer may redirect any posting considered off-topic by
removing the xposting (if there is one) and/or putting alt.tv.angel in the
"followups-to" header. Any responses will be automatically sent to ata.

Pictures and fan fiction are not appropriate due to the nature of
this group which caters to a wide variety of fans: who may find binary
(picture) files and long fan fiction posts to be expensive due to the way
they access the internet -- both in actual monitory cost and in wasted
time do to slow connections. As for binaries, you don't post binaries to
a non-binary newsgroup. Some news servers can't handle binaries all that
well, and they may drop a newsgroup if there are too many. Finally, as
there are several binary newsgroups associated with the series, so if you
feel that you must post a binary, post it in one of those newsgroups, and
post a message in this group saying, "Hey, I just posted [description of
binary] on [name of binary ng].This means no MP3 files of the theme, no
jpg of SMG at the Emmy Award program, and no doc files of your "work". If
you can't put it in plain text, don't put it here. And yes, that means no
html. If you have something that you think might be of interest, put it on
your web page and post the address here. Or, if you must, post it in
alt.tv.buffy-v-slayer.multimedia.

Second, we occasionally get people connected with the series to
post here. The most notable of these have been former stunt coordinator
Jeff Pruitt and composer Chris Beck. We're hoping to get more of the cast
and crew to post here from time to time, but if people start posting
fanfic here, those connected with the series will have to stay away for
legal reasons.

2.1) So where can I post binaries or see them?

alt.binaries.multimedia.buffy-v-slayer (ABMBVS) was specifically
created for this purpose. Please read the ABMBVS FAQ before posting.
Copies can be found at:

http://www.geocities.com/btvsfaq/abmbvs-faq.txt

2.2) Where can I find pictures, sounds, clips, etc of the cast or
show?

The first place to look is a search engine. Pretty much
everything you could ever want is on the net already, please take the time
to look before you ask the newsgroup. If that fails, post your request in
alt.binaries.multimedia.buffy-v-slayer, if your newserver carries it. If
not you may post your request here, but please don't ask for it to be
filled in alt.tv.buffy-v-slayer.

There are many sites the people personally create so check out the
sig files of people as well.

3) What do we talk about here?

This newsgroup is for anything having to do with the show Buffy
the Vampire Slayer.

4) *IMPORTANT* Please use spoiler space

Not everyone has the time to watch every show as it comes out. As
with early feeds to stations and later viewing in different countries,
some people may not have seen the most recent episodes. So please respect
that by giving warnings and not listing plot points in the header.

4.1) What is a spoiler?

A spoiler is information about the content of an episode. Some
people don't want to hear ahead of time what's going to happen during an
episode, because it will spoil the episode's impact.

Spoilers can be major, revealing important plot points or major
changes in characters or situations, or minor, just giving away some minor
detail about the episode. (A major spoiler for the Star Wars trilogy
would be that Darth Vader is Luke's father. A minor spoiler would be that
the rebels are hiding out on an ice planet at the start of the second
movie.)

Episodes air on different days in Canada, the USA and
internationally, where some countries are a season or more behind, so it's
difficult to decide just how long after an episode airs you would need to
wait before you can skip the spoilers. Most TV groups use either the
second rerun of an episode, or the start of the next season in the USA.

Because some people are more sensitive about spoilers than others,
the safest policy is to avoid revealing anything about an episode without
giving fair warning to anyone who hasn't seen that episode yet. That means
no spoilers in the the header. Be sure that people take this very serious,
to the point of kill filing people over their lack of spoilers.

Spoiler space, or spoiler protection, is a way of warning people
about spoilers before they read them. The standard format is to identify
what episode you'll be discussing in the Subject heading, then again in
the first line of the message. This is because some people's browsers
show the header prominently, but others don't. Then you leave 25-30 lines
with one or two characters each (we'd say blank lines, but some mailers
delete long blank sections) so that the spoilers won't be on the first
page of the message, because some people read too fast and might see some
spoiler info before the warning sinks in.

Spoiler protection might seem weird at first, but it's considered
basic nettiquette and you'll get used to it fast, and even learn to
appreciate it. If you don't use it, you'll alienate a lot of people
unnecessarily. So be polite and everyone will stay friends!

4.2) Any other hints?

-Stay on topic... try to stay on topic...
-Do not feed the Trolls
-Do not flame other people... (Wishing and hoping...)
-Try to be polite and respect one another
-Trim out the parts of a post you are responding to that are not
immediately relevant to your response. For instance, never, ever, quote
all 471 lines of a posting to add a two line response. This would be good
advice for the not-so-newbies as well. Some of the ones who seem to do
this most often are long-time reulars who should know better.

-Do not post test messages here. They belong in alt.test

Magazine

The magazine is published four times a year -- bimonthly during
the TV season. I'm not completely certain, but I think the only way you
can subscribe is by joining the official BTVS Fan Club. Membership is
$29.95 a year, and includes 4 issues of the magazine, as well as a bunch
of other stuff. The magazine is published by MVP Media, who also publish
Cinescape and the official magazine for The X-Files. Individual issues
are $5.95, and each issue has two different covers. MVP/Cinescape also
published a BTVS Official Yearbook last fall (not to be confused with the
Sunnydale High Yearbook). There are a couple of reprints from the BTVS
magazine, a couple of updated articles, and some new articles. The episode
guide is also updated through season 3.

The British Buffy magazine is published by Titan Publishing.
(According to the ads in Titan's other magazines, the British Buffy
magazine is available in the UK, Eire, Australia, and New Zealand.) Some
of Titan's magazines are available here in the US, such as the XENA
magazine and MANGA MAX, a manga/anime magazine. Titan's Buffy magazine is
published monthly, but is currently unavailable in the US.

Issue #8 (Spring 2000) of the BTVS magazine is on the stands! The
interviews in this issue are with NB and Amber Benson. The "Hall Pass"
section features a look at Giles's flat, and there is a comprehensive list
of the demons that have appeared on Buffy and Angel. This is also the last
issue of the magazine for the season. Issue #9 will be on sale sometime
in October, and the 2000 BTVS yearbook will be on sale September 26.

Comics:

Dark Horse Comics publishes comic versions of both Buffy and
Angel, monthly, with two covers for each issue -- one cover is art by
whoever the current art team is, the other is a photo cover. The comics
are original stories, although Dark Horse did publish a mini-series of
Buffy's origin as the Slayer. This was more or less an adaptation of the
movie, but using the origional script JW had in mind. There have also been
a few one-shots, including a Spike & Dru story that was written by James
Marsters.

7) What are the Watcher Guides?

Christopher Golden and Nancy Holder, The Watcher's Guide. Pocket
Books, 1998. (14$ US, 20 Can.) This is the best IMHO. A second edition
should be out next fall. This is the official guide to BTVS.

N. E. Genge, The Buffy Chronicals. Three Rivers Press, 1998. (15$
US, 20 Can.) An Ok version.

Kathleen Tracy, The Girl's Got Bite. Renaissance Books, 1998.
(14.95$ US, 21$ Can.) A total waste of your money.

Ted Edwards, BUFFY X-POSED. Prima Publishing, 1998. (US $16.00,
Can $21.95) Unauthorized bio of SMG; episode guide for S1 and S2. Also
has short bios of the rest of the cast and JW.

Nikki Stafford, Bite Me!: Sarah Michelle Gellar And Buffy The
Vampire Slayer. ECW Press, $16.95. Somewhat lengthy bio of SMG, shorter
bios of the rest of the cast, episode guide for seasons 1 and 2. Almost
reads like an academic work at times, since Stafford constantly quotes her
sources, and there is a fairly extensive bibliography at the end of the
book.

8) Is BUFFY available on videotape?

North America:

In 1998, 20th Century Fox released a videotape collection called
"The Slayer Pack" containing six episodes from Season One for $39.98.
The content - which includes one press-on Buffy tattoo - follows:

TAPE 1: Welcome to the Hellmouth/The Harvest
TAPE 2: The Witch/Never Kill a Boy on the First Date
TAPE 3: Angel/The Puppet Show

On 11 January 2000, 20th Century Fox released a second set of
videotapes called the "Buffy & Angel Chronicles" for the same price.

TAPE 1: Surprise/Innocence
TAPE 2: Passions/I Only Have Eyes for You
TAPE 3: Becoming (Part 1)/Becoming (Part 2)

The original BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER movie starring Kristy
Swanson is also available on video for around $10.

For the UK

It seems that they do not have the same re broadcasts as North
America does, so they do not have that market to replay old shows. There
are box sets of all season one, and season 2. Season 3 1-11 is also now
available as a boxed set of 3 tapes.

The Season 1 box set came out originally in a limited numbered
edition. Due to its success (it sold out), more boxes were made,
unnumbered. Today, one can buy either the box set or each of the tapes
seperately (three of them, each containing four episodes).

SMG - Sarah Michelle Gellar (Buffy)
(T)PTB - (The) Powers That Be
WC - Watchers' Council

10) What is the term "*" mean?

10.1) Who is the "Scooby Gang" and "Slayerettes."

This is a reference to the gang as a whole who help Buffy out with
research and fighting the bad guys. Willow, Xander, Giles represent the
core of the group, but at times Cordelia, Angel, Anya, Oz, Wesley and
Faith may have also been considered part of the group. It is ever changing
with the series. It refers to a cartoon Scooby Doo. Years past, this
Saturday morning show had a group of people solving ghost, vampire and
werewolf problems. Usually done by the hero a Great Dane named Scooby Doo.

10.2) "Shipper"

It is a newsgroup slang for a fan or a proponent of a relationSHIP
between two characters on a show. On Buffy, unless two other characters
are mentioned, a shipper probably refers to a Buffy/Angel shipper.
Initials are sometimes used as a shorthand them as in B/A shippers. There
are shippers of all kinds such as Buffy/Angel, Buffy/Xander and
Xander/Willow shippers, to name but a few of them.

10.3) What does Faith mean with the term "5 by 5"?

This is an army, ham radio, commercial freq. unit (or anything
else more powerful than a Power Rangers walkie talkie,:^) expression. It
refers to the signal strength meter on CB's and portable/amateur radios.
When you were receiving a signal there was a meter with 5 graduations on
it and it would move to indicate the strength of the incoming signal. As
such when someone contacts another by radio, if they hear the person loud
and clear they are 5 by 5, four by five, all the way to 1 by five is a
lesser level of loudness. With a 1 by 5, you can barely hear the other
site and cannot really make out what they are saying. It would be barely
audible, but clear ie no static. The first number is how loud the signal
is, the second is how clear, hence the phrase loud and clear. Not sure if
it goes down to 1 or 0, but at 0, though you'd probably never actually say
they were 0, how would you know they were speaking at all? People will
frequently ask for a "radio check" to see how well they were transmitting.
If you received the signal and your meter read "5" you would respond "I
read you 5x5" as the same as "loud an clear". a strong static free signal
and your voice is coming through clearly. 3 X 5 would mean that they can
understand you, but there's some static. 5 X 3 would mean that there's no
static, but your voice is somewhat muffled.

The last word on this goes to Willow:

Tara: what does she mean by this.
Willow: that's the thing, no one knows...

10.4) Fanwank

A fanwank is an explanation made up by fans to cover something
left unexplained by the creators, or to cover up an seeming inconsistancy
in the stories.

11) Who is who again? The Major Characters:

Buffy Summers - Sarah Michelle Gellar
(Alexander) Xander La Velle Harris - Nicholas Brendon
Willow Rosenberg - Alyson Hannigan
Cordelia Chase - Charisma Carpenter
Rupert Giles - Anthony Stewart Head
Liam "Angel" - David Boreanaz
Daniel "Oz" Osborne - Seth Green
Spike - James Marsters
Drusilla - Juliet Landau.
Principal Snyder - Armin Shimerman
Jenny Calendar - Robia LaMorte
Joyce Summers - Kristine Sutherland
Hank Summers -- Dean Butler
Ethan Rayne - Robin Sachs
Faith - Eliza Dushku
The Mayor, Richard Wilkins III - Harry Groener.
Allen Francis Doyle - Glenn Quinn
Anya - Emma Caulfield
Riley Finn - Marc Blucas
Professor Maggie Walsh - Lindsay Crouse
Parker Abrams - Adam Kaufman
Harmony - Mercedes McNab
Wesley Wyndham-Pryce - Alexis Denishof
Kate Lockley - Elizabeth Rohm
Tara - Amber Benson

12) What about the Movie?

Yes there was a movie of the same name. JW wrote the script but
was not in control of the film. The final version is different from what
JW thought it should be. As such, a great film but not necessarily the
canon for the show. You can see his original story for the film in the
comic book version of it. The title of this three-part comic book story is
"The Origin".

Or as David M. Sueme would say:

The first version of the "Buffy" concept surfaced as a "B" movie
in 1992, with Kristy Swanson as Buffy, Luke Perry as "Pike" (a
proto-Xander), and veteran "B" actors Donald Sutherland and Rutger Hauer
as the Watcher and chief vampire antagonist, respectively. After the
launch of the Fox/WB "Buffy" TV series, creator JW has tried to disavow
the movie on the grounds that commerce interfered with his creative
vision. However, a reading of the supposedly truer "novelization of the
[original] script" (available at the official www.buffy.com website) does
not entirely support this contention. The "novelization" is rather "camp"
but too short to serve as the basis for even the abbreviated "Buffy" movie
- essentially, more "camp" elements were added to fill the script out to
running time. The mechanics of slaying and the creation of vampires
differ in detail, and the television version has added "demons" as extra
antagonists. However, metaphorically, the "Buffy" movie proceeded to a
"mature and assume responsibility" stance - television BtVS arrived there
by the beginning of the third season ("Anne"). It is plausible from this
perspective to characterize the television version as a more elaborate and
leisurely retelling of the original tale.

13) Does Sarah really do her own fighting? She looks so much
bigger when she's fighting.

Sophia Crawford does Buffy's fighting stunts, according to former
Stunt Coordinator Jeff Pruitt. Sophia was the stunt double for the Pink
Ranger on Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, hence the line in the second
season referring to "Pink Ranger." She was also the stunt double for the
Pink and Yellow Rangers in the first Power Ranger movie.

14) Why is it that some people bitten by a vampire turn into one
but others don't.

Buffy: To make you a vampire they have to suck your blood. And
then you have to suck their blood. It's like a whole big sucking thing.
Mostly they're just gonna kill you. Why am I still talking to you?

Giles confirms that the last demon to walk the earth fed upon a
human, and turned him into a vampire. This demonic force is transmitted to
a person who has been drained by the vampire and then drinks their blood
in return.
(From Welcome to the Hellmouth)

15) You can find another more detailed FAQ that deals more with
the mythology of the show at http://www.sentex.ca/~cory/PETW/faq.html

Unfortunately, as it is copyrighted to Cory, it cannot be reposted
here. Cory is off line, attempts to email him have bounced back. To avoid
this happening again, i have added a copyright notice at the end of this
FAQ for the future.

15.1) An unofficial alt.fan.hannigan FAQ for those interested in
following Alysons career is posted to alt.fan.hannigan fortnightly, and
there is a html version at

http://www.lurker.freeserve.co.uk/afh/faq.html

The faq contains a brief Alyson biography, film and TV credits,
and links to the major Alyson websites. I hope this will be of interest
to a.t.b-v-s readers.

16) Hey, is Traci Lords going to be on the show?

This is an "in" joke of the group. The answer is no.

17) Why doesn't the CoW make someone else the Slayer?

The CoW does not make, or even choose, the Slayer. Their purpose
is to find the girls who have the potential to become Slayer and prepare
her for the job. They missed Buffy, who became the Chosen One without any
warning or preparation. A watcher found her after she had already gained
her powers.

18) Why do you always capitalize the word Slayer?

Because Slayer is the title of the position which refers to a
single, specific girl*, like when you refer to the President of the United
States, it is capitalized. If I refer to all the slayers on death row in
Texas, I do not use the capital. _Buffy_ should properly be referred to as
_Buffy, the Slayer_ instead of _Buffy, the Vampire Slayer_, but it had to
be simplified for Hollywood producers and network executives to
understand.

19) What's that ring Angel gave to Buffy and also wears?

Its Claddagh (pronounced Claw-dah). If you wear it with the crown
pointed to the end of your finger then it means that your heart is open.
If you wear it pointed to your hand then your heart is closed. It is a
faith ring, to show your faith to one person or open to finding such a
faith. The hands are there to show friendship. The heart is there for
love. The crown is for loyalty.

20) Is there a Buffy Video Game?

Fox Interactive has announced that Buffy the Vampire Slayer will
be coming to PlayStation, Sega Dreamcast, and PC CD-ROM in a 3D game will
take you to all of Buffy's favorite haunts, including Sunnydale High, the
cemetery and the Bronze. The game is scheduled for a Fall 2000 release
but has now been delayed... (not a good omen!)

21) Any news on syndication

Fox sold Buffy to its cable station FX and syndication is
estimated to begin between August and October of 2001. It is also being
marketed to local broadcast stations probably for two weekend airings
starting around the same time.

22) Why?

Because.

23) Am I the only one who...

No. Other people do or think the same thing.

24) Does anyone else ...

No. That is sick, really, really sick. Not only does no one else,
but people who even talk about it get locked away for their own
