Depth. The series doesn't always have time to cover issues or aspects
of different characters, especially villains or minor folks, in detail
and/or Mr. Whedon and his writers aren't particularly interested in
covering some issues or character aspects. Fan-fic fills that gap.
POVs. I love seeing the series or an episode or a theme told from
another pov, including that of the villain or a minor character.
Timewise the series can't always do it and/or the Whedon gang isn't
that interested. Fan-fic to the rescue.
There's more but not nearly enough time. Thanks to all the writers for
giving me something to think about and brightening my day.
I stayed out of the other thread on purpose. That question gets bounced
around at least once a year here. this one I will gladly join.
For me it's this:
Story Continuation. When it's done right, it's a cool way to keep the
adventure and the relationships on the show going, even long after the
series has left the air.
New Character Focus. What you said about POV, I will second. Reading a fic
from a minor or new characters POV that wasn't seen on the show is a lot of
fun. Especially if that character has inside info or a unique perspective
that they (the other char in the ep) don't. Plus, it's fun to see a
character that I thought was cool, but he/she did not get enough airtime,
become the focus of a story.
Unusual/Impossible Marriages. Known under the more common name of
*CROSSOVERS*. It's a way to bring two, or more, of my beloved shows,
movies, and/or comics together in the same time and space. Put Buffy and
Willow in the same room as O'Neal, Carter, and T'elic then add the Fantastic
Four and Spiderman and just imagine the possibilities. You've got one hell
of an epic story just waiting to happen.
I'll quit now. That crossover idea made me a little giddy.

90 to 95 % figure does not apply, and the percentage of illegible

in terms of plausibility of plot and faithfulness to the characters.
Hopefully you thanked them. I would assume they write because they
enjoy it, regardless.
But my thanks for the time and effort to your 90-95% in any case. I'd
bet I've enjoyed a few of them more than the others.

How 'bout some links?

Ooh, give me some titles!
http://www.fanfiction.net/u/737803/
I've identified twenty stories to date, but some of these have
dead-ended, some are not necessarily the BEST fanfic out there but
struck a chord with me. But, as was my original point, IMHO most of
these are better than some books that have managed to make it to print
with Joss Whedon's endorsement.
Thanks. Can't say I was blown away by the six I read but they were ok.
I still think I've read better among your 90-95%. Sad though to think
the print-published stuff is no better but I'll have to peek through
some of it on my next bookstore hunt. But thanks again for the link.
