Man, teen sent for trial over Lockyer killing
By PETER HARDWICK
Two Brisbane people were yesterday committed to stand trial for the
Christmas Eve murder of Toowoomba man Kenneth Walter Doig.
At the completion of their committal hearing yesterday, magistrate
Miss Barbara Tynan found Daniel Michael Hallin, 22, and a 16-year-old
girl (who as a juvenile cannot be named) both had a case to answer.
Miss Tynan committed both to stand trial in the Supreme Court at a
date to be set by the Department of Public Prosecutions.
Neither accused was required to enter pleas to the charges of murder,
two counts of attempted murder, grievous bodily harm, robbery, and
unlawfully using a motor vehicle.
The pair's co-accused, Peter Noel Stephens, 20, had earlier in the
hearing been committed to stand trial on the same charges and a
further charge of serious assault.
All three have been remanded in custody.
The Crown alleges Kenneth Doig was murdered at James Norman Hedges
Park, Helidon, late on Christmas Eve, his body wrapped in plastic and
his car taken from the scene.
It is further alleged that Mr Doig's twin brother Brett and mother
Helen both were shot when they stopped on Murphys Creek Road after
recognising Kenneth Doig's car on the side of the road.
Hallin's counsel, Mr Brendan Ryan, had argued no admissible evidence
had been put before the committal hearing on which his client should
be committed to trial apart, perhaps, on the charge of unlawful use of
a motor vehicle.
Barrister Mr Robbie Davies, for the teenage girl, submitted his client
should not be committed for trial on the second set of alleged
circumstances, which he dubbed "phase two'', relating to the alleged
shooting of Brett Doig and his mother.
Mr Davies did concede that there was some evidence, though thin, on
which his client could be committed to trial on "phase one'', the
alleged incidents at the Helidon park.

Girl, 17, pleads guilty to Doig murder
A 17-year-old Brisbane girl yesterday pleaded guilty to the Christmas Eve
2001 murder of Kenneth Walter Doig at Helidon.
The girl, who was a juvenile at the time and so cannot be named, pleaded
guilty before Justice Muir in the Supreme Court in Toowoomba.
Crown prosecutor Mr Brendan Campbell said that as the accused was to be
dealt with by the court as a juvenile and a detention order appeared the
only sentencing option, a pre-sentence report would be required.
Justice Muir adjourned the matter to the next sittings of the Supreme Court
in Toowoomba in March and remanded the girl in custody.
The Crown alleges Kenneth Doig was murdered at Helidon's James Norman Hedges
Park late on Christmas Eve, 2001, his body wrapped in plastic and his car
driven from the scene.
It is further alleged that Mr Doig's twin brother Brett and his mother Helen
were shot when they stopped on Murphys Creek Road after recognising Kenneth
Doig's car on the side of the road.
The injuries sustained by Brett Doig and his mother were not fatal.
The girl's co-accused, Daniel Michael Hallin, 22, and Peter Noel Stephens,
20, have not yet been required to enter pleas to charges arising from the
incident.
