Since he wrote many of the best episodes, it seems odd that he's so obscure to
us fans.
Any info is appreciated.

Sadly, I believe, that Philip Levene is now dead. This may have taken place
during the Tara King series as Terry Nation took over his job and script
consultant/story editor. The only mention of any background was on the Kult
Video tapes where Pat Macnee reflects that Levene work in a mortuary prior to
becoming a script writer.

Philip Levene was an actor prior to working as a scriptwriter - he acted
between 1950 and 1955 and took up his career as a writer in 1956. He
was certainly still working in 1974 when he worked on two TV movies
directed by Sidney Hayers. After that, the trail runs cold...

In fact, didn't he have a small part in one of the "Quatermass" serials?

Thanks for that! Can anyone track his doings post-'74?
If he has passed on, it's a shame and a pity no one ever did an interview. He
was an incredibly inluential behind-the-scenes figure of the Rigg era, arguably
second only to Clemens.
BTW, according to "The Avengers Dossier" Levene left the show after a
disagreement with Clemens about the series' direction. But he remained in the
Albert Fennel fold, working on other (not terribly notable) projects.

That WOULD explain why pallbearers and hearses keep turning up in the
oddest storylines (The Gravediggers, The Hidden Tiger)--
Since it was around the same time as "The Prisoner", I'd just assumed it
was there for quirk value...

English pop culture seemed to be preoccupied with such images. Anyone seen the
Kinks' famous "Dead End Street" video, banned by the BBC for showing
pallbearers? Also, Monty Python had at least one episode fixated on
pallbearers, stumbling up a steep street.
Greg O.
Anyone have any insights as to why there is that preoccupation? And while
we're at it, what is the rapt fascination with transvestites in England?
