Well, sort of. The story in question was the two-part "K is for Kill"
and we see Emma/Di just twice. The ep starts with a flashback to 1965
and Steed telephones Mrs Peel, courtesy of some unused footage of Di
from one of her colour eps (can't remember which one.) The episode then
moves on to 1977 and Steed telephones her a second time - again we see
some old Avengers footage... which looks a bit strange as Emma is still
wearing sixties fashions in what is supposed to be 1977! However for
part of the scene the camera is focused on Steed and we only *hear* Emma
- she tells Steed that she is no longer called Mrs Peel. Now, whether
this was a newly-recorded piece of dialogue from Emma is a good
question. If it is then did they use Di or a "soundalike"? Discuss....
Essentially, though, Di did not actually appear in the episode. Well...
she *did*.... but she *didn't*.... if you know what I mean!

Hey, I saw those trailers too, in Philly on Channel 10!!!! I think I
was about 12 years old at the time. They really made me sit up and
take notice. Of course, I watched the advertised episode very eagerly,
only to discover:

She didn't. She was seen in two brief clips from the old show,
speaking to Steed on a telephone.

Again, no such luck. Although I think after Steed finishes the call
there's a brief scene where Purdey talks with Steed about Mrs. Peel -
I can remember that hearing Purdey say "Mrs. Peel" was oddly thrilling
at the time...!

It was a New Avengers two-parter called "K is For Kill". It starts OK,
but becomes pretty boring as it gets to the junction between the two
spisodes. The clips of Mrs. Peel are taken from two different episodes
(which ones, I am unsure) and they add precious little to the plot,
but it was at least nice to see her.
Thinking very cynically about it after all these years, one can't help
but draw the conclusion that it was a very average New Avengers story
padded out into two episodes, and the producers then looked at it and
thought, "Hmmmm - needs a giimick!", so they added the clips of Mrs.
Peel to heighten nostalgia-value.

Yes, indeed! I was 11, and was promptly ruined for everyday life by The
Avengers!
The other show they showed was "Return of the Saint," which may or may not have
been a good show (hey, I was 11!) But it had a great theme song; and, of
course, Ian Ogilvie, who I found IMPOSSIBLY handsome. =)
Which brings me to my point:
Does anyone know if ANY episodes of ROTS are available?

Nova191919
ITC released a few episodes of this several years ago. I'm pretty sure
they are no longer available. But.... I'm sure you'll struggle to find
anyone who will defend the series. From what I remember of it, the
stoylines showed that ITC was still stuck in the sixties, although they
did at least use genuine locations much of the time. Admittedly Ian
Ogilvy was a far better actor than Roger "Eyebrows" Moore but that's
really all ROTS had going for it!

I remember seeing that in 1976, or 1977... It was advertised that she would
be on there, but if I remember correctly, it amounted to little more than a
cameo.

Geez... I wish we had that channel here in the U.S.... It sounds better
than a lot of the channels we have here. :-)

He also had a regular part on the NBC series "Malibu Shores", which was a
Beverly Hills 90210 clone that didn't last much more than a couple of
months.

Ogilvy was the first person I saw in that role, too. So, to me, Roger
Moore had to live up to him and didn't quite measure up, although I do like
Roger Moore as an actor and he's probably my favorite James Bond. :-)

I'm sure they probably had a much bigger budget the second time. Just like
Star Trek: The Next Generation was of much better quality than the original
series. :-)

Me too! [g]
"Return Of The Saint" reruns are currently being shown on the British cable
channel Granada Plus. If you go to the website
http://www.gsb.co.uk/plus/action/returnsaint/setframe-home.html you can
download photos from the series, plus the ROTS logo from the opening
credits.
Also, if you go to the Saint Club website at http://www.saint.org/ you can
find all sorts of info about Ian Ogilvy, including the two novels he's
written in the last few years (both of which sound interesting). Ogilvy now
lives in California and has made a lot of American tv guest appearances in
the last few years, including "Caroline In The City," "Walker: Texas
Ranger," and a hilarious guest appearance on "Murphy Brown" as a Bill
Gates-like tycoon who proposes marriage to Murphy on the air so she'll stop
asking him tough questions!
I was fourteen in 1979-80 when CBS ran their Friday double feature of "The
Avengers" and "Return Of The Saint." These two shows had a huge impact on
me; I suppose it's an age when a boy needs his heroes, and Ogilvy and Macnee
were mine. I couldn't imagine two cooler guys. (Diana Rigg had a big impact
on me too, but for a different reason... let's just say I'm glad that Diana
Rigg and puberty both hit me at the same time!)
I won't get into the age-old argument about who the best Saint was; I think
Roger Moore did a good job as the Saint too. (George Sanders was the worst!)
However, Ogilvy was the first actor I saw in the part, so whenever I read a
Saint book in the years that followed (and I ended up reading nearly all of
them), he was the person I pictured.
A year after CBS ran ROTS, they ran the Roger Moore series for a while. What
surprised me most about the Moore series was how cheap it was compared to
the Ogilvy series (even though they had the same producer). All the Ogilvy
episodes were filmed on location, many in France and Italy; Moore's episodes
were nearly all studio-bound. (A typical Moore episode would begin with
stock footage of Buenos Aires, the onscreen title "Buenos Aires," and then a
cut to an interior shot of Moore... presumably in B.A. but really at the
Elstree studio!)
I did download the ROTS theme song from some newsgroup or website; if I can
find the URL I'll let you know. But I just wanted to let you know there's
someone else who loved "Return Of The Saint" as much as you did.

I believe scriptwriters deliberately wrote in catfights, because of
their popularity with the audience. Hence the prolonged one in the
marriage bureau episode.

Thanks for that, Marlene. Yes, I suspected they must have used a
"soundalike". I wonder who it was?
Are you sure it was out takes? I could have sworn it really was Diana
Rigg- wearing a bad Mrs. Peel wig. It really was a cheat, since it
was advertised as featuring her. But......
