Sorry. I couldn't help it. When I was a child she came to open a fete near
us. She looked stunning in a black catsuit and was sooo tall, but I did gasp
at the old complex. It was bitchy to mention it. Sorry, sorry.

Don't be too hard on yourself. It's just that little things like that
bring us into reality and spoils the Emma Peel fantasy we all enjoy so
much.

Yes, I'm sure.
In an interview from a series "Face to Face" Diana is asked the same question
you asked about her height. She says she's always been 5' 8 1/2 " . So it's
from the horse's mouth. I have a photo taken with herand I am 5' 6" and you can
see she's a couple of inches taller than me.

Diana says 5 8 1/2 in Face to Face -- but she has said in
other print interviews that she is 5 9 1/2 inches!
Incidentally, for those in the USA, and have the Ovation Channel -
Ovation is repeating the Face to Face Interview on May 19th -
Tuesday - 2PM

She's about 13 inches on my TV.

I remember in the late sixties that publicity materials about The Show
gave Diana Rigg's height as 5' 9 1/2". I'm 5' 9" (or at least I was when
I was in High School in the early 1960s) and I've seen her up close
twice.

The first time in the mid-1970s when she was on Broadway in THE
MISANTHROPE, and I lurked outside to get her autograph. When she came
out, however, she was wearing platform shoes (bad taste in a Goddess is
always a shock...), and I couldn't judge her height, though with
those...things...on her feet she was taller than me. (Oddly, she came
out accompanied by a man on each side of her, both of them noticeably
shorter than me. Were they bodyguards, or just to keep her from falling
over when she tried to walk in those ridiculous things? But I digress...

The second time was more useful, being about four years ago, when she
was again on Broadway, this time in MEDEA, and gave a reading of her
book NO TURN UNSTONED to benefit an actors' charity. For those who paid
a bit extra, and I did, there was a reception beforehand, and I saw her
from about five feet away, noticing that she was this time wearing sane
shoes, with negligible heels, and she was my height or a bit less.

So I'd say 5' 8 1/2" is a highly plausible measure of the Rigg.

Hank -- The Misanthrope was not Diana's first Broadway appearance --
in 1971, she starred with Keith Michell in ABelard and Heloise
on Broadway (first in Los Angeles). IN fact, she was nominated for a Tony
for Heloise as well as for Celimene, and again in 1994 for Medea - the
third time a winner. When I saw Diana in 75 in the Misanthrope (2x in NY
once in DC) - she always had on flat shoes! I think the sight of Diana
in platforms (which were in fashion at that time) would have brought
on a fit of giggles on my part.

I've been reading all of your posts about Diana Rigg and you seem to
have an astounding amount of detailed information on her. I hope you
won't find this intrusive if I ask a few questions.

Are you connected with Rigg in some way?

Did you start this newsgroup?

What is this book you authored, QUEEN VICTORIA'S DESCENDANTS?

Is the book a work of fiction or a true book of genealogy?

If it's a true work of genealogy, is Diana Rigg part of that
genealogy?

What is "Royal Books"? Is it a publisher of books exclusively about
the royal family?

to answer your questions -- I did not start this NG -
I don't even have Windows yet - let alone the ability to start
a news group --
If you have questions about my book (which is about Queen Victoria's
Descendants - and is a genealogy) or Royal Book News, please contact
me via e-mail =
As for Dame Diana -- I am a great admirer of her work - and have been
for 30 or so years. Yes, I do know Diana - and I do see her in England
when she's working (or when she's in NYC working). She knows about my
scrapbook collection - about 13 volumes which stand about 5 feet -
and this collection has been used by AP's drama critic, Michael Kuchwara
(I used to work for AP), Diana's US agent, Lionel Larner; the producer of
Colette - the American musical which died in Denver en route to Broadway.
In 1994, Diana did all of her Medea interviews before leaving London -
however, Michael, who raved about the show, wanted to interview her
in NYC --when I saw her afterward her performance for drinks - I mentioned
Michael and the fact that the AP is the largest wire service in the world -
and reaches about 1500 papers in the US and Canada -- and he really wnated
to do an interview. She agreed - and called Michael that night,
and three days later, he took her to lunch and got the interview. She
did one or two interviews later - and one was with a Chicago paper but
the subject of the interview was Mystery! and not Medea.
Diana is not a descendnat of QV - but her daughter, Rachael is a descendant
of Scottish kings through her father, Archie Stirling of Keir.
Rachael was a pupil at the Young England Kindergarten when then Lady Diana
Spencer wiped noses there. Rachael hated her -actually (she said in
an interview a few years ago). The Prince of Wales often was a guest
at the Stirling home in Scotland - for shooting, and also spent time in
the nursery giving Rachael piggy back rides.
Dame Diana is best friends with Lady Sarah Keswick (Archie's
cousin) who is a good friend of the Prince of Wales and Mrs. Parker Bowles -
and Dame Diana moves in that social circle, but she never talks about it.
I wish I could have interchangeable sigs, but I cannot even
change this one - or edit it - so it appears in all my posts whether here
or in several royalty newsgroups.
I also write for several magazines and have done lots of television
(CNN, MSNBC, Dateline, etc) for royal stories. Let's just say I was really
busy during the two weeks following Diana's death -- in that time alone,
I was on MSNBC 5 times. I use my maiden name for writing

One last questions. You always refer to her as "Dame" Diana. Why?
What does that title mean? Did she earn it when she got married to
Archie Stirling of Keir? Or was it bestowed in some other way?

In 1987, Miss Diana Rigg received the CBE, Commander of the Order of
the British empire -- In 1994, the Queen created her Dame Commander of
the Order of the British Empire -- in fact, the official list for the
Queen's Birthday Honors was published the day before Diana won the Tony -
although the list was released to the media on Friday -the Honors
list was published Sat and the Tonys were on Sunday.
Dame Commander is the eqivalent of a knighthood for a male --
Diana is only one of five living actresses who are Dames -
Dame Judi Dench, Dame Maggie Smith, Dame Wendy Hiller and Dame Thora
Hird are the others -- it is one of the highest honors a civilian can
receive in Britain - In November of 1994, accompanied by her daughter
Rachael, and her dresser, Charles Routledge, Diana went to
Buckingham Palace for the official investiture ceremony

The CBE is one step below the DBE. And, in fact, the DBE ranks
higher than the KT (Knights Bachelor) that actors receive -
Derek Jacobi, Ian McKellan, Gielgud, Michael Gambon, among others
are KTs, not KBE (Knights Commander)

The official style is Dame Diana Rigg, DBE
