Does anyone know the first episode Faith said the phrase "five by five"??
And also any other subsequent episodes where the phrase was used??

And how did the phrase catch on?? Did the writers always planned to have
Faith say that, or did they just keep writing it in the script and it just
caught on??

hmmmmmm.....

1. She said it right from the get-go. In her first ep, Faith, Hope and Trick
3.03 Oz asks her how she feels about werewolfs, and she replies: "Hey, long as
you don't go scratchin' at me or humpin' my leg, we're five by five."

2. She then used it again in the ending scene of Revelations, when she was
betrayed by Gwen Post, and Buffy came by can checked how she was. Faith's
response was "five by five".

3. Near the end of Bad Girls, after all they went through with the assistant
mayor, Buffy asked how Faith was again and Faith replied "five by five".

By then I think it was pretty much the Faith catch-phrase.

Eliza herself uses the phrase. Joss Whedon heard her and thought is
sounded cool and they incorporated it into the character, just like the
did Eliza's Boston background.

Man how I loved the dialog in the old Buffy's.

Hmm... not my favourite gag, simply because they used it twice in S3,
and it cropped up again (done very badly) in the dreadful Angel S1
episode 'I Will Remember You.'

From 'Homecoming':

XANDER
Oh God, what'd you do to each other?

BUFFY
Long story.

CORDELIA
Got hunted.

BUFFY
Apparently not that long.

And from 'I Will Remember You':

ANGEL
I tried to do what I thought was
right, it's complicated how this all
happened, Buffy, you know? It's kind
of a long story.

BUFFY
Your sidekick had a vision, I was in
it, you came to Sunnydale.

ANGEL
Okay, maybe not that long...

Pretty sure someone else has answered by now, but just in case, the
first time we heard her say it was the first time we saw her, in
Faith, Hope and Trick.

According to one of the Joss commentaries, he heard ED using it in
real life, and incorporated it into the character of Faith.

This Year's Girl after Buffy and Willow encounter Faith at the
college. Tara is accompanying Willow as she goes out to join the hunt
for Faith, and Tara frets about the possibility of violence (or
swimming).

Willow: "Don't worry, we're sure to spot Faith first. She's like this
cleavagy slut-bomb walking around 'Ooh, check me out, I'm wicked-cool,
I'm five-by-five'."
Tara: "5x5? 5 what by 5 what?"
Willow: "See, that's the thing. No one knows."

Eliza herself has jokingly complained that she can't be herself anymore
since Whedon did that. Whenever she uses Faith-like phrases in
real-life, she gets shit from her friends for "copying" Faith when it's
really the other way around, that Whedon made Faith a copy of Eliza.

The other big Faith word that's part of her real-life vocabulary is
"wicked". Apparently that's quite a common deal in Boston for people to
say that.

Very minor spoiler for 7x17 'Lies My Parents Told Me'...

Hello again, "it's a long story" joke! (In the Giles/Buffy/Wood
catch-up scene at the start.)
