Who is the strongest of the three...Angel, Spike or Buffy? Is Angel now

Could Buffy best Angel in a fight? Could Spike?
My theory is that Angel is the strongest of the three, and that Buffy and Spike
are virtually evenly matched, with Buffy at a disadvantage when she is moping
and Spike at a disadvantage when she is pissed off. Buffy might have a slight
edge, as it is her show, after all.
It would be interesting to see Angel go bad again, Spike get his mojo back...
and the ensuing battle to the death between Angel, Spike, and Buffy, each one
trying to kill the two others. If it happens, I hope it will be on Angel
rather than BtVS, since the FX are better.

You do actually have a point there. I mean normal blood keeps a Vamp healthy, so
maybe Slayer blood gives them an extra edge

Well Buffy does have an edge. She's kicked Spike's ass in just about every fight.
She and Angel are usually evenly matched, especially because she loves him

Definitely! I want the bad Spike back. Remember his first episode, he was really
cool then

Spike would be a bit 'odd one out' though seeing as he hates both Buffy and Angel,
while Buffy and Angel have chemistry between each other (Remember how Angelus liked
to play games with Buffy near the end of Season 2?), while they both hate Spike.
Angelus would probably stake Spike first just so he could have some 'time alone'
with his favorite Slayer

Yes, that would be very cool. I wonder what it would be like having Buffy fighting
with better FX. The one time she has been on the show they weren't doing much with
the budget that episode.

| Who is the strongest of the three...Angel, Spike or Buffy?
I think Angel and Buffy are pretty evenly matched with Spike coming a close
second.
| Is Angel now
| stronger than Buffy due to his vamp strength combined with drinking the
blood
| of a slayer?
It would make sense, since The Master gained strength after drinking from
Buffy. But we haven't seen any real indication that Angel's gained anything
in strength. I'd like to see this explored more. Come to think of it, why
didn't Drusilla drink from Kendra, if a Slayer's blood is supposed to be so
powerful?
| And if his extra strength wanes, will he have to drink from Buffy again to
recharge? (Please, say it is so!)
I hope not. That scene was so shocking and erotic and almost painful to
watch. If Angel drinking from Buffy is repeated, it would ruin a lot of the
emotional impact of that scene.
| Are Spike and Buffy evenly matched, hence one never defeating the other?
Or is
| it just that they are in love? (j/k)
Heh, you say you're just kidding, but we know better. ;) I think under good
circumstances, Buffy will always beat Spike in a fight. It just so happens
that he usually gets her when she's worried about her mother and school
[School Hard], helpless [Halloween] or distracted and depressed [THLOD]. He
may be a worthy opponent in a fight, but I think Buffy knows she can kill
him if she absolutely has to. She just doesn't WANT to. ;)
| Could Buffy best Angel in a fight?
She has before [Innocence and B2], so I imagine she could again. I think the
one thing that sets her apart from Angel when the two of them are fighting
is that she wants to win just a little bit more. That gives her a very
slight edge.
| Could Spike?
Nope. I think Angel could pretty much kick the crap out of Spike unless he
was deathly ill. There's nothing in canon about this, but I have a feeling
the sire is always stronger than the childe. The only thing that let Angel
kill Darla was that she never expected him to do so. If she had perceived
him as a real threat, I believe Darla would have won that fight.

I would go with Angel as the physically strongest, if for no other
reason than that, mystical power type being equal, size should count.
(If mystical power type ain't equal, size doesn't matter, Larry could
bulk up to beat the band and Buffy could still snap him like a twig)
>Are Spike and Buffy evenly matched, hence one never defeating the other? Or is

In the relationship between Spike and Buffy, Spike is the drum, and
Buffy is the drumstick. Buffy hasn't destroyed Spike. She's beat him
every single time they fought, except the first time.
>Could Buffy best Angel in a fight? Could Spike?
Yes. No.
Let's go to the tape.
>My theory is that Angel is the strongest of the three, and that Buffy and Spike
>are virtually evenly matched, with Buffy at a disadvantage when she is moping

I would say that Angel is the physically strongest, but not a quantum
level different from the others. Buffy's quicker, and Buffy's the
best fighter of the three (I can't think of a single feat of martial
artistry that either Spike or Angel has done, that Buffy hasn't more
or less duplicated. Buffy has done things that I haven't seen Spike
or Angel duplicate.)
I consider the end of Becoming to be the canonical answer to Hoo'd Win
in regards to Angel and Buffy. As for the one time we've seen Spike
seem to be winning, the fight wasn't over yet, and his advantage at
that point wasn't nearly as great as Angel's, when Angel had Buffy
disarmed and sprawled in a corner and was thrusting his sword in to
skewer her.
> You do actually have a point there. I mean normal blood

Here's a question: how healthy? It seems to me that, as far
as we know, blood keeps vamps alive, but it isn't like
taking vitamin c or something.
I doubt very seriously that slayer blood gives an extra
edge. After all, the slayer blood was a cure to an illness.
It does not seem to that there was any indication given that
it had more properties than curing that particular poison.

Spike lusts after Buffy, and then gets angry at himself for
it...not quite the same as love

I go with Spike, just because he isn't so maudlin as Angel.
And just to be contrary.

I agree with all of those points. And I agree with those
that say that Angel's sheer size may give him an advantage.

I think that Angelus hates Buffy with more of a passion than
Spike, because he believes that Buffy makes Angel weak. It
could either be good or bad for Angelus, it is hard to tell.
I am not sure if Angelus hates Spike. I think he is rather
annoyed by him. In any case, a three-way fight would be fun
to watch.

Well, I'd definitely put Spike at the bottom of the list. Buffy's kicked
his ass a number of times, most recently while fighting over the Gem of
Amara. I'd also say that Angel was stronger than Spike based on their
fight in In the Dark. IIRC, Angel fought Spike to a standstill without
ever putting on his 'game face'. Spike was vamped out but Angel wasn't
and it's my understanding that a vampire or demon (Doyle in Bachelor
Party) is stronger when the demon part emerges enough to morph their
features. Also, Spike felt the need to bring Marcus in to help him
capture Angel for torturing, which would seem to indicate they he didn't
think he could take Angel alone.
I"m less sure about Angel and Buffy but I'd say that Buffy was stronger.
I understand that she did defeat him (as Angelus) in Becoming (though I
didn't see the ep so I'm not that clear on the details). I'd also tend
to pick Buffy just because she *is* the the Slayer. She was created to
defeat vampires and so (theoretically at least) should be stronger, in a
one-on-one scenario, than almost any individual vampire. I don't see
Angel as being extraordinarily strong for a vampire (Penn seemed to gain
the upper hand in their fight in Somnambulist) so Buffy's inherent
strength should be greater than his.
>Is Angel now stronger than Buffy due to his

Is there any on-screen evidence that drinking Slayer's blood will make a
vampire stronger? I know Angel needed Slayer blood to recover from the
poison in Graduation Day but I assumed that was because Slayer blood was
a specific antidote to the poison, not that it necessarily made him
stronger.

>This is not a poll, these are rhetorical questions. If anyone has a theory,
>please share.
I think that originally Buffy was the strongest of the three.
Angel gained in strength once he reverted to Angelus (probably because
of his improved diet), and became stronger again during S3 (either
through his added age (time spent in hell) or because of his drinking
from Buffy - or both) so that right now Buffy and Angel are about even
in strength.
Spike is the weakest of the three now, but I think that he and the
Angel of S1 and 2 (before he lost his soul) were about even. Spike
might even have been stronger (and he certainly would have been in
better practice).
>Could Buffy best Angel in a fight? Could Spike?
Angel has the big disadvantage in any fight against Buffy that he
would be very reluctant to hurt her, and probably couldn't bring
himself to kill her at all.
Angelus wouldn't have any problem with hurting Buffy, but he may be
unwilling to kill her without making her suffer - a lot - first.
If it came to a fight between Buffy and Angel(us) it would depend very
much on the circumstance (especially their motivations) as to who
would win in the end.
It isn't always the strongest or most skilled fighter that wins (even
in the real world).
I think that Spike's chances of winning a fight against either Angel
or Buffy are about 25%, but so are his chances of getting staked by
either of them.
And that was before he got his implant While he has that I would say
that he is pretty safe from getting staked by either of them, since
they would enjoy seeing him suffer under the frustration of being
unable to bite way too much.
Still looking forward to Angel finding out about that implant. :-)
He'd likely tease Spike to the point were he would try beating Angel
to a pulp (and I don't think that his implant would kick in since
Angel is a demon afterall, but then one of the humans would step
between them and Spike would find himself writhing on the floor). :-)

Buffy is probably the strongest. Spike is almost certainly the
physically weakest. However none of them are very far apart
and you must remember that strength isn't everything.
Angel is a far better *warrior* than Buffy is simply
because he carries and uses far better and more weapons.
Buffy is a good fighter, but she really needs rather a lot
of hitting with a cluestick in the weapons department.

Because Dru is totally insane?
We have good indication that Angel was stronger after drinking in B2.
The mayors comments and the huge amount of ass he kicked in the final fight
both indicate that he was running on a significant buzz.
How much of that was permanent is a bit difficult to tell. But going by the
fact that Spike is unusually powerful for a vampire as young as he is I'd say
that there probably is some permanent effect.

Spoilers for "Helpless".
I saw Buffy defeat Angel at the beginning of "Helpless".
Becoming 2 happened before Angel drank Buffy's blood. He and Buffy haven't
fought since then, hence my uncertainty that Buffy could still beat him. [BTW,
it was stated by either Joss or Greenberg, I believe, that Angel has become
much stronger since drinking from the Slayer, which is why he is so much more
powerful on his own show than he ever was on BtVS. I don't accept outside
statements as canon, but it was implied that Angel had gained unusual strength
as a result of drinking from Buffy in GD2.
I saw the fight between Spike and Buffy in HLOD as being something of a draw.
Spike defeated her and might have succeeded in killing her if he hadn't decided
to piss her off instead... and all Buffy succeeded in doing was taking the ring
from him, she wasn't able to kill him.
The only time I can remember Buffy truly kicking Spike's ass was in What's My
Line.
That would not be wise of Angel. What does an abstaining vampire, who
struggles every day, have to gain by taunting another vampire who must abstain?
He should support and encourage Spike with the slim hope that Spike won't try
to get the implant out, rather than taunt and make him all the more eager to
get the implant out, and all the more desirous of revenge once he does. Spike
is still dangerous, and Buffy is his favorite target. If Angel taunted Spike
over this, it would make him smack-worthy.

It may not be wise, but look at their history together and I just
can't believe that Angel wouldn't make any kind of snarky remark about
Spike newfound restraint. (Likely in the form of congratulating Spike
on becoming a good guy, which would drive Spike absolutely livid :-)).
"You stupid poof! When *are* you people going to get it through your
thick heads that I'm evil! Evil, I tell you! I'm not the Slayer's

I don't think that there is any way to make Spike *more* eager to get
his implant out. And as for making him any more hell-bent to get
revenge on Angel and/or Buffy, I don't think that you could increase
that desire by much more either.
He blames Buffy for everything bad that ever happened in his life,
rightly or wrongly.
I wouldn't be surprised if he even blames her not only for Angel
having gone soft, but also for Angelus having changed from his revered
yoda into a guy that no longer plays with a full deck (because of his
obsession with the Slayer). Which might be the reason why he went
back to Sunnydale after his stint in LA instead of continuing to haunt
Angel there (who he only went up against to get the ring, which he
wanted so he could best Buffy). And never mind that Buffy still
kicked his keister when he had it the last time. This time he would
plan his confrontation instead of just rushing in...
>Spike
>is still dangerous, and Buffy is his favorite target. If Angel taunted Spike
>over this, it would make him smack-worthy.
Buffy taunts Spike all the time, so I guess that means you think she
needs to get smacked too?
Why would it be any more reprehensible if Angel did so?
Actually what Angel should do, is stake Spike the first chance he
gets. It's not like Spike has a soul that could be saved after all.
He is an evil demon and, as you quite rightly point out, still
dangerous. Not likely to happen though (plus it would be a shame to
lose Spike, since he is a fun character to have around, if only to
watch him scewer the Scoobies with his tongue). :-)

Not stricktly speaking true. Buffy fought Angel in Beauty and the
Beasts, and won. (Okay, he was fresh back from hell and still weak.)
She and Angel also used to practice together, and the one time we saw
them doing that, she 'staked' him with a baguette.

I know that Jeff Pruitt has used the "he drank from Buffy" explanation
for why Angel seems so much stronger on Angel, but I haven't noticed
any official confirmations. I think it is just that the Angel stunt
people do more outrageous stuff. (And Joss has asked them to tone it
down.)

Of course during that fight Spike had the distinct advantage of wearing
a ring which made him invulnerable. If he hadn't had the ring on it
might have been a totally different story.

To which Cordelia would give Spike a sweet little smile, and say, "That's why I have
this stake with your name on it. I'll shove it through *your* heart if I even think
you want me for dinner."
Let's face it, if Cordelia is willing to stake a soulless Angel in a heartbeat,
she'll stake an implant-less Spike in even less time.

Well, not *alive* as such, but I do know what you mean. However wasting away *is* unhealthy, and that has been shown on the show.

It was just a thought.

True, very true

I think it counts in all the books, even the pop-up ones

Ah, yes. I have always preferred Spike's...'bright' outlook on life

Not to sound antagonistic, but how? Size doesn't equal strength. I know he's strong, but is he as strong as Buffy. He's never seemed to have an advantage in
other fights against her, apart from that one where she couldn't get up the nerve to kill him until their last battle.

Yes, that's it. It just wouldn't be the same without the torment

They haven't even taken advantage of his demon fighting ability. The only time they've let him fight he was wearing some of Xander's pathetic clothes which
took away all the cool

Yeah, it would, definitely. Not only that, plotline wise it is perfectly workable

Good question. True, size doesn't equal strength, but I do
think bulk does play some sort of role, if not necessarily
an overriding one. Merely being able to throw one's weight
around could give an advantage, especially if it is combined
with intelligence and quickness. Since Angel seems to have
all three, I think it is possible for that to give him an
advantage. Of course, Buffy has the superhuman power thing
going on for her, so that probably evens things out ;-)

Well, there is also the question of reach. Angel's arms and legs are
both longer than Buffy's, which should give him a bit of an advantage
in certain circumstances. Of course he also presents a bigger target,
which should make him easier to hit. :-)
hgh
Spike says he killed 2 slayers in his time. Surely he drank their blood!!!??
That theory would make him mega strong!
And for a vampire as young as he is, he *is* mega strong. Remember that Angel
is actually a very old vampire by most standarts. (Time in hell + time on earth)
I can give you guys the EXACT run down of how Angel came to be the way
he is and why the Spike/Buffy fight turned out the way it did ---
For the first fight I did with the Angel character in it I was told by
one of the producers that "Angel can't fight as well as Buffy. She has
to save him." So you see him getting hit in the face with a shovel and
decked when he tries to help Buffy take on a vamp. (*This was very
early in season 2)
Later on I started adding more "Buffy-like" fighting moves whenever he
became involved in the action. Again, one of the producers came to me
and said, "Who said he could fight like that?" I told him to let me add
some kicks for Angel too, because he'd been around for many years and
should've learned some things by now. David Greenwalt told me to tone
it down and to give him only one kick and a punch and let Buffy do most
of the fighting. So I did. (*The particular episode I am speaking of
here is the one where Buffy & Angel stop some vamps who are stealing
blood from the hospital) I had Angel do a 540 degree jumping round kick
and knock the vamp into what we call the "Hong Kong Spin" and send him
into the back of a car.
After that it became okay for me to make Angel on par with Buffy's
skill. As the season progressed we decided that he was every bit as
good as Buffy and then finally had them end up in a sword fight to the
death. Oddly enough, by this time Joss had breifly tossed out the idea
to me of making Buffy totally unskilled with the sword and only running
away while struggling to fend off Angel. I think he thought we'd be
able to get more Sarah shots that way. I asked him to give me a chance
to choreograph a sword fight first and show him and the actors some
things they could do easily in close-up. He agreed and asked for only
one thing. He wanted Buffy to do the old "Samurai sword catch" while at
her lowest moment. So that's just what we did. Other than the fact
that Brad (who was doubling Angel that day) didn't get the Angel wig we
had for him, it turned out pretty good.
On BUFFY we've had some older people behind the scenes who really didn't
get the whole idea of being able to throw someone across a room or leap
high or anything. Whenever we did this they would complain loudly and I
think that scared some people. So I had to back away from using any
wires or air ram tricks. THEN MATRIX CAME OUT. Joss and David Boreanaz
loved the film and I told him that's what I'd been doing for years
anyway. Woo Ping even had dinner with me before the MATRIX shoot and
put one of my old gags I showed him into the movie. (*It's the stunt
where Neo and the baddie leap at each other, collide mid-air, and spin
to the floor while holding guns.)
Another funny bit of trivia is that one of my stuntmen, Chad, who
doubled Angel during the fight with Buffy under the water sprinklers, is
the stunt double for Keanu Reeves in MATRIX. He also happened to be the
vamp that Buffy was fighting that first time when Angel had to be hit in
the face with a shovel.
So now when the ANGEL series was ready to shoot, David Boreanaz was all
about wanting Angel to be super-strong. So that's just what we did. I
told Joss that I was telling the fans that the reason he was suddenly so
strong was because he drank "Slayer's blood." He agreed that it made
sense and he said to go with that explanation.
It's a funny thing, but a couple of times Joss has complained that
people were jumping too high or something and has asked us to tone that
down on Angel and Buffy. So it's hard for us to be sure when that line
gets crossed. I just try to go to him and ask before I do anything too
radical. Except for ...
... recently. I can't tell you much here except that Joss gave me one
command regarding Angel's recent visit to Buffy. Joss told me to
remember that Angel is really strong now. So I put a couple of things
in there that will demonstrate this in episode 20 without crossing that
line of theirs - I hope. I think we hit on just the right balance for
the character. You guys can tell me after it airs if you think this is
right balance between the fantasy elements and the more realistic stuff.
In episode 21 I throw in a lot of things. I even dared to put Buffy on
a wire a couple of times and for once, no one tried to stop me. This
time they even encouraged me to go ahead with it. I tried to be right
on that line with that and not go too far. Hopefully all of it will
make it into the final cut. We'll see. All I can say is that the show
is so long right now that I know a lot will simply have to be cut out
for time purposes alone.
As far as Spike goes in HLOD: Joss told me one thing before I
choreographed the fight. He said to make sure that Buffy is getting her
butt kicked up until the moment Spike mentions Angel. Unfortunately I
had to cut out some of the "Buffy comeback" moment due to time that day.
They had scheduled a lot of other things to shoot after the fight
scene and we had to cut it shorter than I would've like.
Sometimes I think Joss really enjoys watching Buffy get knocked around.
That seems to be his main theme with her. That's cool because I
haven't seen any other female character on TV get banged up the way she
does and keep going. She's in a class by herself there. (*Though it
really has been brutal on Sophia to do this for years on end)
So there you have it. During hiatus Sophia and I plan on finishing up
the Dreamcast/Playstation Game and then jetting off to work on SHEENA:
QUEEN OF THE JUNGLE. I'm getting my own unit to shoot action with and
Sophia is going to double Gena Lee Nolin for some stunts. No martial
arts, but I do get an episode of my own to direct - so that will be fun.
Plus, it all happens in the daytime. Yay! We get to feel human again
for a while.
Hope you guys enjoy the final episodes of the season.
take care,

That makes sense. A vampire who survives that long has to have some nice
moves.

You know what I am dying to see, Jeff? I am dying to see Spike do one of those
big leaps or move real real fast. Hey he can't drink anymore, the least he can
do is jump onto a roof or something!

Then I am definitely a big fan of Chad.

No! No toning down! Jump! Jump more!

Wheeeee! Poo on realism. If I want realism I'll go to work on Monday. ;)

Oh, I knew it! Spike opened a can of whup-ass on Buff!

Still...she didn't kill him, so I can hang on to my little fantasy wish that he
