Hi all,

Just a quick question so that I can throw the answer back in my friends &
family's faces - what is the average age of Buffy / Angel fans? Is there an
average???

I ask this because I am constantly being teased by everyone for watching
'teenybopper' shows. (A term I take great offence to when it is used to
describe my two favourite shows).

The producers have stated catagorically that Buffy is watched mostly
by adults. I haven't seen precise statistics, but there was a lot of
discussion after the network as to why a show that delivers
advertisers less than 5 million viewers a week should be so sought
after and garner so much attention.

It was reported that BtVS's primary strengths are in the 18-34 and
18-49 demographics. Most BtVS viewers are female. The US network, UPN,
is paying a lot of money for the show: substantially more than the
show will bring in in advertising revenue. UPN has been claiming it is
using BtVS as a loss leader. It hopes to bring in the above
demographics to compliment its largely male audience. UPN CEO Dean
Valentine was recently quoted as saying, "when we meet this time next
year, UPN will not only have improved substantially from where we are
today, but we will have beaten The WB on four out of five nights that
we program in *adults* 18 to 34, 18 to 49 and total viewers." [My
emphasis.]

I think UPN is taking a big gamble here. UPN's chief rival, the WB, is
claiming the amount of money it took to steal the show from them will
almost match UPN's upfront advertising revenue for the entire season.
It's hard to imagine that UPN is betting the farm on a show aimed at
teenyboppers.

I don't think you want to be looking at an average age. Age ranges are
what advertisers look at, and they're looking at females between the
ages of 18-34 and 18-49.

I hope I gave you enough ammunition.

A short time ago there was a thread on this... didn't it put the median
somewhere in the late 20s? Does anyone remeber the subject line?

Most people I know who are watching Buffy are around 30, but that might
be because most people I know at all are around 30. <g>

I too thought it was a teenybopper show until I caught an episode in season
3. Marketing on the show could have been done better and I would have found
it sooner! Now I get to catch up with FX this fall.

Here's what you do, force your friends to watch it when it starts
syndication on FX on Sept 24. Have your friends over, have a party,
give them free food, whatever it takes!!! If this doesn't work, you can
always talk to us on this here newsgroup thingamajig. :o)

And yet again, my lack of friends forces me to only speak to people on the
Buffy newsgroup. =) Well, lack of guy friends, anyhow. Most of them would
only watch the show because "SMG is so hot" or "that chick from american pie
is hot", or whatnot. It's like nobody cares that the show has an actual
story to it.

I might quote a conversation I had with a former friend of mine:

"You saw Swordfish, right? How was it?"
"You got to see Halle Berry's boobs."
"Yeah, but how was the story?"
"I don't know. Her boobs were good though."

I hope you can understand my situation now. =)

I am 21 years old, and have been watching the show since I was 19 (or
thereabouts).

I'd estimate the average age of Buffy fans to be around 28.

Which is a misperception that the WB's marketing dept. has got to correct as
soon as possible. Otherwise, a potential new audience will dismiss it as
nothing more than 'teenybopper junk' when it's anything but 'teenybopper junk'.

Well, you can throw this into the mix: I'm over 40, my daughter's 8, son's

Since posting this query I have got my husband hooked on the show. He is now
constantly raving about the story line and wanting to know more about the
writers. He is 25, I am 24. My mum is coming to stay tomorrow night (she is
57) so I am going to see if I can rope her into the show too. I have
explained one of the story lines of Buffy to her before. eg. Buffy loves
Angel, Buffy has to kill Angel, but she just shakes her head and laughs. I
suppose it does sound a bit over the top if you haven't been following the
story line and your favourite shows are BBC comedies!!! hahaha. I am
determined to get her interested in the show. My brother however is a lost
hope. When he taped Friends for me one night he said he wouldn't tape it for
anyone else as it goes against everything he believes - and that is a show
that is widely recognised as a show adults watch. If I asked him to tape
Buffy or Angel for me I'm sure he would refuse, even for me!!! (He is a TV
show snob. hahaha)

I'm 23, my brothers are 19 and 15.

Story gets more interesting... at work we had a co-op who absolutely hated
Buffy, based solely on the fact he didn't like a five-minute clip he'd seen
towards the end of one episode. He tried teasing me about it, which didn't
amount to much because I wasn't ashamed of watching it (one Tuesday night we
were all working late, and I made a point to loudly bemoan the fact I was going
to miss my weekly dose of SMG. "Download a picture!" was his retort).

A month later, during dinner at a department retreat, the discussion somehow got
around to asking who at the table liked and watched Buffy. Of the 10 people at
the table, 6 were solidly in my camp with another two liking it but not watching
it religiously. The other two were him and another who doesn't watch much TV.

So here are some stats:

my manager (plus his wife): mid 30s
supervisor (plus his girlfriend): early 30s/late 20s
2 co-ops: early 20s
Various other co-workers: mid-20s, early 30s, one early 40s

Needless to say, he was quite shocked that otherwise intelligent people were so
into this poor excuse for a TV show (to paraphrase his words) ;-)

Then again, he liked Voyager, and thought the Phantom Menace was better than
Empire Strikes Back, so draw your own conclusions ;-)

There is great wisdom to be had watching Buffy. In the season finale
( a minor spoiler if you haven't seen it yet, run away now before you
read further! You've been warned!)

when Xander said about Anya that smart chicks are hot and Willow
retorted that he shoulda known that in high school is right on the
money. So if you're friends are teasing you because you enjoy Buffy
rest assured that in 20 years A) It won't matter cause they probably
won't be your friends anymore anyway and B) You'll be a lot wiser
then them and it'll make it that much easier for you to find a
girlfriend cause you hopefully will fill find smart chicks hot. I did
not when I was in High School and i regret that now. wasn't until I
was a senior that I had an inkling that just cause she's cute does not
mean that she has a brain. 'Nuff said

The youngest person I know who watches Buffy is 28. Me, my other friends,
my sister, sister-in-law and my ex are all in various stages of being in our
thirties. Oh, and I recently won the receptionist at work over to the cause
and although she won't tell me her exact age I know she has to be at least
in her fifties because she has children who are my age.

My young nephew, on the other hand, had to be stopped from watching Buffy
when he took to carrying a small knife around for his own personal
protection. It is not a children's show.

I don't know about the thread, but some recent market research put the
average age of a Buffy viewer between 24-28. I know, I have a link somewhere

I am a 43 year old male, a close friend who really likes the show is 42
(she has twelve year old and sixteen year old daughters that both love it
as well). I've turned my 44 year old brother onto it, and he said, "it is
the best television show since Dick Van Dyke!" [High praise, we're talking
the early 1960s DVanD show which is roundly praised as one of the finest TV
shows EVER by "TV Historians". I agree with him, by the way.]

My folks - both in their 70s - are eager to see my tape of "The Body" based
on what they've heard about it. (I'm also sending "Real Me" for contrast,
since it's the funniest episode of the season thanks to Harmony's
ineptness.)

I think that pretty much covers the ages from here.

I'm 23. I've made friends through Buffy/Angel ranging in age from 13 to
50. The show really does cross age boundaries. :)

Not sure about an average (and I think less interesting than the range
of people who watch it), but if I had to guess I'd say mid-20s.

No wonder they were willing to let go of BtVS and aren't emphasizing Angel much
in their promos. We've been saying for years that these shows aren't just for

There was a roll call done here a while back, I believe partly to answer
this question. As I recall the average age was at least somewhat north
of what I expected, which was a comfort to this 39 year old.

On the whole if I had to guess, I'd guess that the average ANGEL fan is
a little older than the average BUFFY fan. I could be totally wrong
about that though.

That would certainly be a huge bit of irony. And speaking of promos, has
anybody else noticed that in the new WB "Faces" promo, everybody is
barefoot? You'd think that after the ugly bidding war with UPN over Buffy,
the last thing The WB would want is to create the image that they are too
cheap to spring for shoes for their actors.

I doubt that they *mind* older viewers. It's just that they make their
programming decisions based on how strong they are with younger viewers.
I'm sure that I-Zone cameras and the U.S. armed forces recruitment
drives aren't put off by the older viewers watching their commercials,
but neither are they excited by them unless, I suppose, we serve as a
tie-breaker. I.e., for _Buffy_ or _Angel_ they'd easily take 2 million
young viewers plus 1 million old viewers over just 2 million young
viewers alone, but they won't be happy if they're getting 2 million old
viewers plus 1 million young viewers. It would still be 3 million
total, but "the demos would skew wrong."

So the WB's self-promotion is all geared towards creating this image of
being the hip place for the young, and any older viewers picked up in
the process are treated like Giles at the Bronze in "Wild at Heart."
Except for _7th Heaven_, the WB doesn't seem to want to be thought of as
entertainment for the entire family because that connotes, well, Disney
in most people's minds rather than gripping drama that's ageless in its
appeal.

I read something about the age group that watches Buffy, can't remember
where though, they were claiming that Buffy (and Angel) have found a
huge market for the 'post-pub' twenty-somethings (in the UK at least)
where they are, or used to be on after closing time - that's certainly

Age of Buffy and Angel Fans.

In this family the age of the Buffy/Angel Watchers range from 9 to 60
and there are quite a few of us. That means that we have practically
every age group, children, grandchildren mums dads and grandpartents.
Also we buy the video tapes. I find it most annoying when our papers
(England) call Buffy a kiddy programme. No way. Unfortunately it is
aired at about 6 on BBC 2 and 9 on Sky. That is before our watershed
and the programme are badly cut.

We all love Buffy. I cannot think of another TV. series where we have
wanted to buy the tapes and keep watching.

I dont see Buffy as a teenie bopper show as such, its one of the few shows
that transcend all ages there are bits that a teenager can relate to, but
sometimes I think that maybe the jokes are aimed strictly at an older
audience (same with The Simpsons).

56 in 4 days. I might add there is nothing average about Buffy fans.

I've just subscribed to this NG. I'll just say I'm in my late 30's. My 14
year old son and I watch both Angel & Buffy. We've been catching the reruns
on FX. It's nice to watch them again and pick up on the little things we
missed the first time around.

I'm interested in purchasing the DVD's. Do you know where someone in the
states could find these??

I'm 55. But I have to admit that part of the reason I go on line to discuss
this show is that I can't get most of my (opinionated, snooty, easily
influenced by a title) peers to even watch it. The people who often come
over for a night of BTVS or Angel (I cook) are all in their twenties.
