Just a quick question so that I can throw the answer back in my friends &
family's faces - what is the average age of Buffy / Angel fans? Is there an
average???
I ask this because I am constantly being teased by everyone for watching
'teenybopper' shows. (A term I take great offence to when it is used to
describe my two favourite shows).
Tania
It was reported that BtVS's primary strengths are in the 18-34 and
18-49 demographics. Most BtVS viewers are female. The US network, UPN,
is paying a lot of money for the show: substantially more than the
show will bring in in advertising revenue. UPN has been claiming it is
using BtVS as a loss leader. It hopes to bring in the above
demographics to compliment its largely male audience. UPN CEO Dean
Valentine was recently quoted as saying, "when we meet this time next
year, UPN will not only have improved substantially from where we are
today, but we will have beaten The WB on four out of five nights that
we program in *adults* 18 to 34, 18 to 49 and total viewers." [My
emphasis.]
I think UPN is taking a big gamble here. UPN's chief rival, the WB, is
claiming the amount of money it took to steal the show from them will
almost match UPN's upfront advertising revenue for the entire season.
It's hard to imagine that UPN is betting the farm on a show aimed at
teenyboppers.
I don't think you want to be looking at an average age. Age ranges are
what advertisers look at, and they're looking at females between the
ages of 18-34 and 18-49.
I hope I gave you enough ammunition.

A short time ago there was a thread on this... didn't it put the median
somewhere in the late 20s? Does anyone remeber the subject line?
Most people I know who are watching Buffy are around 30, but that might
be because most people I know at all are around 30. <g>

I too thought it was a teenybopper show until I caught an episode in season
3. Marketing on the show could have been done better and I would have found
it sooner! Now I get to catch up with FX this fall.
I'm one of the younger Buffy fans - I'm only 15, and I know a chick who
watches both Buffy and Angel that's around my age. Unfortunately, she's the

And yet again, my lack of friends forces me to only speak to people on the
Buffy newsgroup. =) Well, lack of guy friends, anyhow. Most of them would
only watch the show because "SMG is so hot" or "that chick from american pie
is hot", or whatnot. It's like nobody cares that the show has an actual
story to it.
I might quote a conversation I had with a former friend of mine:
"You saw Swordfish, right? How was it?"
"You got to see Halle Berry's boobs."
"Yeah, but how was the story?"
"I don't know. Her boobs were good though."
I hope you can understand my situation now. =)

I'm 23, my brothers are 19 and 15.
Story gets more interesting... at work we had a co-op who absolutely hated
Buffy, based solely on the fact he didn't like a five-minute clip he'd seen
towards the end of one episode. He tried teasing me about it, which didn't
amount to much because I wasn't ashamed of watching it (one Tuesday night we
were all working late, and I made a point to loudly bemoan the fact I was going
to miss my weekly dose of SMG. "Download a picture!" was his retort).
A month later, during dinner at a department retreat, the discussion somehow got
around to asking who at the table liked and watched Buffy. Of the 10 people at
the table, 6 were solidly in my camp with another two liking it but not watching
it religiously. The other two were him and another who doesn't watch much TV.
So here are some stats:
my manager (plus his wife): mid 30s
supervisor (plus his girlfriend): early 30s/late 20s
2 co-ops: early 20s
Various other co-workers: mid-20s, early 30s, one early 40s
Needless to say, he was quite shocked that otherwise intelligent people were so
into this poor excuse for a TV show (to paraphrase his words) ;-)
Then again, he liked Voyager, and thought the Phantom Menace was better than
Empire Strikes Back, so draw your own conclusions ;-)
DF
when Xander said about Anya that smart chicks are hot and Willow

rest assured that in 20 years A) It won't matter cause they probably
won't be your friends anymore anyway and B) You'll be a lot wiser
then them and it'll make it that much easier for you to find a
girlfriend cause you hopefully will fill find smart chicks hot. I did
not when I was in High School and i regret that now. wasn't until I
was a senior that I had an inkling that just cause she's cute does not

I am a 43 year old male, a close friend who really likes the show is 42
(she has twelve year old and sixteen year old daughters that both love it
as well). I've turned my 44 year old brother onto it, and he said, "it is
the best television show since Dick Van Dyke!" [High praise, we're talking
the early 1960s DVanD show which is roundly praised as one of the finest TV
shows EVER by "TV Historians". I agree with him, by the way.]
My folks - both in their 70s - are eager to see my tape of "The Body" based
on what they've heard about it. (I'm also sending "Real Me" for contrast,
since it's the funniest episode of the season thanks to Harmony's
ineptness.)
I think that pretty much covers the ages from here.

That would certainly be a huge bit of irony. And speaking of promos, has
anybody else noticed that in the new WB "Faces" promo, everybody is
barefoot? You'd think that after the ugly bidding war with UPN over Buffy,
the last thing The WB would want is to create the image that they are too
cheap to spring for shoes for their actors.

I doubt that they *mind* older viewers. It's just that they make their
programming decisions based on how strong they are with younger viewers.
I'm sure that I-Zone cameras and the U.S. armed forces recruitment
drives aren't put off by the older viewers watching their commercials,
but neither are they excited by them unless, I suppose, we serve as a
tie-breaker. I.e., for _Buffy_ or _Angel_ they'd easily take 2 million
young viewers plus 1 million old viewers over just 2 million young
viewers alone, but they won't be happy if they're getting 2 million old
viewers plus 1 million young viewers. It would still be 3 million
total, but "the demos would skew wrong."
So the WB's self-promotion is all geared towards creating this image of
being the hip place for the young, and any older viewers picked up in
the process are treated like Giles at the Bronze in "Wild at Heart."
Except for _7th Heaven_, the WB doesn't seem to want to be thought of as
entertainment for the entire family because that connotes, well, Disney
in most people's minds rather than gripping drama that's ageless in its
appeal.
