With all of the threads out there regarding VFTW, Stern, et al., I thought
I'd post, what IMHO is an interesting question. I have been watching AI
since season 2, and lurking/infrequently posting on this NG for the past 3
seasons. Withoug going back through the thousands of archived posts, and
strictly going off of memory alone, doesn't it seem as if the popularity of
the "contraversial" sites/threads/posts/trolls/etc. is increasing at an
inverse relationship to the ones discussing
talent/personability/marketability?

Of course, there have always been the threads of the prepubescent teens
saying they wanted to get into "Contestant X, Y, Z's" pants, but when I
began viewing this NG, it seemed that the majority of the subscribers were
genuinely interested in not only the outcome of the competition and the
contestants therein, but also in the other contributing posters in the NG.
Are the original core of AI fans that breathed life into this NG gone, or
merely waiting for the storm to pass so they can once again claim
"ownership" to what they bagan?

Whether it be due to the exponential increase in the availability of
technology to the previously unaware viewer(although I still have friends
that couldn't find a newsgroup with two hands and a flashlight), an increase
in cynicism of the average viewer due to the current socio-economic status
of the country, or simply the fact that there are more people of dissenting
opinion than 3 years ago, I would love to hear people's thoughts on this.

Just my $0.02. Feel free not to reply. Contrary to what some may desire,
it is still America.

-Chris

No.
The main difference is that trolls can post/sock puppet more efficiently.
Usenet is being abandoned by the major players because there isn't as big a
revenue stream; they give excuses like "the same thing is available via google"
etc.
It all adds up to usenet-o-crap.

Waiting. I've been on this newsgroup for four years and never used a
killfile on it until this week. I've killfiled subject lines containing
Sanjaya, VFTW, Stern, dialidol, etc. and I'm also manually killifiling the
flood of off-topic political stuff that is ruining this group just as much
as the other crap is. I'll stick around at least until the end of this
season, but if the NG hasn't improved a _lot_ by that time, I will be very
tempted to unsubscribe.

problem is this is an open ng. it would be great to have one only on the
merits of the contestants but we would not be able to go of topic now or
the off season. do try to ignore the trolls for the most part.

I guess you could say I'm waiting. I find myself quickly searching through
the ng to find familiar posters, knowing that they probably will have
something of value to post regarding the show. Unfortunately, I'm sure
that I'm missing a good post or two from a newbie.

It's a crapfest here lately, but I swear I think that it has to do with the
"talent" this season. IIRC, we had the same influx of trolls etc in Season
3. Like....there wasn't anything really to talk about except who sucked.
If you recall, people found John Stevens advancement a joke and many/most of
the posters here really didn't like Fantasia and couldn't understand why she
advanced as well... much like Sanjaya is doing. I don't really remember
this ng being horrible last year, but that's probably because there was a
better group of all around talent and personality last year.

I think a lot of the crap is due to crossposting...that and WebTV. ;)

I don't know if I'm one of the original core of AI fans - I read this
ng from the beginning but really only got serious about posting in
Season 4 (sigh - Bo - sigh) but I have to read this through google and
the number of troll posts have worn me out. I wish no ill-will to
Sanjaya and I realize that the controversy his presence brings adds
volume to the airwaves, but I wish he'd go ahead and get voted off
already so we can get back to serious bidniss.

I'm staying away from both the Sanjaya fans and bashers. I don't like his
singing, but for goodness sake, he's 17! I'm staying away from the
political spit-fest. No one has ever convinced anyone of another point of
view based on name calling and selective interpretation. I'm really going
to try and not engage people who are offensive or mean. If something is
cross-posted, I'm trying to neither read or respond to it. I'm not saying I
am consistent about this, but I'm trying. That just doesn't seem to leave
much. Life is too short.

What do you mean by that remark, Sanna???? What does WebTV have to do
with the nature of the posts this season anyhow? WebTV had a major
outage from early Wednesday until yesterday afternoon, and when I
finally was able to access the NG again, there was no posts on here
after Wednesday, so apparently I missed quite a few from elimination
night on! :-( I made two posts when I could get on yesterday and it
took them HOURS to finally show up, and now I find a handful of posts
made by others with today's date, so hopefully things are going back to
normal, or I'll really be ticked!

I have had a Dell desktop computer since Christmas, but wasn't able to
find our NG from it...had several giving me pointers on how to do it,
but....to no avail! I decided to hang on to my WebTV mainly cause it
is so easy to access NG's, so why is that a problem?!

I enjoy the "regular" posters on here, but there does seem to be a lot
more trolls on here, and the atmosphere gets rather "snarly", but that
happens even among those that regularly post, and besides, I just ignore
certain ones, that I know are on here flapping their lip with the
intention of riling the other posters.

am in total agreement. seemed to me we had a better time in the off season
than during this season. the quality has slipped some. maybe they should
use the dwts format and only 11 calls per telephone #.

I'm asking for a legitimate best of the best top 24 and a voting limit for
next season for my Christmas present. Do you think you can handle that
Santa? lol

It was a joke, hence the wink. With the exception of you and about 2 other
people, WebTV brings out some of the worst posters.

For the record, there isn't that much left relevant to this season
after you killfile all of that. What does your list look like after
that, maybe about 10 threads a day tops???

I think Itoshi and I are rather similar on this topic. I still get about
100 posts a day, even with all the thread ignores and the killfiles taken
into consideration. Itoshi, you and I are on the same page. I'm losing
patience with the nonsense, too.

Aren't those threads relevant to American Idol? What is it you're looking
for?

I'd say that all the OT/filler threads popping up in this group are
symptomatic of the lackluster, subpar and downright boring season of AI
which is upon us.

We've had worse seasons, so I don't think that is the only reason. My
irritation usually comes from cross-posters. I do wish my reader had some
way of blocking those. The OT threads (mainly name-calling and political)
have always been around. Whenever I stick my toe in there, I immediately
regret it.

The problem is that the nonsense IS this season, at this point.

The whole damn season has been so full of nonsense -- and I do think
that's one of the reasons that vote numbers are down 15% year-to-year
by Idol's own announced numbers!

I may be way off base, but does anyone actually think these numbers are
real? I don't keep track of numbers from show to show, let alone from
season to season. Even if the numbers are honest, they don't reflect one
vote per phone and so only reflect how fast people can hit redial. Every
year we have some sort of nonsense, usually surrounding someone who gets
much higher than they should have. We all see it. I guess what bugs many
here is that so many are seeking out this group to intentionally draw
other's ire by acting like a little herd of trolls.

It's late and I realize I'm rambling. Sorry, I need sleep but that ideal
escapes me tonight.
