After the first commercial break, the racers are flying out of the Ho Chi
Minh Airport to grab taxis. In the background audio, the producers seem to
have chosen to play what sounds like the distinctive first few bars of
Wagner's "Ride of the Valkyries" before switching to more generic TAR
background music.

RotV is familiar to those of us of a certain age who have seen Apocalypse
Now, where it's played on helicopter-mounted speakers during an assault on
a North Vietnamese-controlled village.

Seems like a questionable choice at best by the production staff.

Bob, ROV for a music choice was likely made by a millenial who was unfamiliar with anything
from the Vietnam era, or with Apocolypse Now. Or even maybe with the story behind ROV.
They probably heard the music or some assistant presented some choices, and they liked this
one the best. I can easily imagine it happening like that. Of course, I could also be totally wrong.

Ride of the Valkyries wasn't written for Apocalypse Now. It's 163 years old--part of Wagner's interminably long Ring Cycle, sort of a 19th century Lord of the Rings. Who doesn't love 17 hours of German High Opera?

A couple of years ago there was a perfume commercial, with the usual imagery of
romance and intrigue, set to Janis Joplin singing "Piece of My Heart." Janis
had very troubled romantic relationships, and she suffered a tragic, early
death.

The winner of the clueless prize might be the commercial selling motorcycle
insurance that used an Allman Brothers song. Founding member Duane Allman was
killed in a motorcycle accident.
