Does anybody know if that's true?
If it is true, what a stupid move. While most people look at the character
Ally, to me Cage & Fish form the foundation the show plays off of.
Ally wouldn't be the same show without Peter.
(no, I'm not a relative or friend of Peter!).
Tim, Ohio
Absolutely untrue. Peter won't be in every episode but he's still very much
a part of the show.

Peter MacNicol will be in seven episodes of the upcoming season.

Question: WHY will Peter Mac Nichol be in only 7 eps in the '01-'02 season?
Does the actor want to do other things besides the show? Did the producers
(etc.) of the show make the decision?
It seems John Cage is a foundation character.
That's not necessarily a hard and fast number. I would re-word that to say
he will be in at least 7 episodes.
The question still remians: Why only seven?
--- Dave
Why do you persist in asking a question for which you're not going to get a
sensible answer? Do you think there's some kind of secret conspiracy to keep
Peter away? All shows change over time, and some cast members come and go.
All have their reasons for doing so, and it's not their responsibility to
tell you what those reasons are. It's as simple as that. Besides, I already
said that it's not necessarily "only seven."

I believe there is just such a conspiracy led by space aliens or
people from the future. The purpose of this conspiracy is
unknown but it's ramifications will be felt by all. Or at least
all who watch the show.

Is there any truth to the rumor that Pauly Shore will join the

west coast? Where would he surf if he were wont to do so?

No I don't. But maybe he was asking for more money and DEK said no.

It's important to bear in mind, these folks have already seen all
the episodes, including those the writers haven't even conceived
yet. For them to risk time travel just to come back here and
mess with the show has to mean something, probably that they have
way too much free time for starters.

Thank you Uncle Dave for your comments.
Having worked in broadcasting for over 30 years, I realize not all
information can be public. But, this IS a fan-based MB. Any cast or crew
member who comes on such a MB have gotta expect questions from fans. Again,
maybe you can't answer all of them...but, why be rude about it?
Like it or not, fans/viewers are the show's "customers". We drive the
ratings that generates the advertising revenue that pays the cast & crews'
salaries.
Mike Most is very generous with his time and information. He tells what he
can, what he knows, and what is "allowed." He has helped to put rumors to
rest, has given us hope for the future of the show and its characters,
shares nice stories and comments about some of the guest stars, etc.
He felt he had answered the question about PM. Maybe he didn't answer it the
way some wanted it answered, but is that a reason to keep nagging him about
it? You keep bugging someone until you get the answer you want? Never mind
annoying them to the point where they are fed up and decide not to share
anything with us at all? Good game plan.
Mike, if you read this, please know that I and many others here really enjoy
your posts and thank you for the time and information you are able to give
to us. Sometimes our curiosity does get the better of us and we do need to
be "put in our place." IMO, you do it with grace.

Hey, don't any of you get me wrong. I appreciate Mike's posts as much

connected to the show available to give us some insight into what's

Well, if it's only 3, we're in for a bad season...... ;)
How about 4?
If the show's run it's course, then end it. If you're still making
new episodes, I should be able to expect quality.

I don't begrudge any actor for leaving (success of TV actors who leave
successful shows can be questioned - were the Agency and a Jim Belushi
sitcom steps up?). They're not indentured servants. But not being
able to keep people isn't good for the consistency of a show,
particularly over such a short time period.
And, of course,
> we've not seen a complete cast overhaul yet.
Well, are Ally, Elaine and Fish are only original members left? How
many other cast members have come and gone?
First year John Cage
> wasn't even regular cast initially. He began as a Guest Star,
> remember?
Well, like what, episode 2 or something? Sure, a lot of the
characters started out as guests. The show's best season was 2, when
they introduced many of these characters. The show started as a
starring vehicle for Calista Flockhart, and became an ensemble piece -
for the better in my opinion. They were not easily replacable
supporting parts. And looking at last years new cast members, Downey
aside, they haven't exactly been good changes. Frankly, I really
started watching the show, regularly, rather than now and then, when
Ling started appearing. Ally wasn't that interesting - when Cage and
Fish and Ling started getting meatier parts, it became must see. Now
two of the 3 reasons I really watch are going. And I don't think Fish
is going to get a chance to help carry the show....

And, so far, have you seen something of the 5th year that makes you

According to how you define cast members, tons & tons, thank goodness,
as that's one of the marvels of this show, its use of talent.

Like till almost the end of the first year. His part, like Billy's &
wife's were all meant to be small temporary roles. They were beefed up
because this is a writer who can work with what is in front of him &
not be tied to something written in stone somewhere & he can do that
with both coming & going as well as with staying.

Which is where some of us hugely disagree! My faves in order are:
Season 1, Season 4, Season 2, Season 3. Clearly yours are different.
Yes, I grew to like, even love Ling, but, the show doesn't have to
have Ling, for me. At least I didn't continue to either hate her or be
bored with her, though, before she cut her involvement back. <g>
Personally my biggest gripe is, again, that we have to wait so long
for new episodes. Thank goodness I can get into PASADENA & my hope
that it will take off big-time between now & then, otherwise, FOX has
stopped being a channel I need to ever stop on. Neither Sunday nights
nor Monday nights this summer have drawn me to rewatch many of my FOX
faves.

It's not so much attrition of characters (shows like MASH and ER have
had lots of changes), it's all at once. Except for the one
politically correct purge, Law and Order has usually lost one actor a
year. There's still continuity from year to year, you just have to
get used to one new character among "friends". An overhaul is almost
like a new show....

I'll take your word for it, but the Cage character didn't appear at
all until the end of season one? I thought the whole prostitute

Boy, tell me what you liked about any of the new cast members last
year, outside of Downey. Also, I've always gotten the impression that
the general consensus is that Season 2 was the best, Season 3 the
worst, and you ordered the other two on how much you liked Downey. Of

Does anyone watch reruns anymore? Ratings are down all over for them.
Revenues for them are down. Society is changing. And it might have
to do with the fact you mention that the rerun season is now longer
than the real season (anyone old enough to remember shows ending in
June and starting up in September? I'm being to think it's like

Regular cast? No, Billy was regular cast originally, but, not meant to
stay after the first year, etc. We're not talking about a regular cast
of thousands, just a small ensemble that has people come in & out, not
even as many regulars as PF had.

Right, see above. He wasn't on a regular contract for most of the
first year, appeared as a Special Guest Star, each appearance
negotiated yea or nay according to the script, etc. Meant originally
to see very little of that partner, yadda yadda.

Loved Larry, loved Melanie, loved many people who dropped in & out,
who are you thinking of? The only regular cast, or recurring for a
long while I truly haven't liked in the past 2 years has been Mark, I
think.

Right, there were always people who adored Ling from day one just as
there were people who didn't, a'tall!

Sure, I'm 50. I remember when no one any of us knew had a TV & then
when someone had one but there was only one channel it could pick up.
And, yes, like most people, I watch fewer & fewer reruns at the same
time that I also have fewer & fewer shows in the summer that I didn't
get to see during the real season & want to see then. There were a few
FL reruns I wanted to see this summer & they weren't on. I wanted to
see O&A in reruns & there weren't any. Yup, weird. I rewatched a good
bit of the Melanie reruns & some of the Larry reruns on ALLY, compared
to the first season when I watched all of them over.
