Are you living with the shame of not understanding what the heck is
going on in JJ Abrams's ABC series "Lost"? Did you only pretend to
have any idea what was up with the whole Rimbaldi thing on Abrams's
"Alias"?
Don't be embarrassed - you're not alone.
"I was at my friend Greg Grunberg's house year ago -- he was on
'Alias' and Heroes' now -- ...and 'Alias' was on," Abrams told TV
critics at Summer TV Press Tour 2008. "He put it on and I was watching
and I wasn't thinking about it. I watched a few minutes and was so
confused. I was like, literally, it was impenetrable. I was like: 'I
know I should understand this. I read the - who the [expletive] is
THAT guy?!'"

I still wonder how they were winging it with that show day to
day......... wierd.
But he's got Lost down, right?

--- Of course not. What could make you possibly think that show has
been making any sense and that whatever finale it comes up with in a
couple of years, it will have been worth sitting through 6 years of
it? Abrams has nothing earth-shattering enough to reveal what's
behind the Lost mystery, it'll be as anti-climactic as it can get and,
consequently, the whole series itself will end up being a densely-
crafted by ultimately hollow experiment in spontaneity.
Reminds me of when Chris Carter admitted they had no idea what they
were doing with the Conspiracy Mytharc of The X Files. They threw a
few things out there and suddenly THAT became a huge part of the
popularity and they never really had any idea how to play it out. It
sucks too, because that show was on FIRE going into the theatrical
movie, which did pretty good business, then it completely fell apart
the next season and no one cared during the last couple of years after
Duchovney sort of left. It is similar to Goldberg in WCW, after he
won the title over Hogan, Eric had no freaking clue what to do with
him.
If the X Files had ended the TV show the year before or year after the
Movie, and had a plan they could have done a Star Trek thing and had a
movie every 3 years.
It will be interesting if many people give this new movie a chance.
I liked Alias, but they just crammed plot twist after plot twist.
Storylines that could have played out over 8 episodes or longer were
spun out in ONE, so by the time the 3rd season rolled around, they had
had enough plot for ten seasons.
I have never gotten into LOST but I may try to catch it in reruns or
DVDs.
Joss Whedon is the only one who really "got" how to have stand alone
episodes, with an overreaching "Big Bad" each season AND an ongoing
flow of the characters getting older and changing. The only reason
Angel ended so abruptly is they found out the show was ending in the
middle of a season....but that show really had a great mix of mytharc,
intrigue and character development.
A show with a "mythology" is great if done right, but it is VERY hard
to do. I wish wrestling would work more like that sometimes. There is
a lot of history they could use a la soap operas or an Angel type
show. It could play into DVDs and the like.
One show I am into now that doesn't really have ENOUGH mytharc to fit,
but could, is Burn Notice. That is a mighty fine little gem on USA
cable.
Someone said in the other thread that JJ had little to do with Alias
after the first season.

We must change the way we live,
or the climate will do it for us.
JJ Abrams has little to do with anything. You just have to look at the
long list of stuff he's supposedly doing now to know that he's nothing
more than a figurehead name who just rubberstamps other people's ideas.
You mean he's like a producer?
He's not even that useful. It's simply a case of having his
"hot-new-toy" name on th front to sell more seats.
