All the kids (including the two new ones) have biblical names, except I can't
locate the source of Lucy's name. Is there a Lucy in the Bible, or was she
named after an aunt or grandparent or something? The closest I can find in
the Bible are either Lucius or Luke. Anybody?

Lucy, I have a feeling, came from Luke...which is biblical.

Is Lucille a biblical name? Maybe that is what she is named after

She may come after biblical times, but isn't there a Saint Lucy (Santa Lucia)?

Maybe Lucille is a family name, like one of Eric's or Annie's
grandparents.

OK, based upon reading everyone's postings on this subject for the past
several months, and my own research and highly scientific intuition and
guesstimation, I've made up the following totally unauthorized story about
the naming of the Camden children:

The Camdens decided to name their children after prominent people in the
Bible who had books named after them. The obvious first choices would be the
"4 gospels," Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. They named their first son
Matthew John, because Matthew Mark sounded too alliterative, and Matthew Luke
sounded like a refugee from "Friends." Their first daughter became Mary,
being only one letter away from Mark, and, of course, also being the name of
several prominent women in the New Testament. Her full name would be Mary
Elizabeth, representing Jesus' mother and grandmother. Their second daughter
was named Lucy, comprising the first two letters of Luke, and obviously short
for Lucius, a Latin translation of Luke, or (feminized), Lucia (also a
Saint's name--Santa Lucia). Her name might be Lucia Magdalena, which has a
nice Italian sound about it, and would represent Mary Magdalene, one of the
more prominent members of the Jesus entourage. Having covered the major
gospel writers, for the second son, they used the name of Jesus' best bud,
Simon Peter, which I'm quite certain is Simon's full name. For the third
daughter, the Camdens switched to the Old Testament, and named her for the
only (?) female-named book of the Bible, Ruth. I would imagine her full name
is Ruth Naomi, after the biblical Ruth's mother-in-law, who played a
prominent role in that story. And finally (we would hope...?), David and
Samuel, who also are Old Testament bigwigs. I'll leave it up to the crowd to
decide what their middle names are. However, I liked someone's idea that
they were named Sam and Dave, after the musicians, which would make sense,
considering the Reverend's past "profession" as a band member.

This is totally fictional, of course, and may be entirely different from the
show's own "bible,", but until we hear otherwise from the authorities, I'm now
satisfied that I "know" the truth. Feel free to use these explanations, or
share your own ideas. Thanks to everyone whose postings I borrowed from!

Feastday of St Lucy is 13 December. She is the paton saint of those with
eye problems. There is a Church dedicated to her in Long Beach,
Califoria. In St Josrph Church in Marysville, California there is a
beutiful stained glass window of her. Santa Lucia ora pro nobis!

In the Catholic Bible there is also a Book of Judith.

You're right! Thanks! (Of course, the Camdens aren't Catholic, so they
probably don't even read the Apocrypha, although probably the Rev has read it
during his seminary days, at least.)

I'll bet he has a Catholic bible in his bookcase. He had the book on Buddhism
that Lucy wanted when she was trying to decide what religion she was going to be
(like she REALLY had a choice).

I like your hypothesis. One minor point of correction in answer to your
question mark: There are two Bible books named for women. The other one is
the book of Esther.

Thanks! I forgot about the E-woman! Okay, so Ruthie is either Ruth Naomi
Camden or Ruth Esther Camden. (Now, personally, I think Ruthie would have a
valid justification for being the brat she is, if they named her "Esther". My
apologies to all the Esther's out there...)

I should mention about my remark that "Matthew Luke" sounded like a refugee
from "Friends": I think I was confusing Matthew Perry and Luke Perry. But I
guess in some convoluted way, that makes nonsense.

She's a middle child. She gets left out of everything even the bible names.

Lucy is a female derivative of Luke from the Greek derivative Lucius. Ruthie serves a double meaning as she is named after her father's mother and Ruth in the Bible.
