Yukitomo Umashika, dressed neatly in a pair of freshly minted Levis 501s and
a yellow Ralph Lauren polo shirt (What his research had told him all serious
American college students wear), was fuming. He was relatively calm after he
had wasted the entire morning behind another Japanese exchange student (who
probably couldn't even get into a Japanese junior college, let alone a
Japanese university, judging from the way she dressed) chat with some
idiotic female unmarried gum-chewing clerk (why wasn't she serving tea to
the men, anyway?) at the registrar's office. Then, when he got to the
window, this _woman_ said that they couldn't accept his transfer credits
from Japan. The worst part was when she wrote down the name of his school as
KO. KO! Keio, one of the most prestigious schools in Japan and this idiotic
woman writes KO. She then has the unmitigated gall to say, 'like in boxing,
huh?'
Still, he managed to keep his temper, helped by the fact that he hadn't
learned any strong enough words to display his true feelings, as well as
simple truth that he only had figured out what she said while walking to the
school union to get something to drink. But then he came to the school union

you'd have to look at the entire document (over 400 lines) to
appreciate this man's (Tomei's) determination to harass and the

for me to read these fantasies and be annoyed

but i have skimmed through them to see if they contain

You really should! And you should be honored to have been fictionalized in
such a wonderful literary piece. I was totally enthralled by Yukitomos
adventure at the racist, Anglo-Saxon university. His brooding introspection
reminds me of Salingers Catcher in the Rye. Wonderful! Read it.
The fact that someone would write such a wonderful short story to put you in
your place, Tanaka (in lieu of the routine NG post) shows that Tomei is
truly a Renaissance Man.

Sorry folks, couldn't help myself with the free plug. Tomoyuki, you did
leave yourself wide open, considering you actually said you wouldn't
link to this FAQ because it makes no mention of your FAQs (no reason to:

2000 = total number of Yugoslavs (Albanians and Serbs) killed

5000 = number of Yugoslavs USA/NATO killed. TIME, 1999 June 14, p.50
(actually, i heard the number 7000 in the middle
of USA's bombing spree.)
--------------------------------------------------------------------
X-URL: http://www.softmakers.com/fry/docs/chomintyug.htm
MLF: You don't believe that the reason for the NATO action
was to rescue the Kosovo Albanians from oppression?
NC: It is virtually inconceivable on rational grounds and
there are simple reasons for that. One reason is simply
Kosovo itself. Up until the US/NATO bombing March 24th,
there had been, according to NATO, 2000 people killed on
all sides, and a couple of hundred thousand refugees.

-- 4. What's up with TT's weird capitalization?
>
> Not bothering to capitalize the first letter in each
> sentence makes your writing look like "pidgin English"

there are mainly three reasons i do this.
1. i used to do a lot of computer (Lisp) work and i picked up
the Hacker Writing Style.
see description in Hofstadter's book "Metamagical Themas".
i'm surprised that this "all lowercase" convention is
mentioned in the Jargon File only indirectly:
"Hacker Writing Style"
http://WWW.ITD.Emory.Edu/Jargon30/INTRO/HACKWRIT.HTML
[...]
One quirk that shows up frequently in the email
style of UNIX hackers in particular is a tendency
for some things that are normally all-lowercase
(including usernames and the names of commands
and C routines) to remain uncapitalized even
when they occur at the beginning of sentences. [...]
you could say that i'm simply pushing the {logical
capitalization/punctuation} further than described in
the Jargon File.
(let me know if you find a good URL describing my convention.)
2. not bothering about this form of capitalization makes
editing (moving clauses around) easier. and more
importantly, it lets me avoid paying too much attention
to form --- since the text looks sloppy anyway, it keeps
me from editing too much.
3. i picked up this habit most directly from David Chalmers.
(see <alt.fan.hofstadter> and "GEB" FAQ)
http://www.cs.indiana.edu/hyplan/tanaka/FAQs.html
in email and Usenet posts he wrote everything in
lowercase, even words like ai (AI, artificial
intelligence).
when i started writing this way, i immediately noticed
something interesting.
when someone named David Chalmers is writing everything
in lowercase, nobody says anything about it. but when
someone named Tanaka Tomoyuki is doing the same thing,
white Americans often make remarks such as,
"Come on, Tanaka-san. Don't they teach how to
use capitol letters in your Jap schools?"

OK. I think in the midst of this arcana there are two hints (this is like
interpreting the Dead Sea Scrolls). Hint #1 is that you don't have
a particularly sophisticated workstation/PC. Well, it doesn't require
much horsepower to display/input Japanese. I was doing it on an 8088
10 years ago. The freeware DOS version of NJSTAR is still around.
Hint #2 is that despite near-omniscience in computer science, you don't
know everything, implying that the gaps in your knowledge are such that you
are unable to install/use Japanese fonts. Well as I am sure you will have
realised, this group is bursting with people who can halp you on virtually
every platform known to mankind (I could even give you some tips for
Acorns and Amigas.)
So.... I suspect:
(a) you are romancing just a little about your graduate CS status, or
(b) your grasp of computer concepts is too limited for you to extrapolate
your skills to installing fonts, or
(c) you don't actually *own* a computer, are limited to public labs at
Davis or wherever, and can't easily install other files.

Any particular reason to stick with it?
I would buy a software like System Commander (or an equivalent)
and install a Windows95/98-DOS/V version on my computer.
I think getting a Win95jp is a better choice since Win98jp has a
bug to cause the system to frequently stop, about a month after
its installation. Otherwise, you can ask someone back home to
send a cheap used Win9xjp CD-ROM from Japan via FedEx etc.
The ability to handle Japanese language on your computer will
bring you a new world. It really is a waste not to have any access
to the Japanese newsgroups/websites.
===
Some say System Commander doesn't work when installing
systems such as the combination of Win98en and Win98jp.
although I think you'll probably find something better than SC.
Anyhow, this kind of questions about multiple installation of
operating systems pop up here, life.in-japan, and japan.comp.
groups once in a while, giving us enough information to solve
the problem.

Tomei could be one of the Vietnam vets., and many
of them are junkies and insane. Have you tried to get
his public record? Though I haven't, you might find
some interesting criminal history of Mr.Tomei.
very true.
if a Jp college teacher in Japan were distributing similar
perverted fantasies about a _FEMALE_ student somewhere and that
studented complained, that teacher would get immediately
reprimanded (probably just a warning).
but Tomei is a paranoid individual with a morbid victim mentality.
Tomei with other paranoid gaijings are promoting a
campaign regarding perceived/alleged discrimination
against gaijin (mostly white American) teachers in Japan.
the university would be afraid to approach Tomei because
he would cry "discrmination!" and other similar gaijins
will rally to his rescue.
another reason the university would be reluctant to
approach Tomei is Tomei's limited Japanese.
>
>If Mr.Tomei hasn't done anything wrong, what should he be afraid of?

exactly.
when Joseph Tomei first started distributing his perverted
fantasies (with me as the main character), i said that i found
it creepy/scary and i asked him to stop it.
apparently that pleased that sick individual and Joseph Tomei
cranked out a few more of his perverted fantasies.
i don't think Charles M Richmond is a hypocrite.
Richmond used to harass male Japanese students in ways similar
to Tomei's methods. so Richmond's being consistent.
(see attached below)
if Tomei were teaching in a US school, would he harass me (or
another Jp student) the way he did? good question.
probably not. Tomei's gaijin status protects him ... just like
US soldiers get special treatment in Jp prisons.

Subject: abuse by Charles Richmond <c...@iisc.com>, a postmaster
[this file contains some of the supporting documents.]
for over 2 years a man named Charles Richmond <c...@iisc.com> has
been fanatically harassing various people (mainly Japanese
nationals), by harassing e-mail and Usenet posts.
we are troubled by his misbehavior, and many people have written
to his postmaster, only to be surprised by rude replies from
Charles Richmond himself, who is the postmaster and the
president of the company <@iisc.com>.
please discourage Richmond from continuing such behavior.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Richmond's harassment consists of doing the following to persons
he dislikes (mainly Japanese nationals).
(1) sending harassing email to the person (the victim), and to
his professors.
Richmond also sent annoying email to a female acquaintance
of mine, who had not contacted Richmond in any way.
(2) making false and outrageous statements about persons he
dislikes (like calling someone a "pedophile").
(3) repeatedly sending frivolous accusations to the victim's
postmaster. since Richmond's accusations are groundless,
all of these complaints are ignored.
(4) repeatedly posting harassing articles to the victim's
university-local Usenet groups, where Richmonds posts
are annoying and unwelcome.
(5) propagating hate speech. calling a victim of a hate crime
an "asshole". falsely accusing him of immoral acts, etc.
i have supporting documentation for these abuses by Richmond.

where did you get that bit about [Vincent Chin] harassing a
stripper?
i have studied the case carefully, and there is no such
description anywhere.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Vincent Chin was beaten to death with a baseball bat by two
white men.
according to the witnesses, Ebens first started harassing Chin
by saying (among other things) "It's because of you (little)
motherfuckers that we are out of work." Ebens called Chin a "boy".
Among Chin's replies were "I'm not a boy." and "Don't call me a

hi. thanks for the information.
some of the reasons i like(d) shodouka :
-- it's only a few times a year that i'd want to read something
in Jp on the computer.
-- which is partly because of slow modem connections.
i use Lynx (character based browser) 99% of the time.
-- i haven't seen an official closing announcement from shodouka.

it'd be at least another month before i can make room

the weird thing about Tomei's victim mentality is that in
reality he has benefited immensely from being a white American.
here's a man who's unable to communicate clearly in English, who
behaves in a way unfit to be a teacher (harassment, Kamikaze
joke, etc) and he has benefited immensely from the preferential
treatment he received in Japan for his race and national origin.
if a Jp college teacher in Japan
(who is prejudiced against _Koreans_, in a way similar
to the way Tomei is prejudiced against the Japanese)
were distributing similar racist jokes
(a Kimuchi joke perhaps, like Tomei's Kamikaze joke)
and distributing similar perverted fantasies about a _Korean_
student somewhere and that studented complained, that teacher
would get immediately reprimanded (probably just an oral warning
at first).
The following URL shows that the kamikaze joke was made by someone
completely different.
And the following URL is a post by Mr. Tanaka demonstrating that yes he
was aware that Mr. Fic was the person who made the kamikaze joke.
http://www.mail-archive.com/fuku...@ucsd.edu/msg04475.html
I repeat Mr. Tanaka is a liar, and anyone who believes anything he says
is a fool.
Actually Mr. Tanaka, I looked forward to seeing you on DFS. I remember
watching you early in the days of soc.culture.japan, and admired you for
your tenacity in pointing out to everyone something that was really
common knowledge to me. That yes the US does indeed show racism to
minorities at times, and that people from upper class white backgrounds
who come over here to Japan and are shocked, just shocked to find out
that people look at them differently because of their color are not
worthy of much sympathy. But straight out lying about someone the way
you are is wrong. You better learn to tell the truth or you are going to
have a very short legal career (California probably disbars more people
than Japan makes lawyers every year, and lying to a judge is going to
get you in real hot water).
Its a shame that you seem to be incapable of holding your self to the
standards that you expect from everyone else.

The Vincent Chin case was perhaps the first national
case that galvanized the asian american community against
anti-asian violence and that such acts should not
be tolerated or that justice will not be served because
perpetrators happen to be white. Curious that blacks
could actually have a bias crime treated as such while
it took all these years for asian americans to actually
be treated as equal citizens under the law.

Yep. Guess which FAQ has information on doing just that. makes me wonder
why he went and installed netscape, when he has a serious, nay, chronic,
shortage of hard disk space, and a a self-perceived bandwidth problem
which makes the graphic-intensive nature of Shoudoka burdensome.
I am sure NJWIN doesn't take as much hdd space as netscape, so the disk
space problem is relieved, and teh non-download of graphics which make
more efficient use of the limited bandwidth.
Problem solved!

Actually, upon reading it, I thought Mr. Tomei
must be a big fan of Voltaire....

I'm sorry if my comments seemed irrelevant to you. I was merely pointing
out that it is possible to use lynx to read documents written in scripts
other than Roman. Mr. Tanaka said he had a slow connection and used lynx
99% of the time, and so it seemed rather a relevant point to make.

My original post was made under the assumption that if Mr. Tanaka is
using lynx, he is running Linux or some other kind of Unix, hence my
reference to the cxterm program. I wasn't aware until a few minutes ago
that it is available for machines running MS-DOS, etc.

i have no idea what you mean. if you're thinking about anything
that can be construed as "email bombing", that's a terrible idea.
when you're dealing with a sly and sneaky bigot (like Tomei)
you have to careful how you go about it.

i finally found a computer on campus with njstar so i could read
Mr Nakanishi's letter to Kumagaku Univ President.
http://www.deja.com/=dnc/getdoc.xp?AN=504535344.1
very well written letter.
i'd be happy to explain linguistic details in the letter.
toward the end Mr Nakanishi mentions that Jp people in Japan are
talking about Joseph Tomei's harassment in <fj.???> or
<japan.???> NGs. since i can read Jp on the computer (for now)
i'd like to read these. where can i find them?

Because of Tomei's rather childish postings, it'll be easier
for me to send emails to Kumagaku without losing my
credibility. I'll also send an email to the postmaster (who
apparently is not doing his job properly) suggesting him of
printing out the emails and sending directly to an overseeing
department, possibly the office of the Pres. of Kumagaku.

the postmaster there wrote me about a week ago(?) saying they
are investigating the J.Tomei problem.
i suppose that Jp universities are slow in setting up procedures
for handling abuse (sexual harassment, faculty misconduct), and
handle them more ad-hoc, or on a case-by-case basis.
and the reason for this is that Eichers and Tomeis are much
rarer in Japan.
several years ago there was a case at Univ. of Michigan (?)
which was like Tomei's perverted fantasies: a male student was
posting on Usenet (?) long perverted fantasies with a particular
female student in the same university as the main character.
this cyberstalker was convicted of a crime, aggravated stalking
or something like that.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
under US law Tomei's perverted fantasies would not be {libel},
since he presented it as fiction. Tomei recently found out the
email addresses of professors at my university and sent them
annoying email containing false statements about me. that would
be libel.

What did the emails say?

Yes.
I found a site similar to shodouka.
http://www.embjapan.org.uk/viewer.html
It's slower than shodouka used to be, with less functions.
You can view most Japanese webpages through this site pretty okay, but you
can't view your Japanese hotmail message. You may upload your Japanese
message to your free www.geocities.com site or somewhere, then you can view
it through this viewer.html.
Cheers,
Mitch
thanks for the great info.
i tried to read the following page.
the first line looks ok, but most of the rest of the post is

General
The Japanese are a polite and reserved people. Etiquette is
considered very important. Although they do not expect
Westerners to understand or follow their customs, it is
appreciated when Westerners make an effort to follow Japanese
manners.

Eating and drinking
It is usual to hold or touch one's glass when one's host is
refilling it, otherwise it is presumed that one does not want
to drink. Usually one should wait for the glass to be
refilled by someone else. Likewise you should fill other
people's glasses when necessary.
Here are some things to avoid doing with chopsticks:
* one should not cross them or put them sticking up in a
rice bowl (this has associations with death);
* do not pass food chopstick to chopstick;
* push food or plates around;
* wave or point them when drinking from a bowl.
We have further basic information at JICC available on
request, but first look at these two excellent web sites for
an in-depth look into etiquette:
