City Cop Charged
With Shooting His Wife

By ROBERT GEARTY and MIKE CLAFFEY
Daily News Staff Writers

A city cop who allegedly shot his wife in the face and left her for dead at
the couple's Suffolk County home early yesterday was arrested while riding a
Long Island Rail Road train to work, authorities said.

Police Officer Anthony Tamburro, 31, was charged with shooting his wife of
three years. She was in bed, just waking up, at about 4 a.m., Suffolk police
said.

Elizabeth Tamburro, 32, was in critical but stable condition at University
Medical Center at Stony Brook following four hours of surgery, authorities
said.

Cops were called to the house on Glenmere Lane in Coram by Elizabeth
Tamburro's 14-year-old son from a previous marriage.

Unable to speak because of a bullet in her jaw, she communicated with police
through gestures and writing that her husband, assigned to the Central Park
Precinct, was riding a train to his job, cops said.

"She had written that he was wearing a bright yellow jacket, so he was easy
to locate," said Suffolk Police Lt. William Costello.

Suffolk cops found Tamburro's car at the Ronkonkoma station and radioed
ahead to Deer Park, where officers boarded the train and took him into
custody.

Tamburro, who has been on the force since 1991, was carrying his NYPD-issued
9-mm. Glock pistol, which police believe was used in the shooting. Ballistic
tests were pending.

Police Commissioner Howard Safir said Tamburro "had a history of domestic
violence," but did not know whether the NYPD had been notified about the
problem and said he had no additional details.

Suffolk Police said they had a record of a prior incident at the house, in
which the officer had complained about his wife.

On March 9, after one of the couple's sons cut his lip, Tamburro called 911
to complain his wife had thrown a dish towel at him, a Suffolk police source
said.

Once cops arrived, he declined to press charges, the source said.

Yesterday's incident would mark the third time since September in which a
city cop shot his wife.

Officer Patrick Fitzgerald fatally shot his wife and two daughters before
killing himself on Sept. 25 in Orange County. Detective Fred Jesselli
fatally shot his wife and himself Oct. 20 in Staten Island.

Neighbors of the Tamburros said yesterday that there was no obvious signs of
trouble in the marriage.

"I just saw them putting Christmas decorations up on Sunday and everything
seemed fine," said Mary Cover, 71, a next-door neighbor. "I see him outside
playing with his 2-year-old son all the time, giving him piggy-back rides."

I don't have a reference, but I heard at a seminar once that number one
occupation of men who assault their wives is: you guessed it, police
officer.

Such intelligence
such verbosity
makes one highly credible.

It maybe it hard to understand but lengthy (very short) articles full of
opinion and verbosity tends to diminish the credibility of the writer. If one
can be concise, terse and pack an intellectual punch,
his/her point comes across better.
Unfortunately, I find there tend to be a lot of posters who'd rather see
their words on the monitor than make a point.

The way I see it is this: there are no more wife abusers in the polic population
than there in the male population as a whole. In other words, it has nothing to do
with the man's occupation and everything to do with how he sees women.

With all due respect, Wolf, you're wrong.

Do a little homework on the subject and you'll find that
cops -- like 'em or not -- have a higher incidence of dom-
estic abuse, alcoholism and suicide than mostother pro-
fessions in the U.S.

Can't blame 'em, really. I imagine if one spends their days
exposed to scum, pretty soon the whole world starts look-
ing like scum -- and it's gotta be awfully hard to go home
happy.

Ain't that right, Joseph?

Cheers!

Hello,

That is correct. And it is due to the fact that cops face more stress than
the average person, being put on the frontlines by societal leaders, and
ordered to enforce the perverse and irrational and malevolent "rule of law"
upon citizen-slaves.

No, that's not the reason why they have a higher suicide, domestic violence,
and alcoholism rate. The reason is that most cops, on SOME level of their True
Reality, are REPULSED by their own profession. They KNOW, on some level, that
what they are doing, in enforcing societal law, is WRONG, irrational,
hypocritical, and malevolent. They cannot FULLY accept this fact, and so they
are prone to turning their suppressed rage and hate inward, resulting in
suicide, self abuse, or family violence.

I don't like to be called Joseph. I sign my posts with JOE. Calling me JOE is
acceptable, as is calling me Joe. Joseph is not acceptable. But it is a little
more acceptable than Joey. Call me Joey, and you risk excommunication.

Take care, JOE
