Hello Maggie,

Yup, John Holliman is indeed dead as a doornail, as of today. I'm a big
watcher of CNN and all other news networks and so was very familiar with John.
He did die in a car accident, with apparently no type of criminal activity
involved.

You can link to a message board dedicated to John, view a photo of John, as
well as read other articles about him, by going to the following URL:

He was only 49. Oh well, we all gotta die sometime. I'm surprised that a
MAJOR nationwide news anchor or reporter has NEVER actually been murdered, in
recent years, in the USA. There have been some local news anchors who were
slaughtered, but as far as I can recall, never a nationally known newsperson.

Just yesterday John was on the air, for CNN, reporting on the Starr/Lewinsky
report. Here yesterday, gone today. And so the wheel of life comes to a
grinding and abrupt halt.

Take care, JOE

CNN's John Holliman dies in car crash

09/12/98

ATLANTA (CNN) -- CNN national assignment reporter John Holliman died early
Saturday morning from injuries sustained in a car accident. He was 49.

Holliman joined CNN in 1980 as part of the network's original reporting team
and was the first correspondent hired for the Washington, D.C., bureau.

He was one of only three journalists reporting from Baghdad in January 1991
when the allied air attack began on Iraq's capital during the Gulf War. He and
colleagues Peter Arnett and Bernard Shaw played critical roles in CNN's
coverage of the crisis, which won a National Headliner Award, the George Foster
Peabody Award and a Golden Microphone Award.

Holliman reported on Internet coverage of the Starr report release on Friday

Holliman also served as the network's lead reporter for the Pathfinder mission
to Mars in summer 1997.

In June 1989, Holliman covered China's historic student demonstrations and the
subsequent government crackdown and Chinese Communist Party purge. That fall,
he served as CNN's on-site reporter during Hurricane Hugo.

During his 18-year tenure at CNN, Holliman also had covered agriculture and the
White House and had served as chief daytime Washington, D.C., anchor.

Before joining CNN, Holliman was an agriculture editor at The Associated Press
Radio Network where he worked from 1974 until 1980. In that position, he
covered all aspects of agricultural and food-related news of interest to
farmers and consumers. He also wrote a daily column for AP's broadcast wire as
well as farm stories for AP's national newspaper wire. In addition, he taught a
course at the graduate school of the U.S. Department of Agriculture in Atlanta.

Holliman's journalistic career included stints as a newscaster and reporter for
Metromedia Radio News and WASH-FM in Washington, D.C. Holliman also worked at a
number of radio stations, including WSB-AM/FM in Atlanta and WGAU-Radio and
WRFC-Radio in Athens, Georgia.

Holliman received a 1976 Peabody Award for his documentary, "The Garden Plot --
Food as a Weapon in International Diplomacy." He received a bachelor's degree
in journalism from the University of Georgia.

CNN correspondent John Holliman killed in auto accident

September 12, 1998

ATLANTA (CNN) -- John Holliman, who with Bernard Shaw and Peter Arnett stunned
a global audience with exclusive live reporting on CNN of the 1991 air raids on
Baghdad, died this morning in an automobile accident near his home in suburban
Atlanta. He was 49.

Holliman joined CNN in early 1980 as part of the original CNN reporting team
and was the first correspondent hired for the Washington, D.C., bureau.

"John Holliman was one of a kind -- a CNN original," said Tom Johnson, CNN News
Group chairman. "He passionately loved his family, his friends and his job.
John's smile, his humor and his contagious optimism brightened the lives of all
who met him. He was simply one of the most loved members of the CNN family.

"John was also a terrific journalist. As one of the 'boys of Baghdad,' he
showed great courage reporting as allied bombs fell all around them."

"John was so enthusiastic about his upcoming assignment to co-anchor with
Walter Cronkite the return to space of John Glenn. I expect he'll be up there
watching the mission from the heavens, probably shouting, 'Holy cow, what a
sight!'"
