Grrr... I was watching 48 Hours/Hard Evidence about the 17-year old who
stabbed and killed a church deacon that tried to rape him. Right at the
end of the Tivo-recorded episode, the narrator said "he plead guilty to
voluntary manslaughter and" and then the it cut off!! As a reflex I
deleted the episode before going back and getting the boy's full name.
His first name was Sterling.

Anyone know what the outcome was?

I was able to come up with this...

A 17-year-old accused of murdering a church deacon claimed that he acted
in self-defense because the deacon was trying to molest him. A jury
found him guilty and he was sentenced to life in prison. With the help
of a new attorney, he awaits a new trial.

While awaiting a new trial he reportedly plead guilty to voluntary
manslaughter. I was wondering if his plea was accepted, and if so, if he
got any additional prison time, and/or credit for time served. If
nothing else I guess i will have to tune in 11/13 and extent the Tivo

It is a pisser. I know Sterling didn't do what everyone thinks they
would do in the same situation (e.g., a few too many stabs), but he was
just a (seemingly tuff) kid, and he did have a prior incident of being
molested, which may have sparked an exaggerated reaction. I don't know
if I feel for him so much because of what happened, which sucked - both
what was tried on him, and then that he was put inn a situation to which
he had to react; of course the fact the judge refused a bunch of
evidence and witness testimony *really* sucked; but also he looks and
acts almost *exactly* like my son did at 15, especially (wrt looks) that
pic of him with his hair parted in the middle. It makes me feel like I
kinda understand his personality and reasoning, and I believe he is
sincere about not knowing exactly why he did things quite the way he
did, etc.

Anyway, at least 21 months isn't life + 40. It seems deep down he is a
decent young man, so I hope he has turned the corner, won't look back,
and will have a good future.

I had taped this story and just got around to watching it. It made me
absolutely sick! I cant believe the results of that trial. The judge
should be ashamed of himself. He let 2 of the 5 men who Doug had
molested testify and said all he got out of the testimony is that it
IS possible to get away from a child molester without killing them.
GRRRR I am so angry right now. Doug's wife knew he was a child
molester and she can still sit there and say this boy needs to be in
prison!?

I would like to add this comment about the Sterling Barber case. I
watched a BBC documentary about South Africa one time. In that
documentary it showed a video about the locals stabbing a collaborater
of the police. The stabbing was quite dramatic. A man ran up and
stabbed the offender in the back. Nothing happened. The man doing
the stabbing pulled his knife out and looked at it. He commenced to
stab him several more times. It took 10 or more stabbing to show any
effect before the man stabbed collapsed. It explains why Sterling
Barber stabbed the pervert so many times. An yes, why was his wife
defending the child molester. Why was she not trying to help the
child that was defending himself against her husband. disguisting.

something about the whole situation doesn't read with me....
there is an air of theatricality about that kid...and i sense he's

Sterling Barber was re-tried and plead guilty to involuntary
manslaughter. He served an additional 21 months in jail. Thank God
that Sterlings story was told and viewers were kind enough to help him
post his bail. It's terrible that injustices like this happen in the
first place when one can't afford appropriate legal council.

I heard about this story for the first time tonight after watching it
on 48 Hours: Hard Evidence. I am amazed! Shocked! I am bothered by the
fact that the justice system failed as it did the first time around.
Thank goodness for the viewers who donated money to post bond (his
bond was $100,000.00) and for the generous attorney who volunteered
his time and services for the second trial. This victim should not
have spent a single day in jail, but at least he didn't get the life
sentence + 40 years given at the end of the first sentence. This never
should have happened, and this poor young man should not have lost
five years of his life. There is now one less child molester on the
streets and Sterling Barber is a hero!

Someone finally filled me in on the outcome. Apparently Sterling was
given a new trial, and was found guilty of something lesser than the
original verdict, and ended up doing another 21 months or thereabouts.
So - at least he didn't end up doing life in prison for it.

I went to the Georgia State Corrections and evidentally, he did get
five years for voluntary
manslaughter, got time credited because he was released in July of
2001, but that is
only an assumption on my part as I just did a little math from what
the tv show aired.
Mr. Barber was in jail for almost 3 and a half years and was sentenced
to five years. He then
went back in and was released in 2001. Hopefully, he has gotten out
of that town and is moving on.
I was appauled by his family stating that Sterling took their fathers
life without them acknowledging
how many childrens lives (as in innocence) he took away and
terrorized. But denial is a strange thing,
no matter how many bricks hit you in the head.

I am so sorry for what you had to go through. You are right. Re: Sterling Barber, when you are attacked you do what you can. There is no way to measure in that moment how much is too much, or too little, to stop the rape. If the rapist dies, too bad.

Who in their right mind in a situation of danger, in this case rape, stops and has an academic discussion of the pros & cons of defending themself and then decides to react in a way that is acceptable to the law? The basic law of survival is "flight or flght". The chance of successfully fleeing on foot when the perpetrator is in a car is slim. So fight becomes an option. He plead guilty to manslaughter and got 21 months with 12 months probation-He is free now I think-

At his attorneys suggestion he pled guilty to a lesser crime. Sentenced to 5 years therefore he was remanded for 21 additional months. To complete the 60 month (12 months Xs 5 years) sentence. He has been free since completion of the maximum 60 months.

I was yelling at the tv just couldn't believe how that first so called 'judge' acted and how that investigator or cop or whatever he was was POSITIVE it was Sterling and that he did it just to do it with malice and that he's a murderer! unbelievable!! After friends of family bailed him out, the 2nd trial was held, he agreed to a plea deal and the sentence was time served. As someone well versed in what many kids face in foster care, it is no stretch of the imagination that Sterling was molested as a child, but either way, this case is one where Sterling defended himself, and none of us could know how we would react until in that moment.
You say that Sterling was out to rob this child molester but consider some facts here. No one in Sterling's little town even knew the deacon had a history. That man had a history is making up fake reasons to get a child alone to assault them, including his last molestation charge where this deacon used a gun to have his way. That charge was agravated sodomy which means he raped that other young man.
You obviously have no experience with rape and the damage it does a person, but you should consider those who also managed to escape and their pain. They fell for the deacon's lies like Sterling did. He was a 17 year old, just done school, hanging out at the only place open, something many kids do, when the deacon, pretending to be a private eye from out of town offered him an easy 40 bucks cash to drive him around a few hours. I totally agree. His wife was just as responsible too! She knew for years he was molesting kids yet she did nothing about it, and she had 2 kids with him who could of been in just as much danger. They have no idea what he might occur done when alone and changing nappies etc. It's a horrible thought but it happens far to often.
I feel Sterling should of been given time served and left alone to live his life.

I know what it's like to be a victim and to fear hearing footsteps in the dark, or a voice or touch waking me in my sleep and I would of done anything to of made it stop but I was just to little. Death of Doug Wyatt, Trial of Sterling Barber
SUMMARY: In a small town in Georgia, a 17 year old man is charged with murder. He alleges it was self defense, fending off the now dead older man who attempted to sexually assault him. The investigation, the trial, the judge, the deceased and the defendant all came under scrutiny with many questions raised about the legal process and about the character of pretty much everyone involved.

THE STORY: On November 27, 1995, Ferroll “Sterling” Barber was 17 years old, hanging out at a Petro Truck Stop near his hometown of Carnesville, Georgia. According to Barber, Gerald “Doug” Wyatt approached him, claimed to be a private investigator from Atlanta who needed someone local to help him with a case he was working. Barber agreed to drive Wyatt, in Wyatt’s car, to a nearby town. At some point, Wyatt asked Barber to pull over so Wyatt could urinate. Wyatt returned to the vehicle with his pants undone and unzipped, threw himself on top of Barber and tried to choke him. Barber was able to retrieve a knife he habitually carried and stabbed Wyatt in the neck and shoulder. Wyatt rolled off of Barber, at which time Barber stabbed Wyatt five more times in the leg and groin. Barber then dragged Wyatt, still alive and asking “Why did you do that,” out of the car, several feet into the woods, took Wyatt’s wrist watch (and perhaps his wallet,) and left him there with his pants now down around his ankles, to bleed to death. Barber then got back in Wyatt’s car and drove off.

The exact chronology and events that followed remain a bit clouded, but apparently Barber drove Wyatt’s car to his mother’s home where he bathed and changed clothes. Barber and his mother went through Wyatt’s briefcase, and per Barber, his mother advised against involving police, wanting to retain an attorney first. Also at his mother’s advice, Barber abandoned Wyatt’s car on a dirt road near the Petro Truck Stop. Barber (either before or after ditching the vehicle,) went to the Echo Diner and ordered steak and ice cream which he paid for with a bloody twenty dollar bill, according to the woman working there at the time. (Barber apparently had worked at that restaurant and she was a co-worker of his at some point, as well, so they knew each other.) She stated that he said it was deer blood, and Barber was so calm about it that she didn’t think much of it. Barber later denied that woman’s claims.

At this point, Barber “went on the run,” although where he went and how he traveled is unclear, although Barber later stated that the knife he used to stab Wyatt was disposed of somewhere in Atlanta (about 85 miles away from Carnesville.)

Meanwhile, Wyatt’s wife had reported her husband was missing to authorities in Madison County. It was three days after Wyatt had died that Franklin County (Carnesville) Sheriff Hugh Roach “got a tip” and tracked down Barber. Barber was cooperative, admitted to stabbing Wyatt but stated that it was in self-defense, and told authorities where to find Wyatt’s body.

Based on the condition of Wyatt’s body and Barber’s own statements, the police, the district attorney’s office, and the medical examiner did not believe Barber’s claim of self-defense. Barber was arrested and charged with Malice Murder, Felony Murder, Armed Robbery, Aggravated Assault, and Theft by Taking Motor Vehicle.

The trial was surprisingly swift, the entire process including the jury deliberation taking just two days.
The jury rejected Malice, decreasing that charge to Voluntary Manslaughter, but voted Barber guilty of that and all of the other four charges. Barber was sentenced to life in prison plus forty years.

ADDITIONAL RELEVANT: Gerald “Doug” Wyatt was well known to local authorities and the courts and at least some neighbors in his small town as a sexual predator with a particular interest in teenage males and a scammer of elderly women.

There were five men willing to testify on behalf of Barber about their own experiences with Wyatt, all with stories very similar to Barber’s claimed experience. Only two were allowed to testify.

Wyatt was a hairdresser, used car salesman, and Deacon at a local First Baptist Church. A woman actually quit that church because she objected to Wyatt being a Deacon as Wyatt had taken advantage of her elderly friend, convincing her to sign over her house and financial accounts to him. Wyatt was charged with fraud and eventually ordered to return all funds to that elderly woman.

Wyatt’s neighbors also told 48 Hours that they felt there was “something strange” going on with Wyatt and their 12 year old son. They confronted Wyatt and secretly recorded the conversation that included Wyatt admitting to “having an affair” with the 12 year old and promising that it would end. That resulted in a court hearing where Wyatt accepted a plea deal of 20 years of probation, counseling, and leaving the town. But Wyatt did not leave town, and his behavior escalated.

One week before that court case sentencing, a teenage male claimed attempted molesting against Wyatt. Eight months later, Wyatt was charged again, that time with Aggravated Sodomy as police say Wyatt used a gun to threaten the victim. And then, while awaiting trial in that case, Wyatt went to the Petro Truck Stop and approached Ferrol Sterling Barber.

Ferrol Sterling Barber was also well known to local authorities. At the time of Wyatt’s death, Barber was 17 years old, and thus much of law enforcement’s previous experience with him had been with Barber as a juvenile and any public records or their ability to comment is very limited. However, Sheriff Hugh Roach was surprisingly blunt about his opinion about Barber’s encounter with Wyatt: “No doubt in my mind that he’s a murderer.” Roach also revealed a few prior encounters with Barber: shooting a kid with a BB gun, beating up his older brother, running away from home.

Barber had also, at six years old, been placed in foster care because his mother had hit him. It was after Barber’s conviction and sentencing that Barber told 48 Hours that during that foster care placement, he had been molested and sodomized. Barber had not told his original defense attorney about that, and there is no police nor other record of that.

CONVICTION OVERTURNED, NEW TRIAL: Barber’s conviction was challenged by a pro-bono attorney who felt that the trial had not been fair. The presiding judge at Barber’s trial had also presided at two court cases against Wyatt, and yet had refused to allow a number of potential witnesses and information which could have been beneficial to Barber. The challenge made it to the Supreme Court of Georgia and they set aside Barber’s convictions, all counts. However, Barber remained in jail under a $100K+ bail which neither he nor his family could afford, and the required new trial did not even get on the docket for almost two years. After a media report about the conviction reversal, many anonymous folks reached out to Barber’s mother, and it was apparently two sympathetic women who ended up posting upwards of $175K bond to allow Barber to be released.

At that time, Barber had been incarcerated for over three years. Barber’s new attorneys were hopeful but uncertain that all the potential witnesses and information not allowed at the first trial would be allowed, but also were concerned about how to explain to a jury Barber’s behavior after Wyatt’s death. At the advice of his new attorneys, Barber accepted a plea deal of pleading guilty to voluntary manslaughter, with a sentence of five years plus twelve years probation. With time served, it was an additional 21 months and Barber was released from prison in July 2000.

OTHERS AND PUBLIC REACTION: At the time of the 48 Hours episode, Wyatt’s wife, Patricia “Pat,” was adamantly defensive of her husband and wanting the public’s and police and legal focus to veer away from Wyatt’s past and to focus on how he died which she felt was a murder. She and her adult children expressed outrage that Barber’s conviction was overturned. She made statements that many felt were perhaps delusional or at best boiled down to semantics: her husband had “issues” but was not a “child molester,” (if someone is post-pubescent, are they a child?,) and he never “would force himself on someone.” (despite statements from at least five alleged victims, and at least two of them alleging use of a weapon, to the contrary.)

Judy Barber, Barber’s mother, was portrayed as an adamant defender of her son, but many noted that it was, perhaps, her advice to not contact police and seek an attorney first, and for her son to ditch Wyatt’s car, that did not serve Barber well. Also the reveal that Barber, at 6 years old, ended up in the foster system because she hit him, and where Barber states he was molested and sodomized, has raised ire.

WHERE ARE THEY NOW (2021): Barber was released from prison in July 2000, lived with his mother and worked with his step-father doing construction work, and then moved to Alabama, and eventually to Missouri. He has had an extensive and continued criminal record. Website archives suggest that he had a girlfriend and two children, but that can not be confirmed.

This YOUNG man’s life was doomed from the moment he encountered his 2nd child molester and convicted rapist @ only 17 !

Obviously after being horribly mistreated by the justice system and officers of the court’s he was wrongfully convicted in – he turned to drugs and alcohol to COPE with the violent loss of most of his childhood. Being sodomized at age 6 was the beginning of this awful tragedy & the death of all the promise this young man’s life once held. The demise of his future – began the night he climbed into the car of the man he eventually killed – claiming that man was trying to rape him and he just reacted.

Sterling was left to languish almost 4 years in prison waiting for his appeal to prevail – and I believe it was THOSE CRITICAL YEARS that took away his innocence and his hope for any normal future. This young man was doomed without extensive therapy and constant guidance upon his release at almost 21. He dove into Pot and alcohol to COPE with all the traumatic events of his stolen youth. He WAS DOOMED FROM THE GET GO. Some people never come back from the trauma’s of a tragic life beginning with sexual and physical abuse. I feel nothing but empathy for his wasted life. He wasn’t strong enough to overcome the TRAGEDY’S OF HIS YOUTH.

His Mother once said as her then 19 yr old son was waiting appeal in prison; “Sterling is coming home. He will marry a lovely women, go to college and have lovely children.” NONE of those dreams for her son ever came true. This is nothing but an American tragedy. The tragic story of a life lost. COMPLETELY LOST

grandmother's house in West Allis, Wisconsin. That August, he logged an

with orders for counseling.

On September 15, 1987, Steven Tuomi vanished in Milwaukee, the mystery
unsolved until Dahmer confessed his murder in 1991. James Doxator was the

a church, but as we crossed a vacant lot, Marcelo suddenly turned on Ivan
and started strangling him. I was so paralyzed by fear I could not run away.
I watched in horror, tears streaming down my cheeks, as he killed and then
raped my brother. When he was finished with Ivan, he turned to me, hugged
me, and said he loved me." Then he asked Altair to live with him. Scared to
death, the boy agreed to spend the night with Marcelo in the bushes.

The next morning, the lovestruck killer took Altair to work with him. When
they arrived the office was closed. The terrified youngster was able to
escape. He hitchhiked his way back home and told his mother that he had got
lost of his brother. A few days later, pressed by his sister, the boy told
the truth. In the meantime Marcelo, A truly considerate killer, had returned
to the crime scene to tuck the hands of his victim inside his shorts, "so
that the rats couldn't gnaw the fingers."

When young Ivan's family went to the police, Marcelo, who had maintained his
daily routine, was calmly arrested in the Rio shop where he worked. "I
thought you would come yesterday," he told the arresting officers. At first,
police thought Ivan's murder was an isolated case. However, two months later
Marcelo's dotting mother was called to testify about her son's strange
behavior. One night, she said, he left home with a machete "to cut bananas."
Apparently he returned the next morning with no bananas. Eventually Marcelo
did confess to 14 killings and led police to the remains of his other
victims. As Brazil's star killer, he asked police if anywhere in the world
there was a case like his, and stated he killed because: "I liked the boys
and I didn't want them to go to hell."


Johannes Mashiane

Known as "The Beast of Atteridgeville", this South African, slayer sodomized
and killed 12 boys by either strangling or stoning them. In October 1989 the
