PAULA POUNDSTONE'S DAUGHTER LIED ABOUT CHILD ABUSE
. . . pals claim
PAULA POUNDSTONE'S friends have rushed to her defense and
they say she never laid a finger on the daughter who accused
her of abuse — the 12-year-old girl made up the charges as
revenge for a vicious argument with her falling-down-drunk
mother.
Paula's friends insist that's the untold story behind the
comedienne's headline-making arrest on felony charges of
"lewd conduct" and child endangerment. But the L.A. County
D.A.'s office charges that she committed lewd acts against
the daughter on three separate occasions, and that she also
endangered her other children.
Paula, 41 — who has three adopted children and two foster
children — checked into the Promises rehab center in Malibu
in June to try to beat her addiction to alcohol. But she
managed to smuggle in booze and get drunk several times at
the center, a friend revealed.
"It was during one of those rehab benders that Paula got
into a screaming match with her daughter over the phone.
"Paula's daughter was telling her mom she was going out with
some of her friends later that evening. Paula flew into a
drunken rage and ranted to her daughter that she was way too
young to be going out unsupervised.
"Shortly after the blow-up with her daughter, the 'lewd
conduct' charges were filed against Paula.
"I believe her daughter made up the charges with no basis at
all for the terrible accusations."
A source close to Paula contended:
"Paula's daughter blew the whistle on the comedienne not for
molesting her, but because Paula was out of control on
booze.
"The daughter brought charges against Paula, forcing her to
expose her drinking problems to the world."
Shortly before her June 27 arrest at the rehab center, a
deeply depressed Paula got smashed on another bender and
suffered painful burns on her hand in the facility's
kitchen, said her friend.
"Paula was so drunk she somehow managed to put her hand in a
pot of hot grease while stumbling around the kitchen. She
was rushed to UCLA Medical Center to be treated for the
burn.
"And while at the medical center she was also given a
psychiatric evaluation. Doctors were concerned she might
harm herself.
"It's a deadly combination to be depressed and completely
plastered."
Paula already tried to commit suicide eight years ago,
recalls an insider who went with a friend to Paula's West
Hollywood condo.
"When we opened the door, we saw Paula lying there on her
living room floor, passed out. We tried to rouse her, but
couldn't. She was totally unconscious.
"We called the ambulance and it took her to Cedars-Sinai
hospital.
"Later I was told she had attempted suicide by taking an
overdose of prescription drugs."
The close source added: "I have no doubt the child
molestation charges against Paula will be dropped. Her
problem is drinking, not sexually abusing kids."

The spin begins! Don't you think the cops took into consideration that the
girl lied,before bringing charges?
Not necessarily. There is often pressure to act quickly and decisively if it
is believed that children are in danger. For example, there was a national
manhunt for the alleged highjacker of Susan Smith's car before it was revealed
that she was lying. Not recent example of men falsely imprisoned for rape
because a witness lied or, in some cases, failed to admit their memory failed
them. That's also a popular tact in bitter divorce cases--one ex accuses the
other of "endangering the children" and the authorities put all sorts of
restrictions on visitation etc. for the accused parent, often on very flimsy
evidence.
It is a very touchy situation when the safety of children and the presumption
of innocence come into conflict. Often, the authorities are damned if they do
and damned if they don't. If they do intervene aggressively, and it turns out
the accused is innocent, they're painted as jackbooted thugs. If they don't
intervene and a child is harmed, they are painted as uncaring and incompetent
bumblers.
I'm glad I've never had to make that kind of a call.

Even without the sexual charges, this is a case where states
often come in and take natural children from their mother.
What's up with the rehab that doesn't stop her from getting
so drunk she burns herself to the extent she needs
emergency treatment? She's reported to have been drunk
in there more than once, took her own booze in, and had
attempted suicide only eight years ago. If this is the spin
from her "pals"... what the hell could they be covering???
h-
That and a suicide attempt?? Makes me wonder what kind of
screening is done for adoption and fostering?
And how do you sneak alcohol into a rehab, I've heard they
search everything and even take away the Listerine?
desi
Only my opinion, of course.
:) BTW... I can see the group again!!!! YEAH!!!!
I get the felling from the article (it's hard to tell with The
Enquirer's elision) that the suicide attempt wasn't necessarily
official, but more the summation of Poundstone's friends.
Unless these friends passed on the info to the social services,
the foster care agency might not have known about it.

Careful, it isn't clear if the suicide attempt was a conclusion
made by the authorities or Poundstone's friends.
I'm not willing to believe, at this point, that CPS would place a
child in a home that they KNEW was run by an alcoholic or a
depressive.

also, there was an investigation lasting about 3 weeks before Paula was
charged. the da would want more than mere testimony of a 12 yr old girl with
a grudge. if that was all they wanted, why wait at all?

The foster care system is desperate for foster
families, and will take pretty much anyone who
steps forward. Stories are not hard to come by of
children who are abused in foster care, where the
standards are not as stringent as long as the
money keeps coming in to the State.
Oh, btw, David's father also drove a school bus...

Celebrities, the rich & famous are always innocent. I am sure the kid
does not have a publicist, PR adviser, agent and others to clean up
the kids mess. Whoever has the most money in the dispute is always
innocent.
