Mary Slover to appeal custody of Kolten Slover to Illinois Supreme
Court

By The H&R Staff

SPRINGFIELD - Mary Slover will ask the Illinois Supreme Court to hear
her appeal of a court ruling stripping her of custody of the son of
murder victim Karyn Hearn Slover.

Kolten Slover, 11, is Karyn Slover's son with Michael Slover Jr. His
father and paternal grandparents, Michael Slover Sr. and Jeannette
Slover, were convicted in 2002 of murdering his mother. Prior to their
indictment, he had been adopted by Mary Slover, his paternal aunt.

Her parental rights were terminated after Macon County Associate Judge
Scott B. Diamond found her to be an unfit parent because she aided in
the concealment of Karyn Slover's death. The 4th District Appellate
Court upheld that ruling last month.

Mary Slover denies any involvement in the death or its concealment and
has never been criminally charged.

Her attorney, Dan Davlantis of Springfield, said Wednesday that he
will soon file a petition asking the Supreme Court to review the
appellate court's decision. It is up to the Supreme Court to decide
whether it wants to hear the case.

Kolten Slover is now in the guardianship of his maternal grandparents,
Larry and Donna Hearn of Mount Zion.

I hope she wins, and I think she will.

Kind regards,
Nancy

I don't know anything more about this case than what's printed above, so I am
curious why you think the murdering father's sister should be able to keep the
child as opposed to the maternal grandparents. Are they somehow unfit? If
there's any chance this woman concealed something, she's complicit and I would
hate to see her get custody. As usual, I am sure there is more to it than just
this article, so please enlighten me.

Thanks.

I'm with Nancy, at least with the first half. Mary Slover had adopted
Kolten, & he lived with her for about half his life. He calls her
Mom. If this is to be overset, there should be some actual evidence
that she was complicit in Karen Slover's death or the coverup.

(For that matter, I'd like to see more evidence that the Slovers are
guilty--I wasn't convinced by the prosecution.)

I'm pessimistic about Mary Slover's chances, though.

Kolten Slover was legally adopted by Mary Slover. He lived
with her and there is absolutely no evidence that Mary had
any knowledge of or participation in Karen Hearn Slover's
murder or attempt to conceal it. The original ruling
stated that she is an unfit mother because she must have
known about the murder. The custody battle is just
getting an innocent kid caught in the middle of two
hostile families.

She never legally adopted him and he can't have "lived with her half his life,"
since he lived with his mother and his grandmother, (who murdered his mother).
The very fact that she refuses to acknowledge her relatives guilt is enough of a reason to not let her keep him. She is going to drag him to jail to visit the murdering freaks that stole his mother from him.
I know this has been many years ago and he's grown now, but I can't believe anyone thinks a relative of these people should have raised this kid.
You're sick.
