Boy, 13, quizzed over toddler's murder

A BOY, 13, was last night being questioned by police
at the scene of a stabbing murder after a
three-year-old girl was found dumped in a vacant
block near her home.

The body of Courtney Morley-Clarke was discovered
by police in long grass just 300m from her home in
Point Clare, north of Sydney, shortly before 10am
(Queensland time) yesterday.

Last night a teenager, flanked by detectives, was
taken to the Morley-Clarke house and walked slowly
along the street towards where the little girl's body
was found.

Courtney was last seen alive by her parents Tamara
and Lawrence Morley-Clarke at midnight when she
was asleep in her bed. When the family woke about
6am, Courtney was missing.

Her disappearance sparked an intense search by police
and SES personnel.

But the search later shifted to an investigation into
the whereabouts of a Gosford
teenager after a blood-stained rock was discovered.

After the boy was found and interviewed, police also
found Courtney's body at
9.47am. A knife, believed to be the murder weapon, also
was seized, the sources
said.

The boy was still being questioned last night.

Little is known about the teenager except that he has
lived in the area with his
family for some time.

Police also were believed to be investigating a possible
link between the killing and
the sexual assault of a small child on the state's
mid-north coast about a week ago.

Courtney's parents told police the toddler had wandered
from their home once
before.

The blonde-haired, blue-eyed girl was clothed only in
her nappy when found. Her
nightdress was nearby.

Detectives have refused to release details about the
cause of death awaiting the
results of a post-mortem examination in Sydney today.

They also have refused to comment on reports Courtney
was stabbed to death.

Police said Courtney's family and other residents in the
street were extremely
distressed.

Courtney's brother Justin, 13, knocked on neighbours'
doors in the quiet cul-de-sac
shortly after 7am frantically searching for his sister.

"He asked me could I have a look around my yard," a
neighbour said.

"He said 'My little sister has gone missing'. He seemed
quite upset.

"A bit later I saw the mother standing in the driveway
and she looked very anxious."

The Morley-Clarke family have lived in the street for at
least 10 years. They have
two sons Nathan, 15, and Justin.

The teenage boy has been described by locals as a loner
who was shunned by his
peers and was "always hanging out with younger kids".
