Daughter lay in bed as lover hacked father to death

July 22 2002
As her father was brutally chopped and stabbed to death in his sleep by her
lover, Belinda Jean Van Krevel lay silent in the next bedroom with her
two-year-old daughter, a court heard today after she pleaded not guilty to
being involved in the murder.

Van Krevel and her daughter were woken during the early hours by the sound
of Keith Schreiber repeatedly striking Jack Van Krevel about the head and
neck with a tomahawk.

They heard Mr Van Krevel moaning and groaning as he was murdered and the
daughter asked: "What's happening, what's happening, Poppy, Poppy."
Schreiber then came to their bedroom, left a bloody handprint on the door
and told Van Krevel that her father was dead.

Van Krevel, 22, is now accused of being involved in her father's gruesome
death and today pleaded not guilty in the NSW Supreme Court to murdering him
at his Albion Park home, on the NSW south coast on or about August 18, 2000.

She has also pleaded not guilty in the alternative to soliciting Schreiber
to kill her 48-year-old father.

Schreiber was the sole person who struck Mr Van Krevel 25 times with a
tomahawk and stabbed him 16 times with a knife. He has pleaded guilty to
murdering Mr Van Krevel and been dealt with by the courts.

Prosecutor Terry Thorpe told the jury of eight women and four men in his
opening address today Van Krevel was accused of organising the murder of her
father and had assisted and encouraged Schreiber to carry out the killing.

"The murder was motivated firstly by the hatred the accused had for her
father and secondly it was based on the fact that she knew should he die,
she would receive a substantial amount of money," he said.

The jury was told Van Krevel came from a dysfunctional family and that her
brother, Mark Valera, is serving two life sentences for the murders of
Wollongong men Frank Arkell and David O'Hearn.

Mr Thorpe said that during Valera's trial proceedings allegations were
raised that Mr Van Krevel had physically and sexually abused his son, and
then later that he had also abused his daughter.

He said that when Schreiber was arrested and confessed to killing Mr Van
Krevel, Schreiber told police he did it because of what Mr Van Krevel had
done to Valera, who was his friend.

But Mr Thorpe told the jury they would hear that Belinda Jean Van Krevel
offered Schreiber $2,000 to kill her father and that she had spent several
hours with him the day before the murder.

It was also alleged that Van Krevel left a window open for Schreiber to get
into her father's house and also left a tomahawk, knife and torch for him to
use.
After her father was killed, Mr Thorpe said Van Krevel made her daughter a
drink and put on a video for her to watch and then took Schreiber into the
kitchen and gave him a drink.

Later Van Krevel went to a police station breathing erratically and
appearing like she had been crying saying that someone had been in her house
and that there was blood in the hallway, Mr Thorpe said.

Van Krevel's barrister, John Stratton, told the jury that Schreiber was a
very disturbed man and had plenty of his own reasons for murdering Mr Van
Krevel.

The trial, which is expected to go for four weeks and hear from almost 50
witnesses, is continuing.
