Woman charged in death of friend
Palatine police say business partners argued over money

By Brendan McCarthy
Tribune staff reporter
Published August 15, 2005

Palatine schoolteacher Cindy Wolosick was savoring the last day of a
weeklong vacation in Mexico on Thursday with three close friends.

On Friday morning, Wolosick was dead.

Late Saturday night police charged Wolosick's close friend and
business partner Diana Thames with first-degree murder and outlined
what they said was a case of friendship, bad business dealings and
deceit.

The facts, said Palatine Police Cmdr. Michael Seebacher, are as
follows: Thames, 47, of Bloomington was an overnight guest at
Wolosick's home Thursday night. Thames told Wolosick she did not want
to drive home in bad weather.

About 5 a.m. Friday, Thames called 911, telling police she found
Wolosick dead in her bed. Police later found Wolosick with several
stab wounds in her chest and neck.

Investigators found what they say is the murder weapon--a bloody
knife--and more than 100 pieces of evidence in Wolosick's house in the
1300 block of East Evergreen Drive.

On Friday night, Thames voluntarily went to police and answered
questions. She gave them a videotaped confession Saturday, police
said.

Thames, the bookkeeper for their real estate business, told police
Wolosick had questioned her about "unexplained shortages and missing
company funds," Seebacher said.

The two quarreled. Thames told police she "grabbed a knife from the
kitchen," he said.

Their business, a limited liability company called Thames and
Wolosick, was not in good standing, according to records filed with
the Illinois secretary of state's office. It was Thames' main source
of employment, police said.

Wolosick's death stunned neighbors, who described the area as quiet
and safe. Wolosick, 46, was a speech and language pathologist at Lake
Louise Elementary School. She had worked in Palatine School District
15 for 21 years.

"Cindy would do anything for anybody, she had a huge heart," said Jill
Flynn, Wolosick's cousin. "Everyone is asking why. What could have
caused this?"

Wolosick had just returned from vacation with Thames and two other
female friends. Flynn said she received an e-mail from Thames early
Thursday, saying the group was having a great time and was about to
leave for the airport.

Wolosick met Thames 25 years ago while studying at Illinois State
University, Flynn said. Wolosick was working at a day-care center
where Thames, a mother of three, sent her daughter.

The two became friends, Flynn said. They started their business three
years ago.

Thames has been in custody since Friday night.

Sounds a bit *passionate* for a business argument, doesn't it?

yes, I called it, not that it gives me any pleasure...I had thoughts that
their relationship was more "personal" than the article indicated, but was
way too polite to mention it...

They're "flipping" houses. Ever done home renovation? Oy. Add in
money problems and there doesn't have to be an ounce of romantic
complication involved. Not saying there wasn't any, be it one-way
unrequited or two-way, just sayin'.

As a matter of fact, we are in the process of renovating our kitchen right
now. ;) Did the master bath last year. It turned out beautiful. Built
an oversize shower, marble and ceramic, with a travertine floor. Right now
we took out a wall separating the dining area from the living room and are
in the process of stripping the cabinets. But I was thinking more the
manner of the murder, stabbing.

Despite their age, they seem Bo-worthy.

I wonder who had the start up capital?

Good question. Any bets on whether this is the very same Diana Thames
below?

http://www.obre.state.il.us/REALEST/REDISP/REDIS98.HTM
Normal:
Diana Thames - 12/16/98 - Real Estate Broker license was terminated
for failing to rectify a dishonored remittance to the Office of Banks
and Real Estate.

The following year (1999) she was reinstated:

reinstated subject to a reprimand and a $300 fine for rectifying a

Found the answer. According to a friend of Diana's, they took out
joint bank loans, and Diana did a lot of the physical labor on the
rehab:

Realtor charged with murder

Associated Press with Pantagraph reports
PALATINE -- A Twin City real-estate agent was in custody Sunday after
being charged with fatally stabbing an elementary school speech
therapist in this suburb northwest of Chicago.

The Cook County state's attorney's office charged 47-year-old Diana
Thames of Bloomington late Saturday with first-degree murder in the
death of Cindy Wolosick, 46, her longtime friend and partner in a
real-estate rehabbing business, Palatine police said.

Thames and Wolosick bought run-down houses on Bloomington's west side,
fixed up the properties and sold them at a profit, according to Pat
Cosenza, owner of Realty Professionals, a separate local real-estate
agency Thames has worked for during the last 10 years.

Thames had called 911 and originally told police she discovered
Wolosick's body Friday morning while staying overnight as a guest at
Wolosick's condominium. The victim had been stabbed multiple times in
the neck and chest.

There was no sign of forced entry at the condominium, Palatine Police
Cmdr. Mike Seebacher said. A knife was recovered at the scene. Police
said the suspected murder weapon probably came from within the home.

Thames made a videotaped confession after being confronted with
inconsistencies in her original statements to police and physical
evidence in the case, police said.

"Thames said that she and Wolosick had a verbal argument just prior to
the murder over the financial debt of their joint business," police
said in a statement. "Thames said she then attacked Wolosick with a
knife taken from the kitchen."

Cosenza, who said she never met Wolosick, on Sunday said she did not
believe the charges prosecutors had brought against her longtime
associate.

"If you know Diana, you could never picture her picking up a knife and
hurting somebody," Cosenza said. "She's not like that. She's the
nicest person you'll ever meet. "I'm just in shock. I don't believe
she could have done something like that.

Cosenza said the two women had been in business together for at least
four years. She said she did not know how many properties the two had
rehabbed, but said the pair had taken out bank loans together to fix
up several properties on Bloomington's west side.

Thames was successful at the rehabbing business because she was not
only savvy about real-estate markets, but could also do most of the
renovation work on her own, Cosenza said.

"Diana would work hard on these properties," Cosenza said. "She'd
clean them up. She did the carpentry work. She did her own painting.
She did a lot of things. A lot of her labor went into these
properties."

People who often could not afford to buy a house also received help
from Thames at fixing up and purchasing these older homes, Cosenza
said, adding Thames helped many in Bloomington fulfill their dreams of
owning a home.

Cosenza said she was unaware that Thames and Wolosick were in
financial debt. But the two usually did not include her in their
enterprise, she said.

Thames was scheduled to appear Monday in Rolling Meadows Court for a
bond hearing. A telephone listing for a Diana Thames in Bloomington
has been disconnected.

Wolosick worked at Palatine School District 15's Lake Louise School.
The district has activated a crisis-response team to help Wolosick's
co-workers deal with her death.

This doesn't sound like a big deal, or maybe it is. Anyone know?
